My uncle was a machine gunner on Iwo. He enlisted when he was 16 and was 16 or 17 when he landed on Iwo. He and 13 other Marines were in a bomb crater when a mortar landed inside and everyone was killed with the exception of my uncle. Everytime I saw him I could see it in his eyes. He drank to try and forget. He passed away when he was 85. Rest in Peace Uncle Ralph.

I'm glad he made it home, but it is sad that he had to deal with that trauma.

Such bravery. He would have only been 20-21 at the time. Millions of our soldiers and airmen were that age or even younger during the war.
