I agree. I thought it was gonna be something boring, but Dr. Yeo was very interesting. It was a bit annoying towards the end though, where it seemed they couldn't understand the difference between processed and ULTRA-processed foods. I almost felt sorry for the Doctor.

I love Dr. Giles Yeo. I first watched him last time you had him on and he is so interesting. He explains it so well and I am definitely staying away from chicken nuggets. Specific dynamic action of protein. Not new at all, learned it in school, 1982. So, while the accuracy of the labels may not be exactly correct (btw, what's the stats on how many people on low calorie diets, cheat?), but it's still a great guide to know how much you are eating. It's still calories in and calories out. I think that EVERYONE who is having problems with their weight, should count calories at least ONCE is their life .... preferable the first time. It is such an eye opener for people to understand that it's the dressing, not the salad, what a "portion" of steak/meat or cereal looks like, how many miles you have to walk to burn off a Snickers ....... just for instance. Just once in their LIFE to see how little 2500 calories of food/day actually is !! You are not a clinician, big difference. What you are saying here is that people can cheat their diet a little more because of the extra protein metabolism. Fine. Still have to count calories ... and I get their may be some better strategies knowing this information. What you are doing, however, is giving people a source of confirmation bias, imho. Btw, you are a fabulous speaker and teacher, very fun to watch, too.

So you essentially counted the same thing twice. Modern food labels figure calories by taking the number of grams of protein, fat and carbs, times constant for each, add them together and print it on the label. So calories on the label isn't even the amount of heat energy in a food anymore, which wasn't really a measurement of nutrition in the first place.
He’s absolutely right. An 1800 cal diet of pure garbage food is totally different than 1800 cal of healthy high protein foods. Same amount of calories drastically different outcome.
With respect to the good doctor, if I don't track calories, my diet goes to shit very quickly. Counting calories while on a calorie deficit is essential to a deficit being successful.
keep a food diary so you can track if you ate bad food too often . Learn to trust your appetite. When you are tracking calories you are paying attention to what you eat which is what is actually helping you.

You can count calories obsessively and end up metabolically obese even if you're of normal to low weight - the infamous TOFI phenotype. You could still end up with high blood pressure, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. Dr. Yeo used the example of 100 calories of potato chips versus 100 calories of apple. He also constantly speaks of portion control. He's definitely not saying that it's okay for people to throw self-control to the winds and gorge!
its strange how simplistic some people view nutrition, yes if you eat less calories and control them you lose weight, because youre eating less food, the point here isnt that you can eat what you want and lose weight, but the importance of the food its self and how it can aid you in weight loss, example being protein calories are calculated correctly, carbs come with fiber which are more satiating, ultra processed foods strip essential nutrients/ protein or carbs and make us more hungrier. if you were to force feed someone just sugar, or oil and control a calorie deficit they'd lose weight ofc, but thats not how humans work, and requires a more nuanced approach, this is exactly why when people ''count their calories'' it works yet they either regain all the weight loss, or cheat on their diet plan.

After a cleanse like this, it is much easier to understand what the you need of nutrition. The body sends out much clearer signals for what it needs afterwards a good cleanse. Listen closely what you crave. 3. Have fun "talking" with your body and tell yourself that you look amazing, beautiful, accept and love what you see in the mirror, now. HIGH FIVE yourself everytime you pass a mirror 😘 Living here and now, in the present without stressing about your looks - if it concerns how you used to look, or how you want to look. Processed food is anything that has undergone processing. Meat, pasta, dairy, cold cuts, fruit juice, and so on. If it's been in a processing plant before packaging, then it's a processed food. And that's why telling people to "avoid processed food" is nonsense. Furthermore, you cannot "cleanse" your body by any external means. The human body is equipped with a renal system and a liver, which does it for you. While true that cutting out crap like fast food and sweets will do good stuff for you feeling better, you cannot cleanse your body by just excluding certain types of food. That's bollocks on par with organic food being better for you.

This right here is the main problem with the media, they are so eager to lump everything down into one little catchphrase that they can use as a headline. They end up missing the gestalt. I lost 50 pounds counting calories, and this guy is basically saying to eat minimally processed, low calorie density food, listen to any other flexible dieting person and they will tell you the same. Sure CICO doesn’t mean you should eat crap all the time, it just means that if you fill up on unprocessed food, and then decide every now and again to have some thing that is higher calorie density, counting calories, may be a useful tool to make sure that you are staying within your calorie budget. The media coming up with these “catchphrases” is EXACTLY what perpetuates problems by selling an incomplete picture. This guy is not completely unreasonable but presents things in a way which will lead people astray. Intaking less energy (or calories) than you expend is ABSOLUTELY the ONLY determinant of weight loss or gain. That is a law of thermodynamics. So whilst its true that calories have some error- the errors are not generally speaking huge; and they will be distributed in such a way that over time they will roughly balance each other out. So they are actually a VERY GOOD measure of the amount of energy you are intaking from food if you apply it consistently. This is simply a fact. However, he makes a reasonable point about what the best method may be in practice to try and lose weight. Whilst the goal never changes- intake less energy (or calories) than you expend- simply focussing on counting calories often isn't the best way to achieve that goal. Unless you eat foods that satisfy you properly- over time it may be difficult to stick to the calorie restriction. Equally, if you target certain foods you will naturally end up in a calorie deficit without counting if you just eat until you feel full- this is what the keto diet achieves for many people. In short: calories and calorie deficits are essentially a scientifically factual requirement for weight loss. But, to achieve the practical goal of being in a calorie deficit- just focussing on counting calories may not be the best strategy.
Yep you’ve got it and that is exactly what he is saying in his book , but also you need to consider the food that makes you feel fuller for longer and this is what has a huge impact on whether you can cope with a calorie deficit . Feeling hungry can be combated with eating higher protein or higher fibre food and yet those critical factors are not in the calorie count. Lack of fibre in ultra processed foods and lack contribute to the obesity problem
Propreitatory plant based hugely questionable. Eat real food. I have a genetic condition. Processed food especially w folic acid or soy make me very ill. Enrich food with love. Organic if possible. Carbs challenges. I eat high fiber lentil noodles and chill before adding to my meals. @Luca M this is outdated info, it is much too complex for me to explain here. But actually a carnivore has less chance of heart disease in the long run.
That's why the Atkins diet worked, even though it isn't healthy because it is not sustainable in time, so when you stop dieting your body will store carbs like mad, just in case... it is the yo-yo effect. You end up gaining more weight than what you lost.
