Hey, brother, I feel your pain. In East TX here, and I understand the pain from last year. We sold a lot of hay last year early for normal prices and then the rain stopped and we were left high and dry. I basically took on more debt through the year. I'm hoping this year is decent and I can just get back to even. I like your idea of of a standard switch box for swapping tractors. I have to do that on occasion due to break downs and it is a pain. Reduce net tension on early bales. I moved to 50% early, then back to 70% for nice tight bales after it gets shined up. I run a 604R...makes good bales. I also have a driveline through a rake to run the rake baler combo. I use a JD 705 rake (hydraulic). I have problems with the driveline getting pushed forward from the baler turning even though the sliding baler shaft is well greased and easy to slide. This will tend to ruin bearings early in the rake driveline. For some of the fussing I would never go back to a 2 step rake and bale process. I mostly do work solo.
We had a good spring down south, which also means flooded hay market. Almost 650 bales off 100 acres in a flooded hay market. Summer will surely be a different story.
That is not the case in Carolina..... most of the Cool grass farmers are going pretty strong, but the Bermuda Grass growers are behind because of cool nights..... Our market is small bales, and we round bale for our benefit, on transport and storage...... We convert weekly..... try to keep 2 53ft trailers loaded...... (39- 21 Bale Baron bundles) Drop and Hook at stores
@ Farming for Fun and Profit I'm just south of homie in floresville so we got big rain. The grass got 3-4 ft tall. I bale 4x6 and getting into the field was tough. Sunk my new dually. We all alternate good years, but with our droughts, if u got hay on hand u make bank. Not this spring, will hold
We also have king ranch blue stem taking over our farms which grows great, but can't sell as horse feed most of the time. It's garbage cattle pasture, but tx dot planted and took over everything here

Been There back in the Mid 80s Everything painted "Nellie Blue" We probably got somewhere near 800 4x5s left from last year..... It takes about 42 bales to make 39 bundles......We sell rounds and bundles daily......I joke that our hay season runs from Jan 1st till Dec 21st. then it starts over again........
