great point at 5:52 "the minimal mixes that we do are the most used." I've written some big sweeping tracks with 150+ track count in my day, but whenever I've had the fortune of having one of my songs featured in a movie trailer, more often than not it's been a minimalist / simple part of the song that they've featured. good reminder to oneself
If you all haven't heard it yet, Mark Lettieri has two albums where he uses a baritone for funk. They are Deep: The Baritone Sessions and they are so great. This guitar has so much potential and I really hope to see more people using it for different genres.
I had a friend recently point out that these guitars have 500k pots (which are for humbuckers generally). I changed mine out with 250k and tamed the high unusable high end from this guitar.
i tune my baritone electric with 13s, to C standard, I like the extra tension. My acoustic baritone has 16s and is tuned to A standard. All of it is D'Addario, as that is all I can get here in Germany
Soft drums on free Kontakt - yes please! Instant buy. Oh, and the neck should be under the tension of the strings when doing truss rod adjutment. Love your videos Jon - keep em coming.
It is NOT a one-trick pony! I own a '90s Danelectro U2 Baritone (bottle headstock) that I bought from a bassist pal of mine. While working on my Fender Jazz bass over a bottle of wine in his repair shop he offered me it for only $200 in the '90s. What a pal! He had it strung with light bass strings and tuned E to E one-fifth down from a Baritone tuning. It is essentially a 6-string bass, tuned like a guitar, one whole octave down. While performing in a guitar trio, I can comp chords an octave up while the guitarist solos. It made a tone on a solo through my Galien-Krueger MBS150S head (Alesis Wedge Chorus/Delay) into my Aguilar GS112 that made the bass player in my Quartet's eyes pop out of his head. He was stunned by how hip it sounded. I want to buy another one so that I can actually run it like a proper Baritone to record with. The unique build with those lipstick pickups sounds insanely cool. I love the wood bridge on my unit too. My Bass (Baritone) U2 is piano black with white trim and I get countless compliments on its appearance.
Don't fear the truss rod, as long as you go steadily. I've always fancied a Dan Electro 12 string as I find Ricky necks too small, and now I want a Baritone too :)
I love my Dano Bari. Well, I did, until my son borrowed it. Haven't seen it since. To replace it I got the Fender Telecaster Baritone. The neck pickup has that nice lipstick P-up tone, but the bridge has a humbucker which is much less buzzy for high gain metal like tracks. Great demo and video as usual Jon.
Hey John... the book, "How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great!" by Dan Erlewine, is an excellent book for the average guitar player to read and learn how to make the necessary adjustments to their guitar.
I have the Dano Baritone innuendo. Made in Korea it has single coils. The weird onboard effects need to boosted however it does have stereo out. I can't get the action low past the 9 the fret but that's not baritone area anyway. I almost always have the onboard tremelo on and tune it to A to A. Lots of fun to get different sounds. I recommend those Dan innuendos and blasters as they are a great bargain whether Bari or not.
also, NOT a one-trick pony... so many things to do with Bari, one of my favorite studio tools... easy application that works so often is using a Bari to double the bassline, sometimes worth aligning the transients, sometimes better with a bit of rub/blur
baritone guitar, the guitar that makes all other guitars feel like kids toys, baritone is the guitar for big boys and girls who are wanting to make serious music, real music
I play baritones exclusively. Normal guitars don't feel right to me anymore. They are flimsy and have no tonal authority. But when I strum a chord on one of my baritones. Oh boy! These beasts don't even need tons of distortion in order to sound big and heavy.
I’ve noticed that after playing my baritone I play better on my regular guitars when I go back. Same when I play bass. Maybe it’s like a finger workout or something.
It's best to make truss rod adjustments with the strings on and up to tension if possible. Otherwise you could think it looks good with the strings off, only for it to look less good with the strings back on.
Strings are 13-70 had one for two years but I kept trying to bend too many notes. Old tendons hated that so I sold her for what I paid $400. I dug the low grolws especially thru my 64 Vibroverb with 15" JBL
I stopped watching this as soon as you asked to tell you that YES I would buy soft drums in a heartbeat if it were available for the free Kontakt player.
In layman's terms what did you do? Adjust it an octave lower with the truss road? After doing this can you play slide on it or is the action to low? Asking cuz I'm sparkly.
Hey Jon!! Love your videos my friend! Thank you for all the content! :D I would like to ask you, which main camera and lens are you using on these videos? Cheers from Brazil!
can I use your drum samples in Model Samples Electron? Or the OT? Or even the TR6S? because in my daw I already have what I need, but I would really like to have drums like that in my external samplers. Thanks for your video and keep up dude
I've been toying with a baritone for years, jo give me that darker tone and fill the space in my solo gigs a bit more - they just sound so good when they bite in to just a little gain. ATM I drop my tele down 2 steps with gauge 11s, and it get's close to that bariton sound, but just not the same. Anyway, this has wet the whistle, thanks Jon! [and YES to the Kontakt player drums!]
Yes. But I would LOVE to use it without Kontakt, Been recording since the 80's so I guess it's more about the layout and thinking behind Kontakt then me ... I hope ...
I would buy soft drums if it were available for the free kontact player. The reason I haven’t is I can’t justify the cost of kontact full because I wouldn’t use most of it for my music. I would buy SD however because I like you and your channel and the sound of soft drums. “I have almost bought this guitar 57 times” - it’s like you’re inside my brain. Same story here. This may force the issue for me. Great vid.
wow, as a guitar player who's done his own guitar maintenance for 40 years, the first part of that video was a roller coaster of emotions! i love my baritone and i agree, they're well worth the investment. the danos are super cool and the gretsch ones are very nice. i have the prs 277 with p90's and it's a great guitar, especially for those languid melodies with tremolo!
I would buy soft drums if it would be NKS ready (and yep, I know, this is pretty specific but I only use NKS ready stuff, i just LOVE the control I have with my Komplete Kontrol Keyboard and the light guide and everything! [and to be honest: if I buy only NKS ready libraries I limit myself in wasting money 😅]) - but I do understand, that this is pretty niche!
In my defense, the first video I found after searching Dan Electro Truss Rod adjustment involved removing the neck in order to make the adjustment. But you're right, long journey ahead.
I don't also need a danelectro baritone...I don't also need a danelectro baritone...I don't also need a danelectro baritone...I don't also need a danelectro baritone...
Same. Also not me that just looked at them on Reverb 👀
Fender makes a lovely Bass VI.
Just buy a whammy? I also also don’t need a Danelectro baritone .. or a Danelectro 12-string … argh!
Yeah, you need the Danelectro 12 string instead
My inner monologue

Jon, I stopped myself from clicking the like button during the commercials before the video, and I waited until the end of the video, like a good boy.

Will be checking out Mark Lettieri momentarily. Thanks for the pointer. Spot on re baritone for funk. Could be good for electro pop too.
I had a friend recently point out that these guitars have 500k pots (which are for humbuckers generally). I changed mine out with 250k and tamed the high unusable high end from this guitar.

Working on Soft Drums! Thanks, Andrew!
Yes I would definitely buy Soft Drums if it were available for the free Kontakt player👍🏾

Your voice over adlibs - king!
"I'm not sick. I'm just dumb." Love it! 😅 My new favorite line. I'll be pirating that one.
Don't fear the truss rod, as long as you go steadily.

YES to soft drums on free kontakt! thanks for another great video

you like the fender baritone more than the danny?
Jingle bells in September! I'm here for it
Does it Djent
You seem to be doing something different, something good. It turned out I'm happy watching a youtube video in a long time. Thanks mate!
Hey John... the book, "How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great!" by Dan Erlewine, is an excellent book for the average guitar player to read and learn how to make the necessary adjustments to their guitar.
confirmed. Dan Erlewine's books & Stewart MacDonald taught me how to build & set up basses & guitars
Ordered one yesterday. Wish me luck.

"I dont know what Im looking at"
I felt this 100%, same.
THE SINGING. Gonna hire you for my upcoming throwback grunge project! So good. Great, compelling work as always, Jon.
fwiw, I love the faux VO test during production, might add that to my workflow here, great idea
also, NOT a one-trick pony... so many things to do with Bari, one of my favorite studio tools... easy application that works so often is using a Bari to double the bassline, sometimes worth aligning the transients, sometimes better with a bit of rub/blur
❤ great production mate. Look forward to a deep dive into your channel! Kudos and mahalo
Great video! I've been contemplating getting a baritone guitar forever

Strong Jack Black vibes during the mic test voice over! 😂👍
Haha!

Prolly ought to tune it about a half or whole step under standard then, make the rod adjustment.
Pretty cool! I like your setup.
I loved my 56 U2 but the neck broke and I couldn't get a neck separate, I'll buy another one some day!
I stopped watching this as soon as you asked to tell you that YES I would buy soft drums in a heartbeat if it were available for the free Kontakt player.
I have one question…. Is it a comfortable couch guitar?
In layman's terms what did you do? Adjust it an octave lower with the truss road? After doing this can you play slide on it or is the action to low? Asking cuz I'm sparkly.
i laughed out loud at the beginning but…love your content!!
Great vid. Reminded me to pull out my late 90s 56-U2. Been a while. Also… Never wanted a baritone til now. Gee thaaaanks.
I love all things guitar, but honestly I'm more interested in how the box fort turned out.
What!?! I literally just finished my first track last night with the exact same guitar!
Hey Jon!! Love your videos my friend! Thank you for all the content! :D
I would like to ask you, which main camera and lens are you using on these videos?
Cheers from Brazil!
It sounds awesome

Also what gauge strings does ot come with atock 13 to 64 right?
Your half singing / half speaking voice gave some Nick Cave vibes here and there. :)
Dude you are plenty sparkly !!
now you need a fender bassVI !
Yes. But I would LOVE to use it without Kontakt, Been recording since the 80's so I guess it's more about the layout and thinking behind Kontakt then me ... I hope ...
Yes I would buy soft drums! I don't have Kontakt but really want soft drums
"...like I'm in the National" was the winner
Once you sorted the mic your sparkle came back. Baritone guitar great for fun to play funk.
I would for sure buy soft drums for the free Kontakt player!
Love this video man, cracked me up 🤣 (and also made me want a baritone guitar)
I don't wanna buy full Kontakt but if it was available for Kontakt Player I'd 1000000000000000% buy Soft Drums. PLEASE do it!!
@@shaunpocalypse it is now available for Kontakt Player. We upgraded to that functionality last November.
Bought a baritone a few weeks ago and can’t put it down.
I would buy soft drums if it were available for the free kontact player. The reason I haven’t is I can’t justify the cost of kontact full because I wouldn’t use most of it for my music. I would buy SD however because I like you and your channel and the sound of soft drums.

Understood regarding Kontakt. Working on it!
8:34 sounds just like Tenacious D
bravo
I would buy not only Soft Drums, but all the rest of your plugins if they were available for the free Kontakt player
wow, as a guitar player who's done his own guitar maintenance for 40 years, the first part of that video was a roller coaster of emotions! i love my baritone and i agree, they're well worth the investment. the danos are super cool and the gretsch ones are very nice. i have the prs 277 with p90's and it's a great guitar, especially for those languid melodies with tremolo!
Box fort! ❤ cool funny video😅

Tune E to E with 25 to 95 Guage strings, match a LaBella set.
I LOVE your videos, man. They are required viewing.
Did he really not think to look under the truss rod cover for the truss rod? 😮
I know
I would buy ALL of your instruments if they were available for the free Kontakt player.
You took the neck off looking for a truss rod? Oh man lol You have a journey ahead of you....good luck!
In my defense, the first video I found after searching Dan Electro Truss Rod adjustment involved removing the neck in order to make the adjustment. But you're right, long journey ahead.
@@JonMeyer that's funny, I can see why you assume such a thing lol
You don't need to take the neck off of a guitar in oder to do a truss rod adjustment. Ever.
You took the neck off to find the truss rod....... Jesus christ dude.
Annoying
is there much difference between a baritone guitar and a fender bass 6?
