  • I finally have the Stepper Online closed loop steppers working. I perform a little stepper feedback test and finalize the wiring, for now... These things are SWEET!

You have been my motivation... please how can I wire 4 axis closed loop system

Everyone's setup is a little different. The closed loop steppers and drivers I linked in the description of this video have wiring diagrams in the user manual pdf. From there it is up to you to integrate them with a controller.

Have you got any experience with the G540 Geckodrive ? What would you recommend for a stable system Geckodrive or chinese closed loop kits ? I am about to make an upgrade and it's hard to take decision.
    Thank you.

Sorry, I don't really know anything about the Geckodrives. The main reason I went for closed loop was because I was having so much trouble keeping the Z axis ballscrew free from shavings. Overall stability was always fine even with the longs motor eBay open loop setup. My problem was that after a while the mill would miss steps in the positive Z direction and then plunge too far in the -Z direction. The closed loop setup at least faults out before anything is damaged.

What inches per second are you actually running? I know its a mill so you probably aren't worried about it being to fast. But I was wondering if there nema 34 12nm setup would work well for a plasma needing to run 300-500 inches per minute for thin flat steel. I am running ball screws at 5.09 inches per second in my setup at the moment.

Mine wasn't very fast. If I recall correctly it was well under 100 IPM. I just looked at the stepperonline website and saw a torque curve on a nema 34 12nm closed loop stepper motor that went up to 1200 RPM. It's not making much torque at that rpm but may be enough to move the plasma torch. Linear speeds will depend on ballscrew pitch and torque required to overcome inertia and friction.

Ya why didn't you use a roller in the first place lol

Does the stepper enclosure is metal ? Also those stepper and encoder cable are they to ?
Just asking because EMI protection is a very important subject for a reliable machine when you have a vfd with multiple kilowatt spindle need by !
    EDIT :

The 1.7m encoder cable often find in kits make no mention of any shielding but the 1.5m version say it's shielded and the shielding wire is the black one. So far so good the 1.7m version seems to also have a black wire.
No mention on the GX16 motor cable, I don't if that can be a problem but you can't overprotect your cnc from EMI generating source or EMI sensitive signal.
Can you complete my research ?

I just used regular stranded wire and haven't had any issues. The tray the mill is sitting on is metal, but the plate the steppers are screwed to is wood. I agree that it's a good idea to use the shielded cable, I just haven't had the issue.
