The squadron that flew the mission became known as the dambusters, and they had to fly their modified Wellington bombers through winding canyons, line up with the target, drop to 75 feet and reduce speed, and then release the bomb. Think star wars trench run, but the trench is like winding road. Only about a quarter of the squadron survived the mission, but they succeeded in destroying the dams, which pretty much destroyed the German war effort. They even had a black squadron dog named "nigger"

These were designed to break Dams in WW2. And the fine folks at Buffalo Airways recreated this drop from a Dc2 not too many years ago.
The bomb made for the dams in Ruhr Distrikt, where much bigger, about 5 tons, had to be carried by Lancaster heavy bombers, these bombs, dropped by DH. Mosquito where used against, against ships and ship locks

This was a half tonne test bomb called 'Highball' intended to hit ships. Primarily ones laid up protected by netting, like the Tirpitz. It was dropped by an incredible plane largely made out of wood, called the Mosquito. Both the bomb and the plane are testament to the madcap ingenuity of British wartime industry.

Tirpitz itself was actually taken out by large Tallboy bombs, two direct hits and a close miss caused it to rapidly capsize, eliminating the primary target this weapon was intended for, so the Upkeep bomb remained more famous.

Highball was intended to be used against Japanese shipping using DH Mosquitoes flying from aircraft carriers. The war ended while they were on the way out. Test pilot Eric Brown proved that a plane which stalled at 115 mph could be landed at 80 mph and stopped by carrier arrester gear. He was the first to land a twin on a carrier and the first to land a jet on a carrier.
