The oil thing was very rare back then, grease was useful for other things and actually heating it up takes a lot of heat, they would usually just throw hot water and large rocks down the "oil holes"

You can't know for what reason someone is going to enter your house. Laying a trap shows you premeditated injuring or killing someone. If you laid the trap before the threat, it's not self defence. A trap goes off immediately, not on the condition someone is a bad guy.
Because you could accidentally kill someone what if your trap got set off by someone that lived in your home. Welp now they're dead. Or your friend comes over unannounced and they just fucking die
