I purchased this waist belt weeks ago and have been on numerous runs. My bottle has never once caused the Velcro to come undone. It does seem like the waist pack isn't as snug against your body than it is for me (I wear mine around my stomach above the hip line). This may have been why your water bottle flops around and pulls the velcro apart. What I found works is I guide the soft end of the bottle into the pocket with one hand behind my back while the other hand holds the little pull tab / velcro area to open and close - def not as easy as just wearing a hydration bladder and hose on the back. Hope this comment helps some people!
As a trail and road long distance racer I have tried many combinations for hydration..almost anything much above 12oz will either pull down the device or cause issues with your body by being too tight..I don't like the vest type if it's hot ..1 -12oz soft type in each hand works fairly well on the road but no good if you need your hands on trails..the 1 that does work is actually a bicycle racing belt with a insulated bottle pocket..I can wear it along the spine in upright position and it doesn't bounce around or dig into my hip bones or pelvis..the ones that have 2 small bottles ,1 on each hip, also work ok with about 10oz in each bottle..I alternate bottles to keep the belt balanced ..nothing is ideal but you make do with what ya got
I agree 12oz around the waist is the most I’ve been able to carry at speed via a belt. I use a flip belt with the 11oz hard flask. Still have to use a bladder for long efforts.
I use the Ultimate directions comfort with a 500ml (17oz) in the front and back without issue. Plus 6-8 gels and my Iphone. Works perfect for a 50 miler and all my 20+ long runs. Only issue was after 2-3 months, the belt does stretch out and get loose.
I have been using Nathan VaporKrar for years and it's probably the older version of the Pinnacle coz they almost look identifcal . However, the VaporKrar has absolutely no problem for holding the water bottle for long run. I do notice there is a difference in terms of the design for the water bottle pocket though,
I use the Salomon Pulse belt, with a 500ml/17oz soft flask, and it doesn't come out. Not as much storage as your Nathan, but enough for the bottle, a phone, a key, and several gels. You could probably get another 250ml soft flask in there, but I haven't tried. I use the pole loops to stash my rain jacket if the rain stops during the run. If the bottle is on my back it bounces, but on my front, zero bounce.
I use a Nathan Peak waist pack for my shorter runs that don't require a full vest. I've had no issues with getting the hard bottle in or out while running and it doesn't bounce to any extent that it's noticeable. The capacity isn't huge, but I can fit my cell, keys, and some snacks just fine. Might be one to check out.
I know some people don’t like handhelds but I really like my amphipod handheld for medium length runs. If I need more fluid I prefer my S/lab vest over a belt.
Agree, love my 18oz amphipod handheld! But even with longer runs in the extreme heat the vest is so uncomfortably hot for me. But I do long runs and generally map them to where I know I can refill it. He’s avoiding handhelds bc he also is holding his camera.
Thank you! Handheld is where it’s at for ultras. Plus (depending on the distance) a pack and bladder. Only belt brand that works for me is UltraSpire. And only for slower training speeds.
I have never had that problem and I have been using this Nathan belt since 2019. Lately, I prefer the naked running wais tband since it can accommodate more stuff, even two water bottles with zero bounce.
Flipbelt Zipper is the King! Ran a 50km urban challenge using just the Flipbelt Zipper with 2 Solomon Soft Flasks (500ml each) and it was able to hold both soft flasks, my gels, my phone and my keys, with room to spare.
Thanks for the review. That's surprising that a Nathan pack would have such a big issue. I have the Nathan Peak Hydration Waist Pak and it works well except that I have to cinch the belt tight to the smallest part of my waist or it bounces around too much. So it feels kind of restrictive and almost seems to prevent me from taking a full lungful of air. But the bottle holster and zip pouch can both be used on the run if needed, though I usually stop and pull the pouch around to the front to access it.
I use Salmon belt Agile 500. Its has zips on both packs, does take a bit of getting used to, but works quite well for me. I don't do anything fast in it as the sloshing you were talking about get quite tiring
After using the same Nathan Vaporkrar you had I moved to the Raidlight Revolutiv 3L 1 vest which has like 60g, so probably less than this belt and extremely breathable. Definitely recommend it!
It might be worth checking out the Nathan vaporkrar. It’s a similar belt, but the back pocket design is different and, at least in my experience, holds the bottle with no problem. REI even has the lm on sale.
This is the goto belt for me. Very flexible pockets that can carry a variety of items of different sizes (including my lightweight jacket). The only downside is to get the perfect fit, need to get the size correct. This means (in my case) as I got more fit and lost weight, I had to size down to a new belt.
Naked makes a great one and the Ultimate Directions comfort is not bad either. UD stretches quickly (couple months) if you use 2 500ml soft flasks. Either is perfect for a 50k or even up to 50 miles.
Thanks for the review, Mike! I've had this belt for a couple of weeks, used it three times now. I've possibly had slightly greater success with it than you've had, but yeah, it pops out. Every time. It's a 20oz flask, but there's no way you can carry it in the pouch when it's full. And it's impossible that the designers didn't know this, so it's extra annoying that they did it anyway. It needs a zipper, or a way longer piece of velcro. Or back to the drawing board. I find that the flask stays put when it's about 75% full; just be sure to suck the water/fluid out after you bite in order to collapse the flask. Definitely not for racing, because getting the flask back in the pouch is a huge hassle; I can't really see how this could be used "on the run" (and we've got better stuff to be expending mental energy on during a race than "is my flask about to pop out?", right?) This will work for easy hot runs around the city when you won't really mind stopping for a minute to drink. And yeah, it holds a big phone (my Moto is 6.4") In a TPU case! But the zipper for the up-front pocket is pretty flimsy. Biggest pro of this belt is, for me, a Holy Grail: it. does. not. bounce. Or ride up or down. At all. It's for that reason that I'll keep using this belt, and hope that I become more adept at stuffing the flask back in the pouch and getting it properly cinched down. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the great channel, Mike.
Love the vaporkrar belt. Use it for 50ks instead of vest along with handheld. I feel like I can run pretty free without a vest. Pinnacle looks nice. Rear pocket is set up better than vaporkrar belt, and bottle having safety was what was needed so leakage doesn't happen.
Brutal. I have the nathan vaporkrar which seems to be the first version of this. I thought the improvements they made (improved rear pouch with the foam backing, pull tab and larger velcro) would make it better but it seems to have gone in the opposite direction. I had the same issue with the bottle falling out but not nearly as bad as you've had (although I run at a slower pace). I've been using a 400ml salomon soft flask instead of the nathan one and I find that one sits in the belt better and doesn't fall out.
Check the Ultimate Directions comfort belt. I ran with 2 500ml (17oz) soft flasks, 6-8 gels, my iphone and some candy for my 50 miler and other long runs over 20. Easy in and out for the flasks, even has some nice stretchy loops for a jacket to be stuffed into if needed. They do stretch out over 2-3 months and bounce a little if you try 2 flasks, but at $25-$30 on Ebay, I bought a couple. Naked is the best IMO, I just had a hard time getting the correct size. RW for the win on that!
I like it! I’ve been looking for something practical when I go on my runs to hold my phone/keys/earbud charging case/mask/osmo action cam and a few dog things because I like to take my little guy out for a run……I don’t think I’ll get or be using the water bottle so thank you for your honest experience with the “belt”
Strange. I have the older version of this belt and have never had issues with the flask coming out. I don't even worry about the Velcro closure (though on mine it's so small it's barely worth anything). My version doesn't have the padding between you and the water flask so maybe that changes how the flask sits in the pouch. It's definitely not easy to put the flask back in the belt while running though... I usually end up slowing down a lot of stopping all together. Did you try to sinch down the side adjustment straps to make sure they're wrapped around the flask and tight? **Edit** so I looked at the product images and it looks like they changed the side adjustment strap design as well. With mine (Vaporkrar belt) it had a stap on the top and bottom that you could tighten and it would hold in the water flask. Seems like this new design ruins it.
Same as Brian -- used the Vaporkrar for 2+ years and no problems with bottles falling out (tho tough to get back in). I would recommend sizing down!!! I'm a 29 inch waist in most jeans but went with the XXS / XS size in Vaporkrar and it keeps the bottle extra snug without too much constriction.
I have it. Ive been disappointed from the start. The Nathan bottle leaked from the word go. I then started to use my Salomon soft bottle but it was too long in the end. Either way i found getting the bottle back in the pocket on the fly pretty much impossible. What Ive decided now is that if I need water on a run i just rather run with my Salomon adv skin 5 with 1 or 2 bottles. I have not found a belt that does a good job or allows to really drink on the go.
This belt would be great without the water bottle pocket in the back. It could have been skinnier in the back with a regular pocket. It just becomes extra fabric in the back. Sucks cause the storage is great around it.
Thanks for the great, honest review! Have you thought about adding a couple magnet to each side of the Velcro? They'd be light weight and potentially prevent the Velcro from coming undone
I had a Naked belt for a while and that thing held a gazillion pounds, but I sold it to a friend as I got the wrong size. The issue these things, which has been moot for you for 5 years or so, is for folks with a belly - does one wear it on the belly or under it? I like the idea of straps to clamp down and grows or shrinks with my stomach.
I was wondering the status of the fountains. Thanks! It’s ridiculous they will be shutoff, but in the same press release the city touts 115 vendors to then purchase beverages from. Outrageous.
they should turn on the water bottle spigot at least. Of course, everyone can just get from the dog water spigot down below. Its the same water, and i do so all the time.
hi Ko- I'm using a Salomon agile 250 set after a long search- I carry an iphone in a case, 2 gels, and 2x250ml flasks very securely- shame about the Nathan belt... Salomon definately worth a look mate- HOOROO BYE BYE NOW!
Man I wish I had watched this prior. I trail run and just bought this two days ago. Ran with it yesterday and hated it. The water bottle retention is junk. The water bottle flopped out before I had made it .25 mile.

Your patience is amazing - after the third time the bottle fell out I would have deposited in the nearest trash can. One to avoid - thank you.
Its absolute junk. I bought mine two days ago with excitement and high hopes. Complete let down

Me too. Using Vaporkrar since years ago. Very well made product.
I tried the first waist pak they made, it wasn’t bad but had issues with the bottle leaking. Now I just use a naked running belt.
I just bought myself the Clifton 8 happy to see you also running in them
