Hearing "the late great John Wilson" really made me sad, still can't believe he's gone. The biggest inspiration to me and my fishing, and certainly part of my early obsession as a child with fishing.
it really was, the filming under water and the relaxed feel made it very enjoyable, plus of course all the great action , and not the whooping and self appreciation you used to get from matt hayes!!

I used to fish that weirpool on the Lea many years ago. It was always crammed with chub. Never had anything over 4lb, but plenty of them. Thanks for bringing back memories.
I did see a 6lb’er from there once about 30 odd years ago, one of the biggest chub I’ve seen. On a trip to the old mill meadow in Broxbourne I had a lot of chub to 4lb, but saw a monster caught by someone fishing under the railway bridge (a non fishing area), it was huge! I miss those days back in the 80’s and early 90’s on the Lea.
Just recently found the series on Prime. Absolutely the ultimate fishing programme ever.!! The camera work, amazing, not only on top but underneath the water as well. Missed it first time round but glad I found it eventually. A must see for all anglers.

Drennen always screen the best videos, superb, some of the tackle used took me back to happier days, imagine if they would have had the use of Acolyte rods like we do these days.

That was a great look back on some specimen river fishing. Sadly a dying thing since the reintroduction of the Otter which is devastating small river fish stocks.
@Mark Hepworth Mine was. Like I've been saying for years, bigger rivers can sustain the otter, smaller ones can't. We've lost the once prolific river Teme. The Wye isn't a patch on what it was and it's not a rare thing to catch fish with bites out of them. You may be enjoying some good fishing now but it won't last!! As the otter breeds, fish stocks will lessen and the longer Anglers remain apart, the longer it will continue and the worse it will get.
It's way to easy to blame the Otter, they are a natural part of our environment and belong there and for the longest of times fish and Otters lived side by side in some beautiful, heavily populated waters (see Issac Walton). I'd be more inclined to look at the specimen anglers of the 90's and 2000's and farmers to account for the problems of river fishing today. There were so many pictures of fish coming out of our rivers at that time with huge distended stomachs from specimen anglers putting kilo after kilo of bait into swims, I remember those images of Barbel that looked more like Carp appearing weekly in AT. As with humans I would imagine that obese fish have more difficulty reproducing and have generally shorter lifespans added to which the chemical pollution wreaked by the farming industry nowadays I think I can safely suggest that the otter is less of a problem than the current paradigm suggests.
@@Para2normal You're forgetting that back in the 50's and before there was also otter hunting going on. Every predator needs it's numbers controlling. It isn't a bad thing for it more of a good thing if it stops disease from spredding. By removing a certain percentage of animals you also remove some of the threat of disease from spreading because it removes a link from the chain. less animals bump into less of their own species and so they don't get to spread it. Equally there is also more territory and so more food for them which in turn prevents them from becoming poorly because they're well fed and eating a balanced diet. As for blaming the farmers.....yes the reason was down to pesticides and it was actually an otter hunt who pointed out that there was a significant drop in the number of otter about to DEFRA (another reason why hunting did them good, the hunts could monitor their numbers). I'm afraid these days it's more to do with Super Markets and the massive chicken farming that goes on for the super markets (again, yes by farmers but also because the super markets see a need for so many) that sees all the nitrates ending up in the rivers.
Everything you say has validity, I don't believe in hunting animals to kill for "sport" but I understand your view on controlling the numbers of predators, I would argue that predator/prey cycles are well understood in Ecology and we have little to worry about in that respect. Where the predator/prey cycle becomes a problem is with the interjection of external stimuli, such as, as you rightly say the massive farms called for by our demand for huge quantities of meat with poor regulation and enforcement regarding waste disposal.
Sadly fish stocks in rivers have been largely destroyed by the ill advised reintroduction of otters and uncontrolled flocks of cormorants. When I was a boy the Lea in Hertfordshire was a great roach fishery but 50 years later you won’t find a single one. Until the predators are subject to control many of our rivers will remain empty of fish
Totally agree, they did a national European otter restocking program about 15 yrs ago. Don’t forget all the water companies dumping sewage into the rivers all the time.
Chub, my childhood nemesis. by the Danube. The big ones, they'd gobble anything, like floating pieces of bread, apricot halves, June beetles, half a minnow...greedily! Until you tried to hide a hook inside, then they suddenly became wary! They seemed to suddenly become psychic, able to receive the fisherman's thoughts. They sniffed and turned away... the boy still had much to learn about fishing. Did he learn? Sometimes I wonder.
Grew up fishing the Lea, and it's relief channel, best childhood memories I have. Cant see any of us getting permission from the Lord & Lady landowners, to fish where them big pike were caught! That said, I've seen 25+lb pike caught on the main Lea, in the boat marina at Waltham cross by one of me pals, now every fish left in the Lea ends up on someone's plate, shame.

Used too fish the Crown from 1975 up till Redlands left, loved the Millstream had some hidden swims i kept to myself, Roach, Perch, Chub, Tench , loads of Bleak , Pike in the winter any swim. The Heartbreak Pit , It was my Uncle that started me there and Roydon ( The Globe ) Memories Tightlines 🎣🎣🎣

I have just one question, how do 3 rods with alarms become 2 rods and alarms and then become 3 again? 1:14:10 the bite, 3 rods and yet whilst playing the roach that apparently gave that bite, those 3 rods become 2 with just one rod still out and two alarms for that rod and the one he holding and playing hehe and then when on landing the fish later on at 1:16:09 woahhh, back to two rods on alarms in background and the rod hes holding lol. Just funny how it all changed from the bite, during the fight and yet all had the same conversation whilst landing it from the bite lol I loved this upload though, was awesome!!

On the basis you'd only watch this if you liked angling what the hell did the 28 people who gave it a thumbs down expect? How could you better the venues and the size of the fish?!

@Mark Hepworth it will not last bud.. you enjoy it whilst you got it.. we all had the same thoughts as you where I’m from. The otters were around but didn’t seem to be a problem. Then before you know it the fishing gets slower and slower fish become less and less and unfortunately by the time you realise what’s going on.. it’s too late to do anything.
@Mark Hepworth but I think your not considering the fact that otters in this country are top of the food chain.. we can’t control the number and there’s nothing over here that can.. 20years ago you said you have been seeing them.. well 25 years ago they were on the brink of extinction. So really they have slowly been bouncing back in the time you have seen them... Now there in a position were they are wide spread. Other than road accents and natural corses they are just going to spread and spread and course more damage. I would say the cormorants are more of a problem than the otters; after all otters are/were native to the inland U.K, unlike cormorants.
