      Bass players and batytone players don't overlap...
      Not the same range, musical scope, not the same tone, not the the same function in a band, not the same playing...
      Kidding apart, you do'nt have to fire your bass player, anyway. Not for that reason.

  • @PatFlanigan
    @PatFlanigan 6 лет назад +88

    Totally agree! I've been playing baritone for a couple years now and strongly encourage every guitar player to get one. Great for stoner rock, metal and sits perfectly between regular guitar and bass!

    • @saam6768
      @saam6768 6 лет назад +2

      This "sitting" is the discussion I want to have. Been totally interested in a Baritone for a while but always worry about how this would work. Do you feel you compose (alto?) guitar parts differently because you have baritone? I feel like the overlap is so huge.

    • @PatFlanigan
      @PatFlanigan 6 лет назад +2

      Saam I don’t really write the songs differently because of it. It all depends on the style and the key of the song I’m writing.
      I use it about 50% of the time in my stoner band. There’s another guitarist playing standard guitar, so that range is also covered. I have an alternative rock band with my brother and there I just use it sometimes to add some balls to certain parts. It’s all about trying things out and seeing if it works for the song.
      The tuning needs a bit of getting used to, but you quickly get the hang of it!

  • @jonathanpascal25
    @jonathanpascal25 6 лет назад +3

    HOLD THE PHONE: get a baritone with a long enough neck "scale length" to accommodate your tuning. I play drop g on a 28" baritone, and the intonation is solid, its amazing to be intune up the whole neck. 27" will" intonate to A, and 27.75" will intonate Ab. Remember, its a solid sound, and boy do you hear it. Using a 7 string will get you there partially. But doesn't have the dense saturated tonal abilities the baritone has naturally. A standard 25.5" scale 7 string will only intonate to A tops in my experience. Now if you want all the range, get a 7 string mutiscale 28"- 26.5" , and youll be able to do drop F#, and keep that high E string. Thats my dream guitar. Ps: everyone needs a subcontra bass guitar. :)

    I am the proud owner of a Yamaha AES520 Drop 6 (baritone guitar) and I can say that baritones are very inspiring guitars and fun to play too. One can also approach a baritone guitar as a 7 string guitar without the high E string.

    B-B is two and a half, not three and a half steps down. Also if you use thick enough strings it won't get floppy, I use 13-62 in a Les Paul and it's just perfect.

      Personal Problems well sure you could but most guitars aren't meant to have that kind of tension of the necks, henceforth why a baritone neck is thicker and wider to accommodate the tension. reason no. 5: The bassist can just put a 5set on his 4 string bass and use that last string to choke anyone who says, or even thinks, that a lower tuned guitar doesn't need bass :D

      @toxotorana 6 лет назад

      Or alternatively, the bassist could get a baritone, tune it down a bit and sack the guitarist.

    7-strings are just baritones with a high E string change my mind

    • @broondjongen
      @broondjongen 4 года назад +1

      The F# on the baritone is tuned up to G on a 7 string.

      Veton Ademaj yes, then they add a high E string

    Nah, just get a Bass VI, then all the same string tuning but an octave lower EADGBE. You don't have to transpose to a different key, and you can hit the bass frequencies of the bass player you just sacked.

    The local GC can't unload those once pricey 7's to save their lives- zero selling points.On the other hand, lucky if there's a single baritone in store.The take away? Lots of people had the same bad idea; want to drop tune? Dan Electro have been making these from the start.
