  • 2003 SL500 came in with two red messages on the instrument cluster.
    Battery/Alternator Stop Vehicle
    STOP Brake defective stop vehicle
    These lights appear when the battery in the trunk (Consumers Battery) is not being charged by the alternator or it's under voltage.
    In this particular case the consumers battery was drained because the alternator was not charging it. The alternator did not have voltage at the Battery + bolt. I replaced it with a remanufactured alternator from Autozone. The new alternator did have 14.7 volts at the Battery + bolt. However, the charge was not reaching the consumers battery. The reason was the 200 amp mega fuse in the front prefuse block located in the passenger side footwell labeled F52 was not secured properly. One of the 13mm nuts was loose. After tightening the nut, the new alternator was charging both batteries the rear consumers battery and the front starter battery.
    Here is a link to a very helpful diagram filled with information about the R230 dual battery system.

    This is a good video. Tested my AMG 55SL for the loose connections you found here but they were firm. I am back to my alternator and charging module....

    Ok,well thanks for the eye opener, I'm tired of no radio after 10 seconds, 03 SL500, replaced both batteries, tested front starter battery, I believe 14.1 or 2 V, had no idea of the joint charging fuse and K57 relay, I thank you, will let you know Sir !
    Okay, every test seemed good for voltage, at one point the rear battery (new) with A/C on went to 13.9 then bounced to 14.1. Pulled Bose subwoffer, blue 100 watt fuse was intact, everything tight, put back together, will have friend do major scan, thanks again

    Thanks for the video. Am also experiencing the dreaded red battery warning light. I've confirmed charging (14+V) at each battery, so my fuses and alternator/regulator should be fine. I've also gone through the proper sequence for disconnecting/reconnecting the front and rear batteries, but the red light is still showing. I suspect I just need to clear the code and all will be good. The Bose box that you removed is the subwoofer. Thanks again for sharing.

      Thanks for letting me know what that Bose box is Steve.
      It's possible that both batteries are showing 14 volts on this dual battery system. There is a relay in the trunk labeled K57 that will join the two batteries together during "emergency operation". If the consumer battery (trunk battery) is below 10.8v. K57 will energize, allowing the starter battery (under the hood) to share it's voltage with the consumers battery.
      I would test each battery after it's been sitting without charge for a couple of hours. Make sure the static charge is above 12.1 volts. If it is not, change the battery. If it is... test the batteries with a carbon pile load tester. This will help determine if your batteries are good under load. If either of the batteries fails replace the battery.
      If you find the same exact voltage at both batteries all the time, I would check to see if the K57 relay is stuck in the energized position (closed circuit). If it is, replace the K57 relay.

      @@mercedesbenzspecialist Just wanted to circle-back to you on this thread. I purchased a Foxwell NT510 Elite scan tool with the Mercedes package. The tool identified a fault with the BCM. I cleared the code and the red battery light has remained off ever since. I suspect I triggered the warning when I improperly replaced my starter battery (front) without first disconnecting the consumers battery (rear). Perhaps over time the red battery light may have gone off by itself, but I don't like having codes showing on my dash. Now I just need to replace my TPMS sensors/batteries in each tire and the final dash light (TPMS) will be extinguished. Thanks again for your videos - very informative. Cheers

    Great Video! I also have a 2003 SL500. Do you think it's possible for a low/no charge on the system or consumers battery to cause ABC light to come on?? It appears that is not charging when the car is running.

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  2 года назад +1

      When the battery system is low, all types of malfunctions are possible. The first step would be to correct the charging issue. Then see if the ABC light is still illuminating.

    Question for you - I am seeing the red battery warning light and my locking system no longer works along with the convertible top system. Any idea what’s going on here? Both batteries are in great shape

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  5 месяцев назад

      Off the top of my head, I know there is a fuse that controls the locking system and top under the back seat. Check that fuse.
      The red battery light is on for another reason. If both batteries are good the car starts without issues... is the alternator charging the batteries?

    I charge my rear battery like always , my car sits a lot , but now it measures no charge . Do you think it’s the battery or something else ? Thanks !

    does the F52 100amp fuze charge the starter battery? or is it the 20-0Amp fuze? My Starter battery isn't charging the front battrey

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist

      The 100amp fuse in prefuse block F52 is fused to the starter battery located under the hood.

      Did you ever figure it out? BCM?

    • @AaronsTalks

      I didn't have the red light. But mine is sorted. I disconnect the batteries when I don't use the car and I was disconnecting and reconnecting the batteries the wrong way around. The starter battery always needs to be connected before the rear battery. And the starter needs to be disconnected last. Ever since I've done it this way around, it's worked fine. Hope this helps you@@babytoymania516

    Sl500 no heat blowing. Just cold. Only to face. No legs even if selected. After 10 day driving alerneyor not charging now… help?

  • @MikesMercsandothercars
    @MikesMercsandothercars 3 месяца назад

    If you have red battery light issues, it is REALLY important to check the state of your battery control module in the boot/trunk to make sure there are no signs of burning. See ruclips.net/video/Ts9r_O8dNVM/видео.html
    It is also worth pointing out that unlike a normal car with a single battery system, you wont necessarily see 14v at the starter battery. The BCM switches alternator voltage to the consumer battery depending on a whole host of inputs including temperature, voltage and time. Mike

    I like this but can you tell me that what if the bolts are tight and not loose because I’m going thru the same thing now with my SL500 and my red Battery light is still on with (2) new Batteries and a Alternator in the Car can you tell e possibly what other areas in the rear near the back battery it could be???? Thank you

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  2 года назад

      Is the alternator charging the batteries? With the car running there should be close to 14 volts at both batteries.

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  2 года назад

      Also, did you check the fuses I filmed in this video? Even if the bolts are tight, it’s possible that the fuses are broken. Check to see that you have continuity at those two fuses. You can check with a multimeter. One lead on one side of the fuse the other lead on the opposite side of the fuse. Or just take the fuse out and have a good look at it. Is it broken?

      Check your BCM. It is the silver box under the carpet on the right side of the trunk. About the last thing it could be if you changed your alternator, voltage regular, both batteries, and your footwell fuses. I have read conflicting info on the battery light. Some say it can only be turned off with Mercedes SDS scanner software, others say the light will go out if you pull both front and rear battery neg cables .
