    Maybe use a high temp plastic clip to hold surface mount components. They're hard at first, but the better you can "anchor" it the easier it is.

    Sometimes, melting through the plastic/rubber on the wire is the only way. Most people do that with bodge wires.

    Never solder sockets with the chip in. It's really easy to overheat the chip (especially with large chips). Just solder the socket, add the chips when you are finished soldering.

    Most people like leaded solder better, but like you lead free is better. It just takes a minute to get used to.
