84 degrees eh, I will have to remember that one. In effect a 10 to 1 gearing for the wheel.
Guards. who needs guards when you have long sleeves and a long beard. What could possible go wrong.

*_I've had 2 wheels explode on my tool post grinder. Thankfully the guard and me not being in the way kept me safe. The noise when the wheels went was L O U D!!!!!_*

while i do run my wheel unguarded at times, i have rules...
never stand in line with it. EVER.
double check speeds. triple check. its more about surface speed anyway. 30M/s seems standard. start em a bit slow, if they wear out, speed em up or get a harder bond wheel.
give them a tap with the hammer...
"clonk" gets thrown on the floor. invariably it will break.
    "clink" gets mounted.
i have never had a wheel break, never want to, and i have seen one or two do so... always operator error. from bench grinders set up on stands made from 4ft length of 2" waterpipe bolted to concrete that howl with harmonics, to breaker bars on nuts to wet wheels to no blotters to wrong washers...
regards kicking compound over... iirc its 5.8 degrees, not that it matters. um... just trig.
do a lot of taper work so its not an option for me as im using the compound...
differential lead nut... bored out the lead nut for as big as i could get in the space available, 0.5mm higher lead than the original screw. (less? its been a while...)
made a new nut as a sleeve, OD and ID threads, extends to back of saddle.
lock it off, and the crossfeed acts as normal on the ID.
lock the leadscrew and use the nut/sleeve, thats 0.5mm resolution/turn as the ID fights the OD...

I have a friend who hooked a baldor tool grinder up to a vfd and over drove it by 50%, parts of the wheel were imbedded in the ceiling. I was definitely going out of my way to stay out of line with the wheel, but I felt so uncomfortable the entire time I was running it that I am making a guard before next time.

I wonder how much that cutting the keyways made the shaft shift a little? Assuming of course that the shaft was turned to size and then the keyways cut. Would love to have a tool post grinder, but the first job for it would be to true up my tapered lathe chuck jaws. Insert eye roll here.

Great point! This was 4140 prehard, so I would assume it has a fair amount of internal stress. But the runout was present right at the end by the center, just good old fashioned garbage machining.

I also have a long beard. So being aware of that I usually wear a face shield that helps hold my beard back. Otherwise I just dont get close to anything that can present a danger to myself. Ok, a few times I have secured my beard using a rubber band but thats not a thing.
