- Searching for Bob "Ninja" Poras on Google won't yield much, but you might be lucky enough to find one image. Bob spent decades in the shadows with the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), also known as Delta Force, Combat Applications Group (CAG), and the CIA. He had a 36-year career as a Federal Government Supervisory Special Agent, U.S. Army Infantryman, and Special Forces Soldier, specializing in combat operations, personnel protection, supervising/leading special mission teams, firearms training, military/paramilitary training, and coaching. Recently, Bob has started a tactics company, teaching a variety of training based on his real-world experiences at the highest level. He emphasizes the importance of mindset, something we often forget. After a life at war, Bob has had to confront the many invisible wounds that are deep within him. We don't always realize the toll it has taken on us until we hang it up, and then we become aware of the damage and everything creeps back in. These wounds are not visible, but they can be felt in conversations, dreams, nightmares, chronic headaches, tendinitis, and other internal injuries that cannot be described. They also carry the loss of their brothers and sisters and try to make sense of the common question: why? Bob reflects on Operation Just Cause, the Benghazi Attacks, the Khost Bombing, and the Tripoli CIA evacuation, among others. In Episode 045 of the Shawn Ryan Show, you can see similarities to the Kyle Morgan episode, where there is distant memory of the fine details and an attempt to unpack what has been pushed away. The Shawn Ryan Show gives you a reality check and a glimpse of what war does to the human body. Our next guest on the Shawn Ryan Show is Bob "Ninja" Poras.

Best way to do it even as a civilian speaking to an officer.. except it works better when you go like this, "how ya doing officer, before we continue on I'd just like to let you know out of professional courtesy I have a loaded firearm(say where weapon is.. on my right hip, glove box etc etc).. let me know how you want to proceed".. oh and both hands on the steering wheel from before he can even see you from his car and until he directs you after you've told him about said weapon.. it's a great way to not get shot, keep the officer at ease(hands on steering wheel), while also letting him know your on his team(that's the, out of professional courtesy, part), also keeps him at ease.. imagine having to be a cop in America where regular people can legally have a 5.56 with a 100 drum, level IV vest/plates etc etc.. that's got to be nerve racking.. not too mention a lot of gangbangers have smartened up about their choice of weapons.. they're all using hi cap mags, "switches" on their Glocks, green tips for their 5.56's and run away choppers.. I really don't even like police though, I just don't wanna get shot because some idiot is under trained, nervous and or looking to use his service weapon for the first time..

When i first got to the fleet i was FAPd to military police because they were understaffed. One day i was working the gate and a few SUVs pull up with the darkest tinted windows I'd ever seen. The driver rolls the window down maybe 2 inches, just enough to fit a badge through. We never had someone show us a badge, it was always CAC cards that we scanned. I asked him to roll the window down and asked if he had a CAC card. He said "i can't do that" then just tapped his finger on his badge twice. I lean in close and i tried to grab it from him and he pulled it back through the vehicle and said "i cant let you have that." He put it back through the window for me to see it, i take a look and its a secret service badge. While I'm leaned in i also had the opportunity to take a look through the small opening in the window. I look in the back and sure enough its a bunch of guys in suits and all of them were holding ARs/SMGs, i couldn't really tell, it was a quick peak lol. I radioed it in asking if we were expecting secret service and yeah, apparently Trump was visiting our base and no one told us. It all checked out but the sketchiness of that situation could've easily been avoided with a little communication lol.
Sounds like bullshit. If a president is going anywhere you are you will definitely know beforehand.

I was running a clinic in Iraq in 2007. A bunch of civilian dressed dudes come in and say they need flu shots- now, we had to record everything by this point, so a junior medic was trying to get their IDs for shot records/clinic records, so we didn't get reamed out by command.
Dudes just laughed at him. I tried to explain the situation, they laughed at me. The doctor on duty came out, spoke with them for a minute, and then took us all aside.

Best moments I’ve ever had in the military was providing airstrip security for SEAL Team 3 in Iraq in early 2017.
I was the vehicle commander for our humvee. As soon as the bird touched the ground, a few dudes in board shorts, work out tees and combat kits got out and one of them came over to my truck and got in. My buddy (240 gunner up in the turret) looked at the dude and said, “who the fk are you?” The guy answered, “I’m one of the SEALs that landed.” Without a hint of sarcasm, my buddy said, “Idc if you’re the president of the United States, gtfo of my humvee.”
We later became more friendly with those guys, but it was a spicy beginning.

Best quote from "Super Troopers"!!!
My checkpoint of 11b guys “I was their medic” had a SUV full of seals come ripping in the wrong way “exit” to our checkpoint. They drove the wrong way over the tire rippers past the signs saying past this point we will kill you. 10 guys come running out MG in tower draws a bead they are screaming American American pointing to their flags. A very bad mistake was avoided that day no loss of life but honestly the mistake was the seals and our guys not opening up on them. They got that Suv close enough to our CP to completely turn it into a crater which is exactly what happened to the last CP on that checkpoint on the 14th of July bridge right before we took over a car bomb turned it into a crater about 5 meters in front of where our CP was set up. I would have been killed in the blast because I was in the CP. we are very lucky it was seals in a hurry and not a suicide bomber by the time people saw the flags and heard English it was way too late I am shocked the terrorists didn’t use those tactics to their advantage more. They could have targeted checkpoints without a attack for awhile and put a few American uniforms on them acting confused and boom boom unimpeded access to the base/ zone.
Thats wild, Doc. Thanks for your service,
I have got to be honest that is the shit that gives team guys a shit reputation. First you got lt baby face butter bar walking around in his pt reflective belt and a clipboard thinking he is the hands in pocket, grooming standard hall monitor, then you have major I couldn't cut it in jump school so I am going to call out every team guy and harass him because he couldn't do so no one will (he's the type of officer who makes it through the ranks and ultimately makes his first decision of power to take the black beret from men who could make it and give it to average Joe) then you have a team guy that takes a couple legs outside the wire in one of the up armored four runners and shoots up one of the locals cars and what do the team guys do? Have him removed busted in rank and send him to the state to answer for his crimes then buy the guy a vehicle and help the family out anyway we could ...do you think ass 1 or 2 wanted any part of that hell no.. but that's the kinda team guy that does stupid shit that puts all involved in a bad situation...

I was working for a government contractor in the late 1980’s, we were in the main terminal at Andrews Air Force base and a couple coworkers and I were with our boss who was talking to the Colonel that ran the base. As we were standing there a huge beast of a man came marching through the terminal the crowd of people spread out like fish in front of a shark. He was carrying two huge bags in each hand, I’ve never seen such corded muscle on a human being. He was wearing civilian clothes, jeans and a tee shirt and had long black hair. My boss cajoled the Colonel into telling us what’s this guy’s story? He said I shouldn’t be telling you but he’s Delta Force. I doubt they’re all as big and bad looking as this dude was. I was a big fan of the Conan the Barbarian and read all the books. He looked like Conan in the flesh right down to the look in his eyes that said yes I’ve killed people, some with my bare hands. I’m just glad he was on our side.
Back in the day, airplanes had stairs down from the tail. Your story about the bags reminded me that a friend would often climb those stairs with others after the passengers had all boarded into the plane. There's a reason why the flight attendants wouldn't allow passengers to go past the curtain. 😊
This is one of my Dad’s stories and his name is Walter Weed. His version of the story was that it wasn’t planned for everyone to point their guns at him. He said it was a tense moment and he was afraid of accidental friendly fire so why he made sure flag patch clearly exposed and pointed gun because if someone was gonna die it wasn’t gonna be him. He said he didn’t realize everyone was pointing their guns until he realized one was over his shoulder. Can’t remember exactly what he said but it was something like “you’re interfering with our mission back off” lol my dad enlisted into the Navy though and told me he wasn’t a SEAL but at his funeral they presented 2 flags and the guy presenting the flags was a Navy SEAL. I still have no answers to why but hearing his story from another POV makes me question things even more. I also saw a young Mike Glover in real life because I had the honor of seeing “Black Hawk Down” in theaters 2 weeks before it was released to the public at the Eisenhower movie theater in Savannah GA. I was playing an arcade shooter and he says to me “You should join the Army so you can do that for real”. I remember that all these years later because walking out of the theater in silence to the sound of mourning is something I’ll never forget. Before driving home my dad turned around and said “if you’re too afraid to be one of these guys then you need to be brave enough to support them.” I love your podcast because you and everyone on here reminds me of him. Same guy different uniform.

Like the real life winter soldier squad. Remember how there was sum like 6 more winter soldiers that were frozen. Those mfs are real life winter soldiers
Delta are the best of the best. My Grandfather was a 82nd airborne Sargent Major, fought in Vietnam. He told me they are the hardest guys, but you can't tell they are in the Army at all. They all look like civilians
I spent 26 years in the Army and retired in 2018 at 45. I do not look the part, nor speak of any “adventures.”
This was one of my favourite interviews and guests by far.
I did Panama Christmas 1989 some best times I had they hated us back at Bragg after that but it only lasted 10 month an I was in the Desert an everyone had a patch on their right shoulder. March 92 I was Gang banging in L.A. with M16 but no body wanted to Rock. Then it was several years Mexican boarder wall. I had good 14 year run , now lookin to be great grandpa soon.
God Bless Y'all!
The highlight of TF Gator 5th ID of Ft Polk’s careers was as the QRF during Acid Gambit the rescue of Delta when the little bird went down. Delta hopped on the M113’s and everyone was high on adrenaline during the ride back to base except for the fact we lost two of our brothers in the fight that day. My friend Cpl Ivan M Perez and PVT 2 Ken Scott. RIP 🙏🏼🫡
Another story that has been overshadowed and lost due to the glamour of Acid Gambit and Kurt Muse rescue was the CAS AC130 friendly fire strafing incident during the raid of Comandancia which served as the distraction for the prison break and hostage rescue.
Funny story the guy in the DEA jacket is Rene De La Cova who was in Panama on a DEA plane to buy shrimp, yes shrimp. They called him and told him to jump in on the arrest. He and his wife also an agent were later arrested in Florida during their money laundering operation. They we’re working both sides of the fence. Setting up Narco traffickers and laundering for them. The old days
My dude was the breacher at Cárcel Modelo where they got Muse back. He was also on that mini-bird when it hit the street.
my Uncle was recently inducted into the Ranger HoF, when he was with Delta, he took Noriega's cigar box from his office during the raid lol.
🧢
That didnt happen
I thought Noriega was their buddy
I met a cocaine smuggler that knew Noriega personally, I called bullshit he goes in the other room and comes back with two 1911 pistols framed in a wall hanging box gold plated and engraved " to my good friend _____" blah blah blah Manuel Noriega. I was put in my place. Turns out he had an airstrip that smugglers used before coming into the us and Noriega made tons of cash letting them use it. Sad enough 25 years later the friend of mine didn't have alot of money or even an airplane anymore, and a few years later his daughters boyfriend stole the pistols and pawned them so they could buy drugs, the circle is completed .
@@howardsmith9417 He should kill the boyfriend. I would.
I met a Sergeant Major Delta Force in Alaska 1987. I was US Coast Guard at the time and former Army. He wore blue jeans with an Army field jacket. The man had every kind of badge you could earn. I was in total awe. Delta was on the hunt for Soviet divers.
This was a great show.
1 of the best in my opinion
Always the best thing to do there, go through the motions like it's an empty van. Never know who's watching...
I'm air force. I was on the flightline at an ECP at Bagram when Obama made his first visit to Afghanistan as President. it was late at night, probably 9pm. same thing happened to me. Master Chief popped out of the van. Said the same thing. guys with guns in the back, who are gonna set up inside. door slides back, I see civies, beards and guns. Master Chief says "say hi". I nod, they drive in. I see them set up a few different places. Van comes back, Master Chief says he'll be back shortly. I get relieved. back to my B Hut. Flightline got mortared within the hour of Air Force One departing.
nice halo game references bruh
We were running a checkpoint during training in basic and our commander rolled up with his hat on backwards. They started checking under his vehicle and all that and then he hops out and starts firing blanks into our guys at the checkpoint. It was the most hilarious shit cause this dude had been drilling us like a drill sgt just hours prior looking like the most squared away dude possible. He was a first lieutenant.
I remember in Afghanistan '11, waiting at the heliport in Bastion to board a chinook out to our AO. Group of jazzy looking dudes with C8's hopped off a helo. Had 4 or 5 "prisoners" with them, wrists zipped, bags on head. All jumped into the back of a white toyota pickup and drove of.
No idea who they were, but they definitely looked special 😂
Likely JTF2. Canadian SF.
My platoon had gate detail one week and my boy a PFC at the time was in charge of asking how many vics, pax, etc when delta guys rolled out. They simply said “Fuck you”
And my boy said “have a nice day” knowing they were legit. 😂
“Yeah let’s point our weapons at our fellow Americans and hope they see the flags on our uniforms before they freak out. Great idea”
better they shoot him in a freak out then he shoot them in a freak out.
I used to bartend at this little mini resort in Bocas del Toro Panama. And about a half mile walk down the jungle path, and it would open up to an abandoned complex that had a runway and a mansion and all this other crazy stuff.
Turns out it was one of many of Manuel Noriega‘s. Houses that he would use not only as a getaway, but also for Pablo, Escobar’s planes full of cocaine to land.
It's a panel van, can't see anything in the back. Shows picture of the opposite type of van full of windows. A panel can only has front windows, the back window are just metal
I was in some shitty COP name Mudaisis or sounded like such overnight on a convoy and 4 guys dressed in civilians with long bears in a Toyota type 4x4 came in grabbed whatever they wanted and drove off in the middle of the nite just 4 of them with AKs no armor nothing lights off I heard they were CIA others said they were deltas either way those guys had balls of steals 👀
The triple tap thing came on as a suggestion from Andrej.
It was depending on the type of gun / bullet that was being used.
The purpose was that you want people to stop when you shoot them. A lot of guns/bullets will leave the person standing for a while if they go down at all.
Sometimes you want a gun that won't shoot through people and you want to spread out your shots so they don't create through shots as you could be in a crowd etc where you might hit unintended targets.
Head shots will leave them standing as do heart shots. Sometimes it takes a few. It isn't like the movies.
And that is why we Veteran Fathers raise our kids with good manners. You never know who you will run into.
'The number you have dialed is not in service... Please try again...' 😅
I think I once met a delta force guy... but for the life of me, every time I try to remember his face all I get is REDACTED.
Not often the normal foot soldier gets face to face, with the elite like that 😅👌
Cool encounter though .. probably tense AF
“We’re going to need to take y’all into custody”
-Said the line infantry commander to the spec ops dudes
I bet the driver told the guys whatever you see him do, DONT KILL HIM!
Delta are brutal much love and respect from England 🏴 glad we brothers
Great stories! 👍
That photo wasn’t a “panel van”…PV’s don’t have any windows in the cargo area.
Reminds me of the time we were on our way to the range and I was driving our van with tint when some dude pulls up and started raging because I cut him off. The guys popped those two side doors open on the side and hilarity ensued. If you see tinted windows on a passenger van chances are there is plenty of smoke inside
“Well, have a nice day guys! I never saw you and this never happened!” Closes door
I was there. Left FBNC on 19 Dec 89.
I was working at a hotel doing the night shift when I had a guy from Navy Special Weapons come in. He's was the loudest most biggest asshole I have ever met, and I absolutely loved him. His every word was a shout, and he had no problem showing his racism. He was a straight up Patriot, which means he was a straight up asshole. Definitely the guy I want in my corner.
When we got to talking about his service, I somewhat impressed him with a little know-how that most civies don't get. NavSpecWep, 12 Seal teams, Training regime and whatnot, just stuff I picked up from reading or having a general interest in Military.
Well! He decides that I'm cool enough to show his rifle to! So he goes to his truck and pulls out the fully kitted M4 assault rifle. Scope, flashlight, infra-red laser, front grip, black coated, loaded with hp, the whole she-bang. As we're standing in the lobby, handling this monster piece of hardware, we suddenly realize that having this equipment in the open in civilian life, is a big fucking no-no. So we split ways and I left work without ever seeing him again.
Special Forces guys are fucking special. I love them with all of my heart. Even if they are occasionally loud mouth, racist, show off, sons of bitchs.
Just another poor, sad, lonely loser who took the road he so chose to feel better about himself. All he saw was a glimpse of his true self in you. Which is cool. Poor dude.
Most backhanded complement ever devil.
Ok... Well you gentlemen have a good day alright.. *closes door*
When the branches deliberately select a handful of their own personnel to handle a specific operation, they didn’t gamble or lower their standards to accommodate or make exceptions for those with disadvantages, or handicaps, they required those that excel above and beyond the military’s required standards, and then raised them until all they had left was the number of personnel they were seeking. Of course you’re going to be facing the business end of their hardware.
Definitely the funniest episode yet. Plenty of wheezing laughs from both guys.
Now that's a flex.
Delta was not gonna come friendly.
They knew they were Americans.
Who's gun is bigger mentality. Lol.
Sounds like me and my family driving downtown Panama running into protesters in a narrow one way street with AK's pointed down the hood of our car . Threw it in reverse when they started coming toward us , slung that sucker around and got the fuck out of there 🇵🇦
Slides open the panel door: “Yep, looks like none of my business”😅
That photo is so Fing legendary … studied it 1000s of times
December 1989, Camp Shelby Mississippi demo range. Ask your Delta Force buds about the fun filled 3 days and what happened….if they can.
I was at Camp shelby as well but I was there in 06
As an 11B working ECP, I wouldn't had them open up, there's a proper way to handle SF ops. Reason for this security reason. Never know who's watching high value ops. Never give away Positions. I would have radio top. Let them know how many Head count, there reason for Visit, check ID. Nothing else. Quick Quite and fast.
If someone is watching, they expect guards to pop the back doors. Not doing so is what would look suspicious. Maybe just don't open the doors all of the way open, so no onlookers can see inside.
@Elizabeth Bottroff in a combat environment, there are always people watching, your not supposed to open doors at all if it's are own guys. We're trained to do stuff so enemies don't know, we never do the same thing twice that leaves a pattern. Unless you have ran a sec, op then you would know what to do.
My dad spotted some nzsas pretending to be builders once, he spotted them at the pub later and gave them shit and asked how there hole digging went. For context my dad was in the army band and had recognised them even in disguise.
I remember running into a few Delta guys in my time. If I hadn't of seen them where I did, I would have never of guessed...
The pic with the man's face black bared was my instructor in JROTC. Amazing man.
Delta is made up of members of all services who are special operators. They are picked for certain missions.
