I don't know what malls are thinking with the carpeting. I live in Minnesota where there is one mall that they removed the tile and replaced with carpet. Insanity! My sympathy goes out to the maintenance staff.
Thank you for uploading this! This is the mall that I grew up with. I live very close to Kingsport and I have so many great memories here. It's nice to see that it's still around, even if it isn't as popular as it once was. It will always hold a special place in my heart!
Just got back from this mall last weekend. Watched a movie at the NCG theater, and its an extremely nice Theater. While we didn't do any shopping, its still a gorgeous mall inside. Much different from how it was when I was a child and came here (when my grandpa would do all his shopping at this huge sears in the mall, everything from tires on his car, to appliances, to eyeglasses).
Hull also owns Prince of Orange in Orangeburg SC. They covered the floors with the same carpet and empty walls with the same “local pics and history” flavor. A very clean and tidy place, but just a numb experience.
This is the mall i grew up with, I Used to take music lessons there back in 2010 and it was on the decline bad. Now me and my friend just go there to walk laps and talk about what used to be there remembering the times we had as kids
Instead of carpets some polished multicolored terrazzo would look nice in this mall. You can still have a beige/brown color scheme look good with the right decor; Hull has yet to master that :/
That asphalt in the parking lot looks like it’s in serious need of refurbishment. You’re walking up to that very nice looking remodeled mall entrance across a sea of faded and crumbling asphalt.
There are a lot of pictures to find to cover up all of those vacant spaces… ! I agree with you about the ‘walls’ .. what is the plan or is it out of sight out of mind ?
my dentists waiting room has far more appeal than this mall does. its a shame because it does have potential just rip up the carpet & replace it with a colorful tile floor add a fountain or 2 just to start but first they need a new owner
I visited Fort Henry Mall as a child and always thought the aesthetic looked pretty cool. Today it reminds me of a funeral home visitation room with that God awful beige carpet and those 1982 chandeliers that Hull thinks are so cutting edge and modern. Heaven forbid they add some fountains ⛲️ to the mix to at least stir a little nostalgia and visual/auditory interest.
This mall used to be colorful and awesome. But hull got their hands on this mall. It had this circus themed carpet and when i was young i liked it. Also the pinnacle in bristol also affected this mall. I used too come here all the time but i dont really go to kingsport anymore
Hull malls are definitely some of the most unattractive malls I've seen. _Very_ uncompelling aesthetics. It's sad to see cool malls with neat aesthetics become nothing more than empty halls that remind me of nursing homes.
@@Mapmaker1559 And the ceiling lights they use are also very boring, as well. And Doomie was right that those ugly ceiling lights, give the floor and stores this boring tint color when they shine onto things below.
Always love the intro of you driving us to the mall and the parking lot tour, but the music isn't quite hitting me which is sad because I love the NewRetroWave movement. The mall history lesson is boring and overshadows the music also, but I still watch and appreciate your videos. This mall isn't that bad, but the carpet is a mistake and there's not enough natural light coming from the tiny windows on the ceiling. Did you ever do a video on the Irondequoit mall?? Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Thanks again, Doomie and have a great day! :)
Carpet just isn’t a great idea in malls. Melbourne Square even went as far as to fill in the few carpeted seating areas they installed in their last major renovation with a nice dark ceramic wood look tile…nice contrast from the beige tile around it, and easier to keep clean. Carpet is just not a great idea in commercial spaces.
I dunno, with the right wood paneling, they could go for a classy "old world charm" vibe but I doubt that's gonna happen. In the end, like I said,I think a lot of these mall owners don't WANT to save these malls. To be clear, there's a definite push by the powers that be towards on-line shopping and the destruction of retail. But malls have a lot of appeal as these huge indoor areas where you can go and do lots of stuff. Now,some malls aren't salvagable. There's too much competition,it's in a bad spot,it's in a high crime area, that kind of thing. But a mall that has a good location and square footage can do all kinds of good business simply by offering what it's competitors don't. Malls used to be places you would go and have fun. Play in the arcade, see a movie, hang out with friends, get something to eat, shop a variety of stores. All kinds of things. Most of those options disappeared and now it's just overpriced crap. The same crap you can get at the big box stores for cheaper. And if you're buying crap, why not play the smallest amount for it? As money tightens and malls shrink in offerings,it becomes clear that something needs to change. I can come up with my own dream mall, but in the end,I can only guarantee it would appeal to me. 80's style neon mall with dance club and lots of fun things like a costume shop with a tailor for custom, high ticket stuff, big toy store, gaming shop, arcade, and various custom maker shops, wood working,3D printing, metal working,2D printing,t-shirts. A nice small theater, video shop, and a good food court, with mom and pop sit down restaurants. But that's me. I can't say if other people would want it. I dunno, man. Everyone has their own ideas. Maybe that's the problem,we need to find a middle ground that appeals to everyone in some way.
There are many reasons the mall never flourished. The videographer didn't do his homework... GGP never owned the mall and neither did Hocker. The demise began when JC voted for liquor by the drink. Kingsport was late getting in that game and they never recovered. Also, the city never developed around the mall to create shopping synergy. As well, the housing crash and ultimate failure of many banks. The mall lost their funding escrow as their bank went under and sold to another bank who wouldn't fund the renovations. In a way, the mall reflects Kingsport.
I have to say… I really didn’t exactly hate the interior of this mall. It did look a little less industrial than most miles, past and present modern, that I’ve seen. In fact, I have to be one of those people that slightly disagree with you about the “walling“ of malls. Frankly, I walk through a lot of malls, like Charleston town center (the Mollie review when I found your channel), and just seeing all the vacant door fronts with gates down is just more depressing than anything else, it puts the “ ALGIA“ (pain) in nostalgia. I just assume not be reminded of what once was but it isn’t now. Maybe that’s just me.
Do agree on one thing… Whether a mall is dead or not… And that’s the carpeting of moles. CTC did this about 10 years ago and I just didn’t understand it. Never mind that they would be a maintenance nightmare in any high traffic area like a mall you would have to Stanley steam them nightly to even keep them near par it would seem like to me, but also the fact that they hold so much dirt and other things that other people pick up is a whole other issue. And of course the address the issue of carpet taste with things like pattern.

This was my mall growing up. I haven’t lived in Tennessee since 2001, thank you for the journey of memories from my youth this took me on.
Hull is the only company I know of who can successfully make a mall look even more dated than it did to begin with.

Carolina Mall in Concord NC has those walls all over the place too.
This reminds me more of an airport terminal than a mall...
That restaurant on your left when you got in was a former Garfield’s/toro Mexican grill
Great commentary. I know this property well. It has always been a oddly run property even in the nineties.

Good video. Did not like the carpeting in the hallways. At least the carpeting did not have lots of gross spots on it. Thanks for filming.

Part of Hull malls' unattractiveness has got to be the ugly carpet combined with lack of maintenance.
@@pilotgrrl1 The ugly carpet is absolutely one of the hallmarks of Hull's terrible design.

This mall was also ruined by removing the escalators and elevator in the mall

Intense music for an intensely bland mall

Carpet!!! Noooooooo!!!
Looks nice overall for a Hull mall. It's look much nicer though with tile than carpet

I like the mall. but really hate the carpet
Better dull than closed I guess??? At least it was neat and clean...
It looks like a retro design. From the 60s. The carpet is less to be desired.
Hardly any shoppers. What day of the week/time of day were you there?
Monday afternoon
@@DoomieGruntVentures Usually a slow time for any mall.
