    People tend to have this narrative that a Black woman has to prove that she loves herself by wearing her hair in an afro. "Wow she wore her natural hair to her wedding." or "Wow, she wore her natural hair for graduation pictures." My Motto is: "If you love it ! Wear it !"

      I've been relaxing my hair since I was 16 years old. When I turned 49, I noticed my hair was starting to thin out on top. I've always had extremely thick and dense hair, so this scared me, at first I thought maybe it was hormones.....I decided to chop it off and go natural. I'm 52 now and the thickness is back, it grows much faster and healthier. I , personally, would never go back to relaxing my hair.

    You very eloquently expressed the pros and cons of both natural and relaxed hair. THANK YOU! When I was relaxed I had short damaged hair. I’ve been natural for over a decade and my hair has thrived. I’ve heard the exact opposite from others. You have to do what’s best for you. For me, once I learned what my hair likes, natural hair is easy. Wash day is only 2.5 hours and doesn’t take all day. I do my hair once every 1.5-2 weeks and leave it alone. It stays moisturized and healthy. I hate that our community is natural vs relaxed. There is beauty in both. What’s most important is health. Some of my favorite RUclipsrs are relaxed and we all can learn from each other.

For me it was hard to manage, and eventually it became extremely unhealthy. This caused my hair not to grow and stay shoulder length for 5 years. After relaxing my hair it has been super healthy. LIMIT heat i only used hair dryers right after a touch up. Every 12wks
      Protective styling (buns) and natural oils and creams KEEP length and limits scissors.

    I texlaxed my hair yesterday! 😫
    I’m no longer natural and my hair looks so good!!!
    I let it air dry and I put some product in it and it looks really pretty.
    I decided to texlax because I didn’t want to lose my curls but I wanted manageability. I can’t go more than 4 days without washing my hair and as it gets longer it’s very time consuming to do every few days. I used a mild relaxer. I’m going to try to keep heat off of my hair and deep condition once a week.
    Like you, natural hair to me, is hair that grows out of your head and it isn’t a weave or a wig. Natural hair can be chemically treated (relaxed, permed, colored). As long as it’s growing out of your scalp, it’s natural.

    • @kayade5305
      @kayade5305 2 года назад +4

      @Allurah You're right. That was the definition of natural hair for all these years. Natural hair for every human, even when they get a chemical process, still means hair that grows out of your head. Then along came the natural hair nazis within the Black community and they changed it to mean whatever suits their ego.
      As someone with unprocessed hair, it's annoying to see self-proclaimed naturals being abusive to other self-proclaimed naturals and duking it out on social media platforms, all because one natural who colored their hair and still has 4c coils 'dared to call herself natural'. Grown ups losing their minds over hair styles, as if there aren't other issues to be prioritised. SMH.

    • @chantellify
      @chantellify 2 года назад +3

      @Trinity M Read my second sentence. I’m not claiming to be natural nor do I care about the natural community. I like the videos on how to care for natural hair but at the end of the day, I do what I want to do. I don’t have time living up to the expectations or standards of others. I went natural because I thought it would be healthier. However, based on my experience and my own personal philosophy on the matter, healthy hair depends on how well it is cared for, whether chemically treated or natural and without chemical treatment.

    I was natural three times over the past ten years and hated it every time. I just thought I Had to be natural because everyone else was. I would heat train and fail, tried keratin treatment at home- rubbish. but going back to relaxers was awesome this 4th time around- and I finally realized this is how I like my hair 😄

      I tried so many times to transition from relaxers back to natural, rightnow it’s going on about a year and a half since my last relaxer, but I noticed my hair sheds a lot during this transition. But when am relaxed my hair seem more healthier and grow longer. So back to getting a relaxer.

      I’ve had success either way. Both natural and relaxed. I do understand feeling like you have to do it cause everyone else goes. It’s a huge commitment with tons of work that I just don’t feel like doing, so I decided to relax. I still enjoy braid outs and twist outs and etc. so I definitely embrace a textured look, it’s just more manageable.

    Yes you kept it so real in this video! I loved the points about how much time we spend on our hair and letting it get in the way of living. We all don't have all day to do our hair, I am relaxed now and spend 3 hours on wash day. Even that some days I don't want to do so being natural is not for me either at this point in life. I also appreciate that you did not diminish natural hair, it just as beautiful. I love all black hair but we have so many options, all women should do what works for them without judgment

    Hi Dom. I just turned 68 today. Don't look it one bit (wow). My hair is natural. When stretcher out, it is just below bra strap length. My hair strands are thinned from years of medication (hbp). All and all there is quite a bit of density. Since it is very fine It is a tangled mess when washed. The shrinkage is real. I used to do relaxes when my stands were much thicker. I have also decided not to color it any more. Its like I don't need excess chemicals absorbed in my scalp. Great vid. 💝

    Hmmm, this is one thing I love about relaxed ladies. No insulting naturalistas. Keep it up Dom, doing a great job. I honestly don't understand why someone will tell you natural hair is best for me or that relaxed hair is best for me. Let me make the choice myself. But no, all I see is naturalistas trying to force it on everyone, even to the point of using such horrible words. I am glad you made this video to prepare those who will like to have their hair relaxed after being natural for a while. I went natural for about 3 years before I relaxed my hair again. This was because wash days days were a nightmare. It was so draining. I relaxed again in 2018 and have been relaxed since then.

    I am natural and i love it. But i am glad someone eventually made this video.
    There are a lot of unnecessary pressure in the black hair community on people going natural. It makes sense that we are trying to preserve our heritage and embrace ourselves but what if you cannot handle the stress, pain and devotion that comes with it? Then you get painted as the black sheep and say you hate yourself. I love every bit of this video and i hope other people that are struggling with being natural but are scared of societal critics get to make peace with themselves and learn that your hair doesn't define you.

    I just relaxed my hair for the first time in 10 years to combat breakage. My hair was breaking excessively and it wasn't due to diet, hormones, heat, chemicals, weaves and over manipulation. The breakage was due to knotting that naturally occurs in kinky hair. Examination of my hair revealed multiple tiny knots at breakage points. I figured get rid of the knots, get rid of the breakage. I'm not kidding when I say, that after perming my hair the breakage immediately stopped. My hair is more manageable, more receptive to moisture and shinier. I used ORS perm making sure to follow the instructions. Often times when perming goes wrong, people fail to simply follow the instructions. I'm very satisfied with my results and will continue to perm my hair in the future.

    My husband was begging me to go blonde. I am no way close to being blonde. I am olive tone, with curly brown hair, and facial features (nose, lips, eyes) that do not resemble Anglo Saxonism. I gave in and bleached my hair (I spoke to a great hair dresser and she refused to bleach my hair) I bleached my hair in another country. My hair was so tangled and dry that I fought with my husband. Never again, I love everything about myself. If he wants a blonde then he should go to Sweden and get him a wife there.

    So giving you a virtual standing ovation! You are spitting the facts as we used to say back in the day! Confidence is key, no matter how you do your hair, if you don't own the look it will own you and nobody has time for that. Knowledge or at least access to a person with knowledge will be essential. RUclips is a great resource just don't try all you see, do a bit more research and buy quality over quantity. To paraphrase Lizzo and T Swift Haters gonna do what they do, hate. Take heed of my boy JZ and just dust that sh#% off your shoulder. You look great so of course you must hate yourself! LMAO isn't it funny how that works. My confidence at 46, okay 45 and 10 months is higher than it was at 25. My relaxed hair is longer and healthier than ever, still have my 6-pack abs, my skin is on point and I have to coin to dress my ass off! I know what works for me and everyday I walk every inch of my 6ft body like I am back on the runway!

    Sometime last year, I attempted to transition to natural. I was 15 months into it. Literally my hair was half curls and half straight. I loved the way my curls felt and looked....when wet.
    But once it dried, nope! Tangles and frizz galore! None of the products I tried moisturized my hair. I was spending too much money, lol.
    More importantly, my self esteem was so low. I had so many bad hair days and I didn't feel pretty at all. I looked and felt so unkempt.
    My hair is healthiest and most manageable when relaxed. Thank you so much Dom for your wisdom! 💖

    I stopped relaxing my hair because it made me feel as though I was appropriating. I never want to give anyone the impression that I hate myself or that I want to be something other than a black woman. I love being black and I feel that people respect the fact that I accept and feel comfortable with myself. I appreciate that everyone has a choice and many chose to relax and silk press. I am most comfortable with how my hair feels in its natural form when it grows out of my scalp. The people who are offended by my natural hair is always other black women. Bottom line we have to do what makes us feel whole and complete no matter what others think.

However I have found that others want me to have relaxed hair and get so up set with me to the point were they don't want to be seen with me. I even had a stylist lie to me about getting a keratin treatment and saying it's not a chemical but a protein treat and it would make my hair more manageable. She even went as far as to set up me an appointment and said she would cut my hair in a style I didn't want. We all should have a choice on what makes us happy.

Wash, deep condition, blow-dry and flat iron takes a couple of hours. You made an excellent point, I could never understand the point of people wearing their hair natural if it was always covered by wigs/weaves/clip-ins either...like what's the point? If your covering it constantly then you don't want to wear it and that's okay but why keep it natural in the first place? Your hair looks beautiful girl!

I’ve literally had customers ask me if my hair was electrocuted, I’ve had some customers compliment my hair, and I’ve had some customers try to touch my hair. Currently my hair is not relaxed, it is naturally kinky curly, and I think it’s beautiful because that’s what naturally grows out of my head. With customers being so “bold” it’s definitely taught me to rethink how I see myself. And at the end of the day I tell myself, “Joy whether they like it or not, you do, and you’re gorgeous so they can just deal with it” #Periodt

The main thing I hear is "you're trying to be white straightening your hair like theirs". No, I'm relaxed because it's convenient to maintain my hair. I was relaxed for the 1st 13 years of my life and when I got my 1st relaxer I did not look back. I had setbacks just like anyone else but I cut it off and kept it moving and learned how to take care of it better. I have seen natural sistas with setbacks too. It's so hard to find products that don't have those ingredients in them. So today I tex-laxed my hair. It's more manageable and instead of the tight tangled coils it's wavy. I didn't have to fight with it, and I feel better about it. So, if someone wants to relax but not fully go straight they can try that.

    Hi Dominque in less than a week, you are the second person encouraging me to relax my hair. I have been natural for 9 years, cut it 4 years ago due to being frustrated and tired. My hair has grown back to that length I was struggling with and I decided to heat train it last year, because at that point I was over it. I love my natural hair but it is way too much. I don’t even mind dealing with the struggles but my hair does not even allow me to win in detangling, styling etc. Everything is a struggle and I never win. I literally spent the weekend washing, blow drying and straightening my hair and I still can’t easily comb my hair. It’s crazy. So I’m done. I have been watching ladies who are texlaxed and relaxed since then. I am done and over this. I can’t do the things I want to do in my life if I have to dedicate so much time to my hair in order to look decent. Smh

      I don't understand this term that natural hair ladies use when they say "heat train"...you are damaging and frying your hair with heat, therefore you're not natural anymore. Your hair will be so much more healthier with a mild relaxer than "heat training" your hair.

My concern is a connection between the chemicals used and the fibroid development. I have read that the chemicals used for relaxing are dangerous to our health in other ways as well. Since I have been natural my hair has grown like crazy. It takes me an hour to wash and style (my hair is past my shoulders). Wash day is not a big deal. People should do what works for them. Love this video, it's really a mater of preference and lifestyle. I am texlaxed and I love it because I use a great relaxer that's more on the expensive side ( Phytospecific), but sooo worth it, doesn't break my hair, and It no longer takes forever to style, which I love. Do what brings you joy and allows you to enjoy your hair.

    TIP for anyone having issues with relaxers not working well for their hair, I would recommend switching to JHS(Japanese Hair Straightening). I use the Milbon brand in regular. It makes my hair bone straight and it weirdly makes my hair healthier and stronger and silkier. My hair responds way better to it than a relaxer.

    I am natural but I really enjoy your videos 🥰. You give great hair tips, are positive and practical. I find that hair tips from both relaxed and naturalistas are useful. I learned a lot from naturals about hair porosity and reducing heat. Some of your tips like low manipulation and maintenance at the gym are also helpful. I went natural during the pandemic and my hair has grown much fuller and longer. I learned to do what works for me in the end. Whether relaxed or natural though, my goal was always to enjoy wearing my own hair out the majority of the time without extensions or wigs.

  • @oldaccount.1486
    @oldaccount.1486 2 года назад +3

    Love, love, LOVED this video. The irony is that naturals often wear ‘protective styles’ with wigs and weaves, while relaxed women often just wear and care for their natural hair. 🤯 I think the terms we use are a bit outdated. I know naturals that I haven’t seen wear their own hair in months.
    And that’s ok if it works for them. But the blaming and self-righteousness is extra.
    I love relaxing my hair. When it was unrelaxed I loved it, too (sometimes 😜). And I might choose to grow my relaxer out again. It’s all a personal choice-not a communal one.
    Thanks for being so transparent and for sharing how life is meant to be lived. Our hair should not control our daily decisions, and it’s so important to not let other people’s opinions manipulate the choices you make that are best for you.

    Honestly Dom,if the only thing that they have to worry about is if someone should be relaxing their hair or not,then they live charmed lives 🤷🏾‍♀️.More important,is what's in our heads not what's on it! Women should be supporting each other.I couldn't give two hoots about who relaxes their hair or not - it can look nice processed or natural- end of ! I'm glad that you rise above their emotional poison 👊🏾👊🏾

    I stopped relaxing my hair because it would break off so bad. It never gained real length. However when I was relaxed and my mother was taking care of it it was long. I think its because she still cared for it like it was natural using old school products like grease. I'm still not sure if I want to go back relaxed again but if I do, maybe it will work out this time.

    Hi Dom! Yes the trend was always heading this way. It takes a lot to deal with natural hair especially every day for the working girl. I’ve worn Locks natural braid out, relax it again and not going back to natural. I love my hair straight and easier to maintain. Period for me…
