Look at all the people waiting for you and Sage to drop a video! You and your partner are appreciated and respected in the pheasant hunting community Lucas. Well done and keep em coming. Sage forget how to hunt...Ya RIGHT!
Thank you! It is fun to see everyone's excitement over the start of pheasant hunting this fall. Brent and I like to joke that our dogs might forget what they are doing over the winter/summer, lol!!
Thanks for all the great videos and information. I’m headed your way the first week of December. How about a hunt with a subscriber? I have a nine year old lab out of two South Dakota guide dogs.
I'm glad to see you out again. I went opening day and missed the only bird that I got to flie. And to add on to my comment I would like to point out that you got me into pheasant hunting
Thanks! Sometimes it goes that way. I was fortunate to have that last bird fly right in front of me or Sage and I would've gone home skunked. I thank you for sharing that information about getting into the sport. I'm humbled.
Thanks a bunch for posting this video! This makes the 791 mile trip to SD a little more tolerable. Just knowing what awaits when we hit the ground! I am amazed at how well the pheasants did considering the brutal winter! Nothing like bagging that first rooster out on the plains for SD! Born and raised in SD....currently an exile in Indiana!!
Great video, Lookiss. The video from OUR opening day should be uploaded today or tomorrow, & you'll be able to see for yourself whether Ace & I found any pheasants. 😉 Even if we didn't, it was fantastic to be out there actually after them. Pictures, videos, & discussion are great ways to pass the off-season, but they pale in comparison to the real thing. Our best to you & Sage, the roody machine!
Good Stuff LU! Glad to have JCW back to get me through the Fall/Winter. Great job Sage! I watched the whole way through and didn't skip the ads! Keep the videos coming.
I look forward to your videos all year round. I'm mostly a waterfowl guy, but last weekend while walking up to our spot, we jumped a pheasant and dumped him. Now I'm ready for pheasant and taking a break from waterfowl lol.
Thanks! I hunt ducks/geese pretty religiously in the fall, but the excitement of pheasant hunting just can't be beat, IMO. Best wishes on a safe, successful season.
I enjoy your videos immensely! I hunt just across the border... here are a couple thoughts; 1) last winter was brutal, yet when we were driving back and forth to ice fish Big Stone there were pheasants everywhere. They seemed to survive the winter well enough and nesting conditions were excellent. So far, I am seeing more birds than last year so here's to a great season! 2) I have concluded the difference in waterfowl, deer, and pheasant hunting comes down adrenaline. With waterfowl you get a little shot of adrenaline every time ducks fly within range. With deer hunting you get a little shot of adrenaline whenever you see (or hear) deer and a big jolt when you know you want to shoot. But with pheasant hunting, there is a continuous light rush that starts as soon as you hit the field and never subsides. When the dog gets birdy, that adrenaline flow escalates and a big jolt comes on the flush. I swear pheasant hunting is an addiction to adrenaline.
Thank you! You hit the nail on the head. On the resident opener, I was quickly reminded when Sage got birdy what that adrenaline rush actually feels like. Something that cannot be duplicated! Best wishes on a safe and successful season!
Alright! Glad to see you back at it. Sage looks primed and ready. Love the excitement you get to see from the dogs knowing they are finally going to hunt. Just got back myself this morning. Only jumped one and too far for a shot. Great way to start it off knocking down those two. Making first trip out last couple days of October into early November. Hopefully the weather cooperates this season and won’t have to cancel my trips. Thx for uploading.
Great to see you back! Have still been shooting clays through the offseason, youth season starts here in Iowa next weekend so I will be going out both days.
Great Outro, and that last bird is what makes South Dakota truly special. Very few times have I been driving from a spot and passed a piece of public land, to see a rooster land 100 yards from the road and just be able to pull over and give it a go. Hope you and Sage have a great year, and maybe our paths will cross this year! (Flushedup)
You should do a how-to video for novice hunters. I feel like if you don't have a group that can teach you, there are not a lot of resources available to the novice hunter. There are tons of action videos. I went to SD last year for the first time and got my butt kicked (3 birds in 4 days). I'm headed over there again in 3 weeks to try again.
That is a good suggestion. I'll try to put something together, or at least explain what I'm doing a little bit more. The best advice I can give is follow your dog, work edges/transition habitat, i.e., where cattails turn into lighter grass, where crops bump up against grass, low lying areas with thicker vegetation, etc. Fields that have had the corn harvested right next to public land is typically ideal. If you're not finding birds in a certain area, pack up and drive 25-30 miles or so and try some different spots. Right now, with so much vegetation and crops still in the fields, pheasants are often not going on to public land until later in the day. I usually don't head out to go hunting until 3pm or so, focusing on catching pheasants as they come back to public land to roost for the evening. Anyway, I'll see what I can do!
I recently found you and like your approach to pheasant hunting and making these videos. I know you use a 12 gauge and you start the season with #5 shot switching to #4 later in season. I was just wondering if you talk at all about what choke you use? I wasn't looking for brand name just whether you start season with improved or modified and whether you switch later in the year. If you go thru this in an earlier video just let me know which one. Also wondering if you plan on getting a pup or already have one. Thanks for the vids.
Hey David, thanks for the kind words. I used to shoot a Patternmaster Code Black Duck, Full, but a couple years ago switched to a Carlson Cremator Mid Range. I've been very happy with this choke. I am planning to get a puppy in the near future. Planning on this spring if the right one comes along.
No, I have a Gen 3 ShotKam. It is in bird mode and I do have to wake it up with a quick bump. Typically, I do that when I see Sage getting birdy. Thanks for watching!
@@lilbrowhydaw Yes, if you listen you can hear me bumping the gun with some regularity when Sage is birdy. The only times I fail to get it operational is when I'm genuinely surprised by a flush or if the cold has killed the battery.
@@lilbrowhydaw Not sure. Watch all my feermz and count which ones don't have the ShotKlam and then we'll know. I'd guess I fail to capture 15% of the shots.
