Great to see Tom talking about his work! Deserves all attention - his modulars are amazing. I've been using them as my main system since 2010, and will probably never part with it (and yes, it's still growing, although much slower now). Also very interesting to hear Tom talk about the phaser design. I have some of the early phaser prototypes, and I love them. They are a little bit more unruly, and you may need to search for the sweetspot, and in the final versions I guess he zoomed in on the sweetspots, which is exactly as it should be. Those phasers played a key role in my Modulisme session (#88), which was largely recorded on a 3-frame Bugbrand (sorry Tom, sometimes 2 frames are not enough ;) )
Yes! Great to hear from Tom. I encourage everyone to explore what Bugband has to offer. Quality format with great sound, iconic look, and beautifully put together with smart features included. About to expand my system this coming year!
What Tom doesn’t mention is that the components used are all super high quality, banana sockets and pots still working well after years of use. I have one of the first voices and combine with the Pheonal and Tom’s red modules, simple with endless sonic noodling.
They're not OTT quality (& price) but equally not cheap (a short sighted approach) ---- a fine balance ;) But, yeah, thanks and it's always good to hear that my builds have been reliable!
Gorgeous system. I really like the aesthetic and Tom’s appreciation for instruments having limitations. Sweet editing/flow of the conversation - interesting, detailed, on point. Nice work, Ben!
really great video - As someone who just got my first bits of Bugbrand at the back end of last year I find Tom's philosophy about his instruments really inspiring & so it's no surprise they're equally inspiring to work with. I need to double up my single frame Synthvoice I think soon with some voltage generation / sequencing etc. so I don't need to hook up additional non-Bugs gear...
Always great to see Tom and banana modulars getting more attention. The paia frame with the first modules was the icing on the cake for the last recording session for The Chasms' first album back in December 2008. Modules still going strong and all the old modules work flawlessly with all the new modules. The effects loop on both of my phasor modules gets a lot of use.
hail the banana! What do you tend to put in the phaser FX loops? I've been using overdrives in an auto wah FX loop for a while (EHX Q Tron + that I've had for a long time) that's fun.
@@DivKid Just about anything in the bug system, usually involving a matrix mixer with some vca's at their inputs so what's in the phase feedback path is changing, also out to pedals and back in. It depends on how crazy a sound I'm looking for.
Big fan of the limited-size case practice. I have enough modules now to fill a (small) wall, but I continue to use my two cases - 208hp and 168hp. It's good to impose limitations on yourself, as you guys mentioned, and it also allows me to build and rebuild cases with a slightly new guiding idea in mind every several months, and I love that planning / conception phase almost as much as I enjoy making noises. It makes for a satisfying loop.
I really like that approach, either smaller sections of larger systems or smaller cases among a larger set up. Having options to make varying instruments but then having the limitations once that's set up.
Ben, please do more Bugbrand videos! That phasor sounds wonderful, as far as one could tell from the short snippets. Also those shift registers seems very interesting to me...
I'd love to but I don't have any. Just the PTDelay which I made a video of some time ago, I sometimes feel like making another one as I use that delay a lot.
@ I’m confident, you would get some modules from him for review, or did he show no interest? There was a rather big Bugbrand modular at Superbooth 24 at the Tauron Lab Tonarium outdoor tent from Poland. Did you see it? The guys with this huge audio matrix ,mixer for immersive installations. They had a lot of R*S Serge, too.
I like those power starve circuits too, first experience of that was with an overdrive pedal with a power sag control. Or rather without me knowing what it was at the time dying battery in FX pedals.
Really enjoyed this. I have one rack of BugBrand, circa 2012. In that era the jacks were below the knobs. What was that Tom said about getting around to doing a frequency shifter? He must mean in the new blue format. I have his 2012 version. SYN2B and SYN2BX were a quadrature sine VCO and a frequency shifter driven by two of its phases.
Not sure if Tom meant a red series frequency shifter, specifically for the PTDelay feedback send/return path. I didn't know any sort of frequency shifted existed in the format, I certainly didn't know what BugBrand was in 2012 but nice to learn
Around minute 29 he mentions a frequency shifter in a feedback path. Bode Frequency Shifter with Chronoblob 2 in external delay feedback mode is respectfully intense.
Been thinking about switching from euro to Bug and this just might have pushed me over the edge. Maybe I been playing with my double knots too long but the banana jack feel is definitely a thing .
I've definitely had a lot of people using Serge & Bug together and definitely some with Buchla too - though less sure if they're passing voltages. I'd imagine that 100/200 series are good, but I think the 'clever' 200e might require more care. Have a search for Phisynth and Batchas (here on youtube) for some good examples.
Awh, thanks Ben! Always a fun chat!
thanks for the chance to come down and do it
Always a joy to hear from Tom. I have huge admiration for his approach and his productions (and he's s super nice guy too!).
Absolutely!

Thanks for sharing. I'm happy to see Tom.
Happy to be able to see him, make a video and share it. Thanks!

Superb and unique sound in a crowded market and Tom is wonderful to work with.
glad to hear it, nothing but positive stories.

I've known people that have had them for years as you say, still going strong!
Gorgeous system. I really like the aesthetic and Tom’s appreciation for instruments having limitations.
Sweet editing/flow of the conversation - interesting, detailed, on point. Nice work, Ben!
Thanks Jon, appreciate that.
Always good seeing BugBrand getting some exposure 👍
Yeah nice to share and get more people to be aware of it.

I can see living just in that ecosystem and also having a nice external central sequencer working well.
great job Ben and Tom!
a pleasure, thanks!
Great to see Tom get some much deserved love for his gear and for the man himself. Nice one Ben.
I'm glad I have the chance to go see him again and make another video. Would definitely like to be working with the gear more too.
.....if anyone deserves to be happy in all this.....t's Tom.....he is such genuinely nice person to interact with.....definitely a one off......

Nothing but good things to say about Tom and his wonderful designs!
likewise
absolutely love my Bug system. Tom is a true gent
absolutely
Love Tom's stuff - legend of the game
absolutely
I bought a PT Delay from him back in the early 2000's when I had a Frac-rack system.
I really love the PT Delay, still use that plenty in the studio.

@@DivKid Maybe it's time I got together a 2Frame for loaning.. Would be very interesting seeing what made of it!
the bugbrand stuff just sounds so lush 😍
Indeed it does.
love the stereo bus compressor red one, makes a nice squish on my mixes
Likewise!
One of my best pieces of equipment! Very fond of it.
Iv'e not heard much of the stereo compressor in the flesh but it's been great when I have heard it.
ooh I have a little weevil I bought years ago; this was my first proper machine; I've used it quite a lot. love the starve circuit.
I like those power starve circuits too, first experience of that was with an overdrive pedal with a power sag control. Or rather without me knowing what it was at the time dying battery in FX pedals.
Bugbrand!
Tom and Bug Brand is the best! Check out that module on the left of the desk! That looks very interesting maybe a new touch plate sequencer?
(what was I saying about things taking ...some... time)
haha
Tom Bug is a fucking legend!!! :)
Absolutely, great guy and gear!
Mark 🙌
Big smiles to you!

@@DivKid I have a PRC1 PT Delay blue module too. Same vintage. No send/return in the feedback path, unfortunately. But it sounds great.
Around minute 29 he mentions a frequency shifter in a feedback path. Bode Frequency Shifter with Chronoblob 2 in external delay feedback mode is respectfully intense.
intense indeed as those harmonics get pulled apart :)
Such a genius!
lovely guy and great gear
Been thinking about switching from euro to Bug and this just might have pushed me over the edge. Maybe I been playing with my double knots too long but the banana jack feel is definitely a thing .
oh massively so, patching with bananas is lovely.
love the esthetic, looks a bit like 500 Series.
the spread of controls does have the look about it, certainly in the smaller set ups.
Question: Is it BugBrand are fit to work along Serge or Buchla voltage control??
I've definitely had a lot of people using Serge & Bug together and definitely some with Buchla too - though less sure if they're passing voltages. I'd imagine that 100/200 series are good, but I think the 'clever' 200e might require more care.

BugBrand is like Eurorack and Serge, bipolar wider ranges voltages, unlike Buchla that does no negative voltage and generally 0-10V for the CV.
I'm a late convert, but the Bugs are awesome machines.
Absolutely, always enjoyed when I've had chance to patch with them.
