Passing Half Guard (Coyote/Dog Fight)

- The Coyote Guard or Dog Fight half guard position is extremely powerful and difficult to pass. In addition if you get swept from it you often expose a back take or guard pass, so because of that it’s very critical to know how to defend and pass. This video I overview the mechanics for stopping my opponent from coming up into me and how to secure your pass finish grips.

feel like im watchin an advanced class the instructor holds after class just for his fave students. this is beautiful, standing up from half guard is such a brilliant idea. thanks as always!
Yeah that’s the vibe I’m going for just showing all the details I would if someone asked me after class
Very helpful. I got caught in this last night and it was giving me fits, especially with the lapel. I tried the back step and that was a huge mistake!
Excellent video once again... Thanks! But 3 quarter Mount, Jon...
That lapel feed to make the frame is awesome--that never would have occurred to me.
DAMN! This is good stuff thanks Jon Thomas
No problem buddy hope it helps
Someone was giving me a hard time, my trainingpartner using this against me! Had watched some jon danahers halfguard, was planning to incorporate some new tricks. Had the underhook - Couldnt get anything going. Afterwards he was like: "yeah i learnt this new grip from the most famous ginger in bjj, Jon Thomas."
Hah. I needed this BEFORE I rolled today. My coach tells me a good strategy is to force 1/2 g to pass. I say bullshit unless the guy on bottom doesn’t know anything after failing a ton and them getting to deep half, sweeping me etc...I hope this helps me. This is what you need to show more of Jon is positions like this we encounter in our rolls on a daily basis. Not that crazy crap you were showing over there in Finland the past few weeks.
you are just shit passing from half guard, its one of the best places to be when you get hard cross face pressure
Absolutely stellar video. This should not have been free.
Could have saved myself years of getting coyoted by finding this earlier. Thanks a lot, stupid algorithm.
Nice details. I’m a small black belt in a gym of big wrestlers and always have issues with them wrestling up from this position. I’ll play with these and see how they work for me. 👊🏻👊🏻
That leg tip at 3:35 is great! Thank you!
If gym re-open this year in France, FOR SURE i'm gonna use this ! Thanks !
The bottom underhook is also a saviour
It’s actually insane how powerful that side push down grip is to control opponent while passing half guard come up sweeps.
You are a gold mine.
Brilliant explanation- Many thanks!
your videos are insanely helpful, i’m impressing everyone at the gym by using the stuff you show on the fly, works 50% of the time since i never drill it haha
Game changer, thank you!
JT: come around this way
cameraman: [takes his fuckin time]
Flexing with the new gi
I will pretend you filmed this for me personally 🙏 Had luck after you pointed me towards the Rodolfo matches, still working out the kinks.
Also Leandro Lo vs Lepri there is one of the matches they fought Lo does it
Awesome John as always! Can you do some videos about the matrix guard with Tommy and Espen?
Yeah I will be doing videos on the matrix with both Tommy and espen
@@JonThomasBJJ awesome! Thanks !
Jon, at 3:10 when you talked about them catching your leg for a backtake, were you talking about them catching the back stepping leg with their left leg? Because that’s what one of my training partners does and I was looking for alternatives like the ones you show here. I’ve also seen people show to windshield wipe tightly over their opponent’s left leg with the back stepping leg, as if that might prevent them from catching the leg for the backtake, but I haven’t seen footage yet that shows that it always works in competition.
Super OSS
amazing stuff Professor!
I have a question, When I put my knee to partner's far hip, his KNEE TORQUE pressure does not allow it. what do I have to do against knee torque pressure?
#boom 🔥🔥🔥💪🏾 #Oss
Do u shove his “bottom” knee back as u force his hips to square up with ur free hand so he can’t re-guard/elevate you? I imagine thats pretty situational but the half guard monster I tried this on yesterday was able to pull his knee back and keep me from the pass (but was frustrated he didn’t get a sweep so, win). Also, thanks a ton for this. Awesome.
I try to avoid grabbing his bottom leg with my left hand much because if he gets the grip on it he can off balance me forward.
Exactly! Ended up having a little success by blading myself at a steep angle, like I straightened up as I re-cut and hunted the underhook after I had gotten my knee through. I just repeated the post on his side/flatten his hips if I couldnt get the knee through on the first attempt. Problem was I couldn’t get chest/chest very fast...oh well. I’ll keep workin it. Big fan, really appreciate your work.
You're more helpful than you realize, want to be youtube friends?
Do you have anything that will work with no gi
Ensina ha fazer gurd
coyote guard sucks to be in haha
Great details! How would this work no gi? Would you post on the ribs or hip?
Yeah you could try but I feel without the gi grip you won’t be able to do it as well. So I would focus on grabbing the back leg and pulling up on it. Since you don’t have the pant to grip you can hug it with your arm. I mention it briefly on this video.
Great thanks
Where is the Blue gi from?
Tatami
@@jaychow94 Yep. Wasn't able to find this specific Tatami gi though. I'll keep looking.
Excellent technique, as well as the explanation of its proper usage . I look forward to more your videos. Thanks again
