    I was really excited when they announced it and started to put money aside.. but then then I saw all the issues with the cam shaft on that engine and even more troublesome the response KTM as a company has made regarding those issues. It is not reasonable that the owners have to put down that amount of money for new cams (and heads) on a bike with 15k-20k km on it. Unless they guarantee that will not happen, I suspect a lot of people will stay away. I also agree that journalists should mention that in reviews, put more pressure on the manufacturers to react properly and take care of their clients.

    I owned a Svart 401 and adored it. I was thrilled to see the 801 coming until they announced the engine choice. The top end issues and lack of response from KTM/Husky on this issue has me unwilling to buy another Husky product until things improve. I'll be spending my money with Triumph instead.

    Really unique take on the bike, thanks. I think the fact that this bike can be described as 'professional' is why sales will never fly. People buy bikes, by and large, to feel cool, dangerous, exotic maybe. And whilst I quite like its minimal sophistication, it's unlikely to create that visceral connection with its rider that so many other bikes can.

      Maybe because no one outside of KTM actually knows the extent of the problem? It is a problem and KTM should own up to it and get it fixed but I've scoured every forum and page related to the issue and there are maybe 2 or 3 dozen confirmed examples of worn cams. How significant is that if they have sold thousands of these engines? Should all the journalist start bashing the bike straight out of the gate because of some anecdotes? The new 4 year warranty is enough to make me feel OK enough about it that I will purchase one.

    • @subzero-ku2wx
      @subzero-ku2wx Месяц назад +6

      @@BikeWorldTVshow There are no issues that are apparent until the bike fails because the cams wear prematurely. It seems to take about 10 to 15,000 mi before these bikes stop cranking.
      I understand it's hard to assess for long-term reliability, especially when the problem is insidious and requires taking off the valve cover to even diagnose.
      At this point, any bike with an LC8c should be introduced with a disclaimer.

    Buyer Beware. I have owned a new Svartpilen 401 for almost two years now. I have spend the past six months waiting for a replacement for a defective radiator fan. My efforts to reach out to KTM, including corporate, did not help. Not even a response, explanation, apology, or effort to expedite the part. I have waited previously for a month for an oil filter to become available. I'm going on 10 months to a year waiting for other less critical parts. I was eagerly wanting to place an order for the new 801. Now I'll be afraid to take the bike more than 30 minutes from home when and if it's finally repaired. When I did research on the 401 none of the reviewers mentioned the reliability and parts availability problems. I wish I had been warned. I think this is a systemic problem at KTM that they have somehow kept relatively quiet and instead flooded social media with positive videos about new bikes.
