apple just forced themselves to have at least 16gb of ram on their next MacBook airs
They sure do
No, they forced us to buy tech with 16 Gb, don’t you get that. No one is buying large, overpriced storage anymore (with cheap cloud storage) so they will now take your money with more RAM. They don’t need to run their AI on your machine, they chose to, because they are greedy
I called it...They cheat people with so little RAM!
iPads with 16gb are gonna be expensive
No.... they don't care, it's up to you if you want to give the money or not!
Microsoft in the 80s: 640kb ram should be enough for everyone.
Apple in the 2020s: 8gb ram should be enough for everyone.
Apple in the 2030s: 32GB RAM should be enough for everyone...But we still only put 8GB in the base model. Pay us $1,200 more and your computing experience won't get hurt... 😉
They have 8 GB in the base model since when? 2015? It is outrageous.
Apple or byers, blame dumb people for buying the lowest common denominator for a system they will own out to 7 years easily. Fault here is on the consumer. Goes for Gamer also, buying the lowers hardware because next year magic is sure to come.
playing devils advocate here, but why is 8gb so bad? Most macbook users are college students and casual users, who don’t need 16gb for youtube and a few chrome tabs
@@sippingthe If you don't need more than 8 GB, you don't need a Macbook. ;)
Who ever thought that 8gb was enough RAM in the first place
It's enough for lite work. I managed to get away with just 8 gigs of ram for a little over a year before upgrading to 16 gigs. I never had a problem with the machine, even if it did start using swap memory. When I started taking college classes, that all changed. I had no choice but to bump it up to 16 gigs of ram and a 1TB ssd drive.
8GB would be enough like 10 years ago.
Apps customisation actually reduce the needs for bigger RAM, so believe it or not MacOS can actually runs decently on 8GB, 16 is overkill.
I do product and interior rendering, stable diffusion, product design in fusion 360, animation, graphic design, coding, light game making, and social media video editing.... I have 8gb MacBook Pro and 16gb Alienware, the only difference is rendering times. 8gb is underrated
@@UberFoX 8GB is should be more than enough for most of your daily use (like surfing, mailing, music, videos, developer tools if you are a developer or if you are a photographer or movie maker then for your editing tools).
However, one should know that RAM has no direct relation with speed. The fact is, the more RAM you have the more apps you can use in background because every application need to load certain files in the RAM to save your running application’s state. When the system has more applications running than the RAM can handle then the system tends to lag, that’s when your system feels slow.
Nowadays, all the applications are memory intensive (eats a lot of RAM) and one of the best example is Google Chrome. Trust me Chrome eats a lot of your RAM. Never used Chrome, that’s one example of Apps Customisation gone failed.
So 8GB or 16GB? The answer to this question is 16GB of RAM in not a necessity in most of the cases, it’s an option and it will cost you a fortune. If you can manage your machines user initiated background tasks and Apps then 8GB is enough. You can keep more than enough Applications running in 8GB of RAM. Also, there are these memory cleaner Apps available for free if you ever run out of Memory.
I’m soo ready for this AI bubble to pop. Eventually people will realize it’s really not that useful
I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Maybe some hype companies will fail, but not the technology.
Take a drink everytime they say AI at a new tech release and you’ll need your stomach pumped
@@jeffr_ac Google Search still gives better results than all the AI.
Even though a bit overhyped, I do find it useful. Mostly because it can handle context when you’re doing a search or using it for translation.
From 2014-2016 I worked at “Happy Mac” diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading Intel Mac hardware issues.
In many - if not most- cases, I was telling customers to EITHER 1. open less apps at once, less web tabs at once, and reduce items on the desktop (as RAM was used to make “Quick Look” available for all desktop files, OR 2. upgrade the RAM. These days, the RAM is not upgradable (or difficult & risky to upgrade)
That's 10 years ago and they still ship their base models with just 8Gb.... Same with storage 256Gb. That's the size of my camera's SD card. It's pathetic how they rip you off. Buying (semi) modern specs will dubbel the price in case of the mac mini.
@@socialhostage8534 The basic models are only useful if you really only want to do a bit of office work, online banking and surf the Internet. As soon as you plan to do more with it, it quickly becomes significantly more expensive. What I find much more problematic is that flash memory cannot be easily replaced. This is exactly what will probably be the first to die. This is especially the case by small storage, whose lifespan is even shorter than other (bigger) storage on a Mac device.
While using Android Studio, the swap usage goes up to 4gb. Made a mistake buying Mac. Had budget issues so could not buy 16gb variant. I should have gone with Windows.
I just ordered a macbook air m1 base model with 8 gigs coz that was the only one i could afford.
Now i am worried😢
@@suryaj4928you plan on using Docker or Android Studio ?
If yes, cancel it.
Do you think its time for Apple to make say 12GB or Say 16GB the Lowest amount of RAM on a Mac?
I think its time you buy me a MacBook 😁
16 would be best
Ofcourse ram is so cheap - if they can give us over powered cpu's that we cant utilize why dont they just give us huge ram on products tooo ( then we can also not utilize it....or can we :) Everything is copy and paste and nothing works from generation to generation =- ios copy paste to ipad os = processors from macbook and min pcs copy paste to ipad ....IT FEELS LIKE WINDOWS --- when there is problems they just make a new one instead of fixing the problems. Oh so now will the new ipads and old ipads with 8gig run the AI if the macbook cant even run it?
I want a iPhone 16 pro max 2 tb
@@quake3445 I wish I could do it for everyone
It's called a "Beta" release for a Reason. "Apple" have been in the game far to long, to screw up the AI functionality for 8gb users.(majority user base) I'm no expert but I assume the AI Apps will push API calls over the web, hence most of the heavy lifting will processed by the Apple servers. Unlike some of those offline AI models. I assume you have used ChatGPT, well my dad is running it on a 10 year old laptop without any problems lol!
Remember when you guys said that 12gb of RAM on Androids was overkill? Now, what do you say? That's why Samsung released Galaxy AI to all old phones too! 😂😂
Most of it is on cloud. Even though I've never said it's an overkill, they're not running on-device anyway.
Well, it was, but not anymore
@comrade_rahul_1 Did you even see the release?????? Most features are on device only, they bragged about it left and right. The cloud based features are anything that requires ChatGPT. How ignorant are you guys??
@comrade_rahul_1 It's on device only buddy, go and see the release again. Only cloud based features are anything that needs ChatGPT. Educate yourself.
@@comrade_rahul_1 many are running on device. The ones running on cloud are the ones apple is running on cloud too. Most AI features will still only be possible on cloud with Apple too
Matt says ...you want to upgrade to at least 16GB of RAM. " Oh wait, nothing is upgradeable on a Mac anymore...

_Sound of me popping open the RAM cover on the back of my non-Apple laptop, pulling out the 4GB slice that's in there, and inserting 2x 16GB slices which cost a _*_lot_*_ less than the price difference between an 8GB MacBook and a 16GB one..._ 😉
Maybe I will buy an iPhone this year. All my devices are from Apple except my phone, that's just a Motorola G54...
Great video, the only apple gear I've been considering this year is an AirTag for my car. I'm worried about forgetting where I parked sometimes 🤣
I just ordered a macbook air m1 base model with 8 gigs coz that was the only one i could afford.
Now i am worried😢
I'm not going to lie, the fact that apple is still putting a measly 8gb of ram inside their $1000 Macbooks is just outrageous in my opinion. I've kinda always wanted an apple silicone macbook but couldn't due to the pricing, winning the Giveaway would be really nice ;)
silicon, silicone is the rubbery stuff
I plan on getting an Iphone 16 pro and also an Macbook Pro M3 Pro. I am still on Iphone 10. And really need to upgrade for student stuff :) hopw i get an chance of winning. Thank you!!!
Thank God I just bought M 3 Pro with 18 GB RAM version
It’s silly that they are selling a 2000€ laptop with 8GB RAM. It’s a trap. 48GB minimum on M3 Max is nice. Can’t make that mistake if you buy M3 Max.
@@sebbbi2 Not their fault if people don't educate themselves to what is worth buying. Not like Apple is the only company selling low tier equipment that no one should be buying any longer. But I don't see even the 8GB been burden by this once the final OS comes out. Just way to much speculation on a OS not yet fully optimized or cooked.
I still really hope the 8GB macbook can handle it somehow hah.
I have the M1, which was a good choice considering the data science degree im doing, but at the end of my degree I will be working with much bigger datasets, so the 8GB I have could be a problem. Well, a macbook with a new chip and more RAM would def. speed up the research I have to work on. I don't really have a budget to plan a new tech purchase, but if I had I would buy a better macbook!
Good luck to everyone! #giveaway
I am still running my 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro. Definitely time for an upgrade!! Considering the new MacBook Air.
That MacBook was alrady bad from the start i mean wtf ist that dual core doin inside a PRO macbook...

Cool!
@Woke_Imperialist6066 So basically a MacBook from 2012? or an iMac from 2020?
@Woke_Imperialist6066but that copilot + pc is basically a spyware
@Woke_Imperialist6066 then support the same practices but with either an Intel CPU that only offers 2-3 hours of battery life, not pushing it or an AMD CPU that gets better battery life but weaker graphics? Or the fact you HAVE to be plugged into the charger to get full power? Better off just buying whatever you want, as both sides aren't any better. Don't get me started on windows recall or all the other bloat in Windows 11 that makes the entire OS heavier to run than any previous version, esp all the telemetry mining Windows 10 and everything since does... Both Apple and every other OEM solder components down to the motherboard, or if they don't make the machine extremely difficult to upgrade, or they build a machine that won't last a year (I'm looking at you HP).
@Woke_Imperialist6066 Macbooks have very good battery life tho and my hp laptop battery life is crap and it's around 1000 nzd
They've said you need 16gb of ram for macs now.
"Predictive code completion requires a Mac with Apple silicon and 16GB of unified memory, running macOS 15."

I don't think anyone with rational sense would've thought you could realistically run Apple Intelligence on a device already using so much ram.
In 2024 I wanted to get a MacBook but I’m on budget so I’m deciding to get the m1 or the 2020 intel i5 MacBook Air cause I found a seller I know selling the Intel Mac in 290 and the m1 is 530$ I think so idk
I’ve got a 2020 M1 MacBook Air with 16Gb of ram & 1Tb SSD. The SSD is overkill but the machine still runs nice and smooth in 2024
Well then I'm happy I decided to go with the 16 gb RAM option with my M1 MacBook Pro 13" so I can use Apple Intelligence with MacOS Sequoia.
Still with my iPhone XS, 5 years old now! Considering to upgrade to the new iPhone this year! Thanks for the video, Matt!
I'm planning to get a macbook air M3 512GB SSD, 16GB unified memory

I have the same spec but the 2023 version and love it. I also run Windows 11 on it flawlessly.
All falling mega corporations like Apple have been behaving and showing the signs we see from Apple. I think the writing is on the wall for Apple. What follow are the curses and and misfortunes and then the end will come. Apple has lost its First Love. No point living without love.

Wait for M4 if you can. Seems a much bigger leap.
If you're planning to use it for content creation or gaming, I'd recommend 24 gigs bare minimum, if you can afford it.

The worst thing ever discovered on M4 iPad Pro: Since 4Gb Ram modules cost more than 6Gb, Apple is buying the 6Gb modules, but scraping 2Gb of Ram from it just to have the 8Gb option.
I would be glad for a ram MODULE. But looks like we have to deal with ram CHIPS.
I think 8GB of RAM should be removed. It’s not enough anymore.
If Apple Intelligence runs well with 8GB RAM on the iPhone 15 Pro, I don't see why it shouldn't on Macs with the same amount of RAM. It's also worth noting that the majority of Mac users probably have 8GB RAM, so I'm sure Apple would make sure it runs well for them.
This year, I'm probably going to buy new AirPods to replace my current ones. The batteries die really fast nowadays 😅

I might be wrong but doesn't Apple Intelligence works mostly with the NPU? If that's the case maybe 8Gigs is enough? I'm a light user and no I don't open dozens of tabs on a web browser or even work with more than two apps open at one time. I will have multiple docs open in my work flow but that's the most with maybe mail and music in the background.
Why would you buy a Mac if you don’t need a good computer
@@TinyBearTim After using Windows at work and home for over 20 years, I was sick of it. When I started my own private business I felt compelled to use it again and after 2 consecutive laptops died in 5 years I'd had enough. Good to know 8GB is not enough for the "basic usage" of apple computer in future. I am looking to get a new MacBook Pro as I am still using my MacbookPro 2012 :D
Wow! 8GB of RAM is not enough… who would have ever thought💁♂️
Whoever bought the 8gb RAM version needs to upgrade their buying decisions not the RAM. Also I feel like this video is for people who are clueless about the state of Apple and technology at large.
Sadly, I had bought the 8 GB RAM version of M3 MBA a few weeks ago, just about a week prior to WWDC... A few days later, when I chose to upgrade to the beta I saw how that 8 GB of RAM was certainly not enough. Just doing my normal basic computing (browser, YT video, text editor, Mail) I had swap used and a lot of cache. Ridiculous. I returned it to Amazon and they took out $33 from my refund! I'm so mad. But now I'm waiting on the 16 GB with 512 GB storage to ship. Apparently it won't ship until the first week or so of July. I'm so mad.
In my not too strong mobile GPU, there is 8GB VRAM (and 32GB system memory). In my 3060 desktop GPU, I have 12GB and that is far from "pro". For me, professional work starts at 64-128GB RAM. :)
I don't know why they have to skimp out. RAM is still relatively cheap. There is no reason not to have 32GB of RAM as a minimum. Especially since MACs are more likely to be used for media creation. If they want to do tiers, then have the Mac Book Air have 32GB of RAM but the Mac Book Pro will have 64 or 128. I think the soldered ram is a scam anyway. You're paying a premium for Mac Products, give them a premium in ram. ANd give them better storage options 1TB, 2 TB and 4TB. Make MAC a premium product again!
was planning on getting m2 8gb but now reconsidering....
I agree. A MacBook needs 16 GB of RAM
They have them just buy the 16GB one, this is all on the consumer that keeps buying the 8GB. Stop buying the bottom tier system and it will go away.
And then people bought the new M3 8Gb macbook Pro and then 1 month later, they hear it wont support apple AI.... WHAT THE FUCK!
I just bought the macbook pro 8Gb 2024 (I dont do heavy loads on it, basically web and small games, work but not heavy loads)
M4 16 Gb RAM will be too powerful for Apple's interests
I am planning to get iPhone 16 Pro when they came out. I am now using iPhone 13. So i think 16 Pro will be good upgrade!
Love your videos!
Thanks Matt!
Sure you have a solid point but the 8Gb allowed someone like me who have been saving for like 3 years to be able to enter the Apple eco system with the 2020 air.

Apple Intelligence runs locally, not in a server like ChatGPT, that's no surprise it needs more RAM.
Evert year new games uses more resources and people need to get new GPUs to play the new games, it's the same.
Want to use edge games/features you'll need to update your machine.
I’m planning on upgrading from my mid-2012 macbook pro to a m3 pro macbook pro base model. Because that extra RAM does make a difference 🫠. Hopefully this giveaway will be the one
I'm planning on getting some AirPods Pro this year. I already have an M2 mini and M2 IPad Pro, so I don't really need much else. If I won this laptop you're giving away, I would give it to my mom.

So, your low end spec MacBook crashed under the first beta version of a new OS. Who would think???!!!!
Even if Apple increases the RAM on its base models, you'll have to pay more, which already happened with the 15 Pro Max having 256GB storage on the base model.
I have the M2 MacBook Air with 8gb of ram, and it shows in daily activities, now I regret I haven't bought 16GB. Thinking about upgrade if not in 2024 then 25.
GIVEAWAY!!! Buddy, I'm going back to school this fall after 3 years of job. I need to by a phone and laptop. I'll buy an iPhone 15 next month (currently using OnePlus 7T bought in December 2019)
This MacBook Pro would be BIG HELP. Else I'll buy a MacBook Air M1 2020. (major budget constraints)
Even 16GB of RAM is ridiculous. Especially for a pro device. Even 32GB is hardly enough. Never had less on a Macbook Pro. Apple selling pro devices with below 24 GBs is really a joke. And that is without AI...
I would really like to get something from Apple. A Macbook would be cool but we'll see🤷🏼♂️. Maybe that interesting Apple Ring or the Galaxy Ring from Samsung. That sounds very futuristic.
My 2019 MacBook Air is definitely due for a replacement. Initially thought I’d go for a M3 Air with 8GB. Guess I’ll have to go for 16GB ram instead.
Wow, who even is surprised… 8GB isn’t enough for a decade. I upgraded my 2012 non-retina MBP (that had SO-DIMM) to 16GB in 2014 as I regularly filled up 8GB by just multitasking in several programs. Since then all of my Computers with RAM sticks have 32GB or more as ram sticks could be bought cheap. And my M1 MBP I equipped with 32GB as I want to have no RAM restrictions for the time I own it. I would not buy a PC with soldered 8GB ever, it’s not enough for a decade. For light tasks 16GB minimum, for anything more 32 all the way. Don’t cripple your 2000$ Mac by cheaping out on RAM. it’s like building a kit car with racing components and then choose a weak engine that cripples the whole car.
I haven't owned an Apple product in some years, but I use a cheapo x64 laptop with 4GB of RAM and one of the many forks of Debian. I _already have_ window tiling (And have had it for 4+ years) and if I ever need more RAM this laptop can accept up to 64GB of it, and I can upgrade this entirely by myself. 🐧💻👍
What disturbs me - If 8GB RAM won't be enough for MacOS Sequoia with AI - Is that Apple don't offer 32GB and 64GB options. Is 24GB (The max) going to be enough to handle Sequoia, AI, _and_ working with large multimedia workflows all at once? It also seems a bit odd that you can only order a Mac with enough RAM to see you through to about MacOS 18, which further cements Apples _forced upgrade_ marketing model. 💸
Say what you like about Apple products making things more straightforward. They're convenient - I won't dispute that - But my 2012-vintage laptop can do something *no* M-based Mac is ever likely to achieve; _A 15-20 year lifespan!_ 😇
I am currently in the looks for a MacBook Pro and I was also wondering if 8gb are even enough, given that my desktop windows pc has 32gb. Apple claims „8gb apple silicon are 16gb intel“ but yea good that I was on the look for a 16gb anyways
In fact I’m looking to buy in this year one MacBook with an Apple Chip because I’ve got the 2020 before the launch of the new model for my university 😅
Thx for the suggestion to buy one with 16 of ram, I think it’s very worth it in large time because of the updates 🎉
It should be this:
Any consumer base models: 12 GB of RAM
Any Pro base models: 16 GB of RAM
I'm playing of buying a Macbook for my youtube channel this year. Was thinking M2 Pro or M3 Pro
I plan on getting a used a macbook pro 2020 M1 16gb ram from ebay for video editing/work
since just finished college, thanks
8GB RAM in 2024? I'm currently thinking of upgrading my PC to 32GB. 16GB should be the minimum nowadays.
I consider at these there options:
For photo editing and light 4k video editing.
MacBook Air M3 13 inch with 8gb ram, 10 core gpu and 512gb ssd
MacBook Air M3 15inch 8gb ram, 10 core gpu , 256gb ssd
Or
MacBook Pro M3 14 inch with 8gb ram, 512ssd and 10 core gpu
In my country price between these 3 is around 100-150usd.
What I don’t see often is a demo of how much worse 8GB of RAM is compared to 16GB in practical use cases. And I’m not talking about loading the machines up with the most memory intensive tasks you can find. Or 1 bajillion chrome tabs. Of course, more RAM will always win. And you shouldn’t try to load up DaVinci Resolve on a base model. But I suspect we don’t all need 16GB like RUclips keeps telling us.
Edit: Lastly, why is everyone ignoring macOS’s excellent memory management capabilities?
Waiting for MacBook Air with M4 if available at the end of 2024…🤷🏻♂️ probably with 16GB of RAM 😉☝🏻
As I still use an Intel Hackintosh, I plan to buy some 16GB Apple Silicon hardware. I'm currently going back and forth between a Mac Mini, a 13 inch MacBook Air M3 or a 14 inch MacBook Pro. So, the giveaway would end my debate... ;)
