Who said Joe Louis couldn’t fight today’s bigger men. Who said Joe Louis had slow hand speed. Joe Louis ate up bigger men. His hand speed was blistering and his punch combinations were perfect in their timing and variation to both head and body. The man was great. Joe Louis was the finest heavyweight boxer of all time. No question. Just ask the great George Foreman. Big George always calls Joe Louis the number one heavyweight boxer of all-time. The man was a genius. The perfect fighter at his peak.
I think Simon deserves some credit for being able to hang around with Louis longer than some guys. He only made it 6 rounds here, but their first fight lasted 13. Incidentally, does anyone recognize Abe Simon as one of Lee J. Cobb's henchman in the classic On The Waterfront.
Abe Simon, Tami Mauriello and Two Ton Tony Galento all appeared in the Brando movie On the Waterfront. All three also were knocked out by Louis challenging for his title.
Chappie Blackburn taught Louis to always throw his weight behind his punches, and never to waste one. Which is why he could beat much bigger opponents like Simon and Carnera .
if you watch the fight closely Louis basically smothered everything Simon threw at him. Louis simply didn't give him room. To say that the heavyweight division was "crap" is unfair. There were plenty of great fighters during that era. The problem is that "technically sound" meant something different during that era. Fighters didn't learn like they do today. Simons however was a tough game guy and shows the Louis would be able to knockout the heavies today.

Nobody ever made knocking a man unconscious look so pretty
Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight

Seen them all but never seen better.. Joe was the king of them all.
Joe donated his purses what a hero, pity the IRS didn't treat him like one.
Abe Simon was a gentleman, coming across the ring to shake hands with Joe Louis!
Louis had it all. jab, hook, uppercut and a terrific right cross. He was fast and balanced and a great finisher.

God, Louis was the greatest, but WHAT A CHIN on Simon!
Joe Louis (the Brown Bomber) was a True American Boxing champion.
Joe Lewis was a machine. Jab, jab, left hook right cross. Move away. Then repeat. Don’t know how Simon withstood that beating for that long.
Whatever you say Abe's skills he was a tough and determined guy
That short left hook by Louis a thing of beauty
14st Louis absolutely wrecking 18stone man with ease !! And he made it look so beautiful bashing someone up !! What a fighter 👏
fuck, abe simon could take a punch! he was out on his feet for half the fight!
the introduction of a modern commentary (notable british commentator)...truly worked....actually added that little more 'reality' to the moment.....
I all ways liked at the end of the round how Joe held up his head, straitened up and walked back to his corner...Pure Class.
