Blue cockpit lights are probably the worst color you could have gone with, you want red so it doesn't mess with your dark adaptation.
Awesome advice - I just purchased my first boat. Thank you for that comment above, hope you’re well.
Unfortunately your right 😮
it dosnt really matter you cant operate a vessel with either of them on.
@@merrittlavelle9289 Just a quick question…you can have them on when at your slip or docked..correct?
Came to the comments to say the same thing!
The air compressor is for the fuel injection. this was one of the first direct injection 2 strokes ever made. that black rail houses both fuel injectors and air injectors. the the fuel gets injected, at the same time the air injector is fired. to directly injecting at high pressure into the cylinder. fuel pressure is usually 10 to 15lb higher than air pressure. depending on which opti block.
Hey Brandon long time boater over here great content brother. A got a couple of tips on launching solo. Never ever ever leave the boat hooked to the trailer when backing into the ramp. This is an easy recipe to one get hurt by the winch handle snapping back and hitting your face and 2 its a great way to sink your truck at the ramp. Keep in mind the bouyancy of the boat will lift the back of the truck depending on how far you go backwards and well bye bye truck. One last thing navigating at night is extremely exhilarating just make sure no lights are shinibg on you. Navigating at night is most safe when no lights are on at all. Dim your gps and vesselview and let your eyes adapt. You will now see more than you ever could! Sorry for the long reply, enjoy!
back down a ramp with the boat disconnected from the trailer ?? , NOPE !!
@@jimmcgee5I see the logic in both, however, the truck will get him home and tow the boat. The boat can float.
Especially considering the price of the truck compared to the boat.
I drive a Ford E350 van and tow a boat with it; I also release the tension on the winch prior to backing it down the ramp. Just enough for the boat to float a little but not enough for it to float away.
I drive down very slowly and my ramps aren't steep so I'm not worried about the boat sliding off.
I do that for the very reason the gentleman stated: if the boat floats, it can take the pressure off my rear end just enough to lose traction. Considering my van is RWD, that would be an absolute nightmare. If I had front or 4x4, I'd be less concerned.
@@DHFlip18 Best practice is to unlatch the winch and let out 4-6 ft of strap before backing it down. That way the boat can float off the trailer but won't float away.
@hiphopgrinch That's exactly what I do. Brandon had his friend by the dock holding on to the boat too.
@@DHFlip18you’re backing up too far if your boat is afloat like that.
When you can launch and trailer your boat on your own, huge win. Good to see everything coming together, the good thing is it is getting done.
That sunset view of Miami skyline was gorgeous! The look on your face was pure joy, made me smile 🥰 Thanks Brandon!
Just a thought. While the prop chatter may be a bit normal, you definately don’t want to spin the hubs off shore and get stranded. Maybe a professional look is in order before you take an off shore trip
Those blue lights are killing your night vision. Red or orange lights at night, just bright enough to see, and only when you need them.
I recommend replacing the water pump impellers as well. This way you will know when they were done.
Great idea!
Boating is working on your boat in exotic places.
The happiness on your face for a successful test run is everything man. All your hard work paying off.
Crossing the water to the Bahamas is gonna be an epic adventure. I’ve seen some cruiser do it at sunrise and it’s so sick watching that sunrise.
Hey Brandon. First off, got my shirt! Fits great and very comfortable. Good to see you getting these little things done. As a life long boater all very normal kind of stuff for a boat that age. I wanted to mention - this are engines not motors 😂. I hope that doesn’t end up on the next shirt! 😮
Thanks for buying some merch!! I appreciate the support! And yeah all pretty normal stuff so far on this thing. But still a long list! And Engines and motors will forever be synonymous to me haha
I just bought a boat in August while on a California road trip with my teenage son. Absolutely spur the moment but I was glad to get it.
The fun part was towing it from Southern Cali back home to NYC. Not to mention where to park the darn thing in NYC 😂😂
Happy to hear a batterie manufacture is solving the cranking issue with lithium batteries. Definitely worth looking into these batteries for my boat.
I see everyone is liking your videos . We want to be part of your adventure. One thing to keep in mind when navigating at night Dime your garmin it helps a lot . Also you can get a night vision camera
Brandon good to see you learning. Sending unit mounts are very specific how they go in. When you took the old one out the wire contact faced the port side of the boat and when you showed the new one I noticed that it faced the stern of the boat. The sender was installed 90 degrees off and is likely why you had a difficult time with it.
You are a clever guy Mr.B🤘👍 lucky you can do so much of the mechanical repairs! Great to see you are discovering your new surroundings in your boat. The views are epic❤❤❤❤
Look after yourself, get your vitamins happening as you guys are in your winter now! Cheers from your number one fan in Melbourne Australia👏🤘❤️
Great boat! I have a 93 and repowered with twin etec 150s back in 2016. As of today they’re still running strong. Love this boat.
Hey Brandon!! I’m sure glad you know how to work on your boat and fix all the issues! That Miami skyline in the sunset was absolutely beautiful! 🤩 Thanks for takin us out for a spin on the boat and showing that!! Lookin forward to your adventures!! Take care and stay safe! Much love ❤️
Lower units are really simple. I was nervous to tear into mine but didnt want to pay what they were tellin me. Bought 2 specialty tools new seal kits and a few gears a few years ago. A bench vise on a small bench and a hr and the thing runs like a champ again!
Hey Brandon the mercury optimal has a compressor that feed air to the fuel rail at 90 psi then goes to the fuel injectors and from there to the air injectors that’s what the compressor is for optimax,s work on 90 psi fuel rails
Yes weather is very important always i mean always respect the wind not rain the wind and current is what makes waves we live on our boat in nc its amazing
The skyline of Miami is really beautiful, been there a few times! My order from your merch is currently on its way to Germany….😃I‘m looking forward to it…😍
Just a heads up on those Opti maxes , if you ever start hitting issues with delivery check your pressures , the fuel barb is on the top left of the motor and the air is on the back left of the rail. Those pressures should come in around 100 psi according to mercury’s mechanics book. Fuel should be around 100 and air around 90 when running. They are electronic diagnostic capable so if you start having issues a good shop should be able to code read those and figure out the problems long before something breaks ideally.
You should get in touch with Alfred Montenero, he does RUclips watching ppl at Haul Over. But he also knows a lot about your boat and can probably help with parts you need and repairing them.
The dude that makes fun of everyone at the boat dock just said in his last video that He has never docked a boat in his life l0l
Keep up the great vids and know fixing boat stuff is a way of life. Thanks for being real. Enjoy your boat.
Been new here the last few months! Have enjoyed all of the content! Moving to Florida should be a game changer for your content! Cant wait to see the growth!
Thank you so much! It's definitely a game changer being down here.
Replace impeller pumps and def pay good attention to the lower ends
Those motors will run a long time.really good to see that thing running that good
What a gem.
a good one when you first went to boating it was not so good but with your building experience things look much better i enjoy them as mush as the ambulance and bus thanks see you later stay healthy
Quick tip when removing a filter, grab it as close to the threads as possible, because that's were it's the strongest.
Bro I can literally relate to how it must feel to cruise like that on the Miami area waterways. When I cruise around the lakes near my area ripping through the water while looking at the sunset on the background, there’s nothing like it!!! Thank you for sharing that experience bro
That juice on the water is definitely worth all the squeeze! Keep enjoying it!
Fuel gauges usually work with a float device in the tank that sends the reading to your gauge. You want to make sure your sending unit isn’t stuck and thats why its reading a full tank.
love the new boat. Keep up the hard work Brandon
Shout out to Eric for helping a guy out, not many people out there that would lend a helping hand without some type of compensation!
Epic sunset drone shot! Keep ‘em coming homie!
Haulover and Crandron Park marina are my favorite marinas in Miami! Can’t wait for Haulover to be finally finished, on the summer it usually gets full on the weekends around 6:30-7:30 am for the most part since there is barely any parking at the moment. I try to avoid 79st marina the most I can… Good luck in your build, it’s coming along!
Love the video. You should wear your boat's kill switch when you're out by yourself going fast, and make sure you have a good fire extinguisher on the boat. Just want you to be safe, man.
Got 3 fire extinguishers! And yeah kill switches are probably a good idea
@BrandonGross Awesome! Have fun out there. I'm in North FL and no longer have my own motorboat or sailboat. However, I took your advice from a few videos ago in which you said something along the lines of, "It doesn't matter how big the boat is. Just get out there on the water." I took your suggestion and got a kayak 😁. I'm taking it out on its maiden voyage some time this week. I might even start filming after I get some practice paddling. So, thank you for the advice and inspiration. It got me back out on the water for the first time in years! Be safe, and enjoy FL!
@ comments like this are the greatest thing ever! I’m so glad you’re getting back out on the water!! Thank you for supporting my channel !
From the little you said about the steering ram, the seals are probably going bad but you might be able to just tighten them and get a few more months out of them. Either way, make sure you bring steering fluid with you. Best of luck!
love your channel bro!!
When in doubt change all the trailer's wiring out, from the plug to all the way to the lights, check for rust & corrosion in the lights too. Make sure all the lights are water tight.
Yeah honestly doesn’t seem like too bad of a job. Then I’ll know it’s all solid
Nice video am learning alot about boats with you, that was sick thanks for the content
Great vid as always buddy loving it.😁
Yes, on the water. Great video. Keep it up.
Stainless boat buckles are supper dupper handy. Keep them lubed and oiled. Sand and salt with grim them up.
You need to be very careful with the fuel in the tank, if you haven't found out already. If it has been sitting for a long time, phase separation could have occurred and/or there could be water in the fuel from condensation in the tank.
That is a good point and he better make sure the fuel is ethanol free.
like others have said use red or no lights underway, also turn your nav screens to night or low light mode. the nav screens if too bright will mess with your night vision. tightlines!
Glad you are healthy again, good content
@Brandon Gross be sure to get a few extra spare parts like fuel filters and oil filters for the boat. You never know when you’re going to need one.
Those 5 holes on the sending unit do line up. You have to turn it hole by hole. It’s to make sure the float arm is oriented correctly and it doesn’t hit tank side
The unit had an adjustment to make the float arm go in whatever direction I needed. I made sure it doesn’t touch the pickups or the sides
Love your channel, pretty sure u did some research when it comes to lithium batteries, at least on inboards u need a DC to DC charger in order not to burn the alternator. I have been using lithium for a while and is worth it.
Take that ram to a hydraulic shop and have them pressure test and reseal it, make sure it’s not just leaking from a fitting as well cuz you can fix that yourself. But a local hydraulic shop will most likely be much cheaper than a whole new ram
Great job making repairs Brandon. Sure beats the Ohio with those locks and dams!
Get with my buddy Ariel with Miami Living 305 l! He does it on a regular and plans trips to do it with other boats wanting to cross over! You definitely want to do it in a group setting the first couple of trips! Also! Always unhook the trailer lights before backing in and out of the water! 😎👍🏼
We will look for ya to show up on an episode of Credit card Captain there at haulover.😊
I'd also check to see if the VHF radio is hooked to the chartplotter GPS and has an MMSI # in case of an emergency that could really help. Couple other things that might be handy to have are a VHF handheld radio, EPIRB, and TOWBOAT US or SEATOW membership so if you do need a tow its not insanely expensive.
Great fun to watch, and yeah, always work to do... But like I've mentioned in your previous video and others also mentions, blue LEDs, not good, red is the way to go. Have a look at any of all of the sailing guys going through the night, always red 🙂
You should get a dual battery solenoid, will save you when off shore especially. It saves your start battery when your engines aren't running
I’m thinking I’m in the same boat ( pun intended). lol. The boat I bought to get my wife and I into boat life was a totaled boat that I was told wasn’t. Now I have to spend the winter repairing and checking things so I don’t sink! So much for “ boat life” this year!
Ah that’s brutal. But on the plus side you’ll learn a lot and know you have a solid boat when done
Exactly Brandon, it's all about perspective! And think of it this way, you'll not only learn a lot, but you'll be satisfied knowing it was done. One less thing to worry about later.
❤❤❤❤those t-shirt designs with the anchor look awesome Mr.B❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hey mam, love those Rhino straps. They worked great for me in Pgh, but in Florida, not so much. My daughter bought a set for her boat. Was at her place a couple times this week and noticed how quickly hers corroded. All I can suggest is to do regular preventative maintenance. Fresh water rinse and some lube. Btw, you're probably already aware, but Navionics is helpful.
Can’t wait to get there!
26:52 get the magnetic Bluetooth lights saves hassle of cable
Turn that radar on if it works. You can cruise safely at night with that. Learn to read it by practicing during the day. Great video and that is a very capable hull.
Yeah the radar is definitely something I'll be looking into more. I have so much to learn
Also always add extra 10-15% of miles onto each straight shot that your running if you don’t have auto pilot / hold when your calculating gas sometimes it’s better to invest in a fuel bladder and sender and have it just incase
If you’re going to The Keys, you HAVE to stop in Marathon.. get a slip at Faro Blanco or Safe Harbor.
Yeah, unfortunately that boat is 'too small' to tie up at Faro Blanco. They only allow boats over 50ft on their docks, don't have a ramp, and won't let you park your trailer in their massive empty lot. Least accommodating marina in the keys. Also, I won't launch at any public ramps in Marathon again since they increased the fee from $0 to $70 this past year.
@@spearmethedetails2248 $70 just to launch your boat at a public ramp? Insane!
drain oil when hot and replace with heavier grade gear oil.
The sending unit has to be water tight or else you may flood your fual tank with water if the village pumps don't turn on in heavy rain.
My favorite dopamine hit
many more to come! thank you!
Hot ! You will pray for that cruiser with Aircon in the summer down here in Florida 😂
AMAIZING i LIVE IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND BOATING AND FISHING IS THE BEST
Brandon The wiring short on the trailer maybe from what i can see in video. Is the wires going through the hole in the galvanized trailer without a rubber grommet. and chaffed through the insulation tape. Worth a rubber grommet anyway. Still loving the content still quiet brave going out and not heading back before dark keep them coming all best Mart
There is alot to learn.try to take peoples comments with a grain of salt
The florida boating community is awesome.keep your eyes and ears open to many different ways be around florida water.best of luck bro.i hope nothing but fat fish and bigg butts.
Hello blue glad you're feeling better. Boat is definitely getting there. At least with the trailer lights you caught it before you got going, silver lining dude and all that. Anywho dude bye for now. Yo ho, ho and a bottle of rum.🤗😃✋✌️👍
awesome stuff sweet shots off the water / skyline .. but she flying on the water awesome test drive .. that deserves a sub .. big thumbs up 👍😃👍
You can convert the fuel sender to NEMA, everyone makes this adaptor :)
Awesome video I can see you put a lot of time and effort in editing
yeah you GOTTA get rid of the blue lights. they are blinding ya. Put red or turn 'em off 😄😄
I'd suggest taking care of the hydraulic steering leak before going anywhere far. I knew a guy years ago that bought a twin outboard boat figuring if one motor went out the other would get him home. Far offshore he had an issue with his hydraulic steering that left him stranded since the motors wouldn't turn in either direction. Just a thought
Already got the new one! Just need to a install
Just another tip on launching and recovering. You’re in too deep. It’s fine in smooth calm waters like in the video but if you’re every anywhere not as protected with some waves it’ll be a problem. Especially recovering. You’ll pull out and the boat will be crooked. Good rule of thumb is for about an inch of the wheel fenders to be above the water. Then you can use the ropes, or the winch, or the engines to get on/off the trailer.
They said get a boat it be fun 😂
Dude you can wire the fuel gauge to smart craft/vessel view. It goes into the connector on the starboard motor
Wow that was a lot of work sir Brandon! But you'll get through it thats for sure. and so as Brandonina (The new boat) is fighting for you too 😉. Merry Christmas sir brandon ,to your family and to everyone here.have some break sir on christmas! I am requesting for a simple celebration with your family please. We love to see that side of you to know you more than your amazing skills. Thank you for this new video 🎄🫡🫶
Night vision with Blue or Red lighted gages. After thousands of hours of night flying, I almost always chose the plane with blue instrument lighting. It caused much less eye strain for me.
Here in the UK I just bought and American Striper 22WA which is very similar to your Robalo except with a single 150hp Suzuki. On the sea trial it was leaning all over the place so before collecting it proper we had fitted a pair of ZipWakes, boy the difference is immense. She now rides flat and smooth regardless of who is on the boat. Might be a relatively low cost upgrade for yours?
Brandon I love that ramp I launch out all the time from there let’s ride one day 🤘🏻
cheers Brandon :)
living on a converted hovercraft next maybe?
I agree with the keys trip, get some more hours on thoese engions at high RPM crusing speed before you head to bimini. It could get ugly out there even with seatow or boatus. They take a while to respond.
I always pop a little hole in the side of the filter with the screwdriver, been doing it that way for years and never had a problem
You are definitely a hard worker You aren't scared to get things done
I try my best! I hate paying shops to do this stuff for me. I prefer to learn it all
The lithium batteries can cause a failure of your charging system. They can draw a lot of current from the system when they are drained. Newer outboards may be lithium ready.
Be careful messing with the fuel systems on those Optimax. There are several things that make it seem like you have fuel delivery issues. Worst mistake you can make is replacing the oem fuel pumps with cheap aftermarket ones. They draw more amperage through the ECM and can easily send you into another $2k adventure...
Great boat content u need to update the charts to with 1 ft contour the new navionics ones are the best so u dont run a ground and not brights red lights at night will help u not to loose your nightvision congrats on the new boat
19:02, looks like you have 2 leaks from the live well strainer intake. From the quick clip, it looks like two water leaks. ( unless its dried glue or something).
Those alternators in the optimaxes are not designed for charging lithium batteries. You could end up with a fire or alternator failure. Lithium batteries have a much higher float voltage than lead acid batteries. You should install a proper dc-dc lithium charger between the batteries and the VSR or motors.
You definitely need to reach out to 'Out on the Reef'. You guys could do a 2-ship bahamas trip, providing you with some mutual support for the crossings. That would be an epic watch!
I would love to do that. I’ve been reaching out to some people about making the trip
Also glad to see you fixed your light height
Cave exploring, corkscrew looks like good practice for owning a boat
Not sure if anyone else commented, but the battery leakage may be due to overcharging from the alternators. Looks like they swelled up and burst. I would install a battery charge control for the lithiums to ensure you don’t have problems with them as well. In addition, lithium will take lots of current so without some control you can fry the alternators. Epoch may have handled this with the BMS and admittedly I’m not familiar with that particular battery. I have the Epoch Marine 460ah.
I’m gonna talk to epoch about it. Hopefully that have that all set up
Test the thermostats to see if they open at the right temp or just replace if it's not the thermostat check the poppet valves if that valve isn't restricting the amount of water you could run to cold
Dont rush it
You really need to know your boat well for the bahams.i had a storm blow up with my dad and had to leave my tripple motor cat at big game fishing club in bimini.in teo days it suck at their dock on the port side.swamped two motors.the dockmaster wasnt liable because i signed without look at the fine print.paid big money to have stored.i limped back to florida on one motor.be careful friend
Top luck to you
I would get infrared radar for night boating. Good investment
