- BE WARNED - THIS IS A LONG AS 'F' VIDEO
It is entirely possible I totally messed this one up, but hey it sorta works. As always, Lazy Sunday projects are a learning experience for me rather than you :-) You missed out on a few cool ones while I didn't have a camera but I saved the ones I think will make for a good video (this one falls into another category)
Turns out that AM only comes out of the headphone jack, go figure. It sounds terrible though and I can't pick up an actual station.

It turns out that 'Likes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.
I don't have a Patreon or a donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.u...
If you want to get in contact Twitter is probably the best way @mrdavidjwatts

It's amazing we would never buy a crappy radio like that that was prebuilt already, but we'll happily buy a kit, spend a couple of hours building it and be happy as anything it actually works. I'm getting well into these kits, love em.
What gets me is that the kits are more expensive than complete radios.
The coils and ferrite core need to be tuned to make sure you have the right setup to get the correct frequency range.
Respect ma'am...
When using those sidecutter, pleasepleaseplease put a finger from your other hand over the end of the lead you are going to snip. Just holding the end of the lead down gently (no need to puncture your finger) will prevent it flinging away into your computer, your coffee or your eye. Please :/
I think it was fun! Thumbs up.
"Magnetism, I hate you so much", he said, while building an electromagnetic receiver. Nice one!
Glad to see you have a new camera. Good quality too. Well done on the build :-)
You need to tune those internal 7t and 8t coils slightly by separating them slightly. There has to be 'air' between them. A little screwdriver will do the job. It's also helpful to tune the variable capacitor with the small screws on it's back. Case and pcb have to be out of the case and turned on using a dc power supply when doing it so you could hear the radio come to life.
Tried that. Helps with FM but nothing works for AM.
Not picking up FM stations seems to be a regular thing with these radio kits. I had the same issue.
Also there is usually a little spring included with the kit. This spring is soldered onto the antenna pad on the pcb and makes contact with the antenna when the case is screwed together. It saves trying to solder a wire to it. :-)
Mine didn’t have that spring but I thought it should, I don’t have one that works though. And mine has issues with fm, worked once and now nothing. As for am I get a sports talk channel and a church channel
I've not screamed at my computer screen so much for ages.... ;-)
The AM band does not work because you put a screw through the wires? I noticed that you had the two wires coming out of the screw hole :D :D
+RandomLOLGamer Turns out that AM only works through the headphone jack for some reason. The wires went through the board cut-out and the screw went into the plastic stand-off.
oh, well then, atleast it works :D
@@DavidWatts needs an external aerial ... for AM ... try using a long strand of wire to the antennae and hang the other end to a pole/metal window/or metal bed frame ....
@@DavidWatts If you check your video you will see the other hole nearer to the batteries is the hole for the AM wires. Have watched other video's of the same kit and the AM was working without having the headphones plugged in.

WOW, congrats on the new camera! ...that happened faster than anticipated!
I did some extra work and opted for a much cheaper camera than the one I wanted.
Good to see this in 1440p :)
I would have started soldering the smd ic
I noticed you have this advice on several build videos
What do you guys think? Which way to insert the ferrite rod? Tight against the other flat bar already in the coil or 90 degrees to it leaving an air gap? The first will probably really distort the shape into an oval, almost rectangle but tight against it seems to be the one to me.
Mine seems to work quite well except the stations are very close together and the knobs are too recessed. I believe you may have to set the smaller variable cap trimmers within the larger vari cap. I'm not sure exactly how to tune this, one of these trimmers seemed to shift fm stations around and one seemed to tune am in stronger. I changed some of the wires to stronger multi strand as they kept snap[ping as i was messing around. your main tuner coil should not have had a 3rd spare wire so it's probably snapped somewhere, perhaps why you have no AM? I spread the 8T coil approx in the middle, i think this helped me find my FM band. I think the two coils are to filter out unwanted frequencies, i would like to know exactly how to tune them. i thought perhaps one is for FM and one is for AM.
One of the most therapeutic hobbies out there, well, when you are not troubleshooting. Or you know, Chinese instructions lol.
That black bar is a ferrite rod, where the larger coil of wire goes. It is the AM antenna. The tuning capacitor has to go on a certain way. How do you get T.V, when it is all digital now? Cool video. Cheers!
I liked it David. That's a fun project even if the outcome did not worth the hassle. It was very informative overall and helped me with my soldering skills. Cheers!
I recently assembled this kit and it hardly picked up anything until I did the allignment procedure then it worked fairly well. As you stated, a rubbish kit but in the end it worked! 🎶
The camera looks great, at least on my monitor. I wouldn't mind a short little review at some point once you've gotten used to it.
Also the black cutting mat looks great on camera. Very crisp.
-- Cheers
Hi David! Congrats on the new camera!
About the Chinese instructions: I wonder how well translation apps would work on that. You know, one of those phone apps that translates whatever the camera sees?
1. It would be hilarious to read the translation.
2. It might be helpful.
Ah the google translate app!!! That is a brilliant idea, I will give it a go next time.
Definitely resistors first and put your finger over the leads when you cut...
Awww... but where would the fun be when I start recording in 3d?
any mistake on AM ferrite coil. by the way, that is a chinesse work. lol.
That Etta hole is for the am coil wires
I have one of these radio kits I had forgotten about. It might be time for me to screw something up , I mean put something together!
Sir i want to buy this kit plz tel me how i wil buy it
Loving the new imagery. I'd love a camera of even half that calibre - and way less than half the price lol. Let's hope you get on with it, as there's nothing worse than getting a new device and being dismayed as certain aspects of it. Your audio is great, too. There's a little bit of "the voice of God" going off (nothing serious or worth over analysing), but it's nice and warm, not brash or harsh like some people produce.
Looking forward to future vids - and streams too. I'd like it if you could explain some basic stuff in separate vids regarding code structures, functions, the voids regarding Arduino IDE etc. one day. Most coding related vids / channels go from 0 to 1, then from 100 to 1000, nothing in between. Your chilled presentation should lend itself to this imo, going by the content I have been (binge) watching.
Anyway enough ramble, thanks for your your videos, persistence of quality, and your general demeanour.
Just starting Electronics about 2 months ago Carrie trying to learn the best I can. I bought five of these for practice first one did not work at all. But I have four more, the second one doesn't work either. What the freak
Can someone please help me, same thing I have a radio which is not receiving any FM channels
resistors first !
The ferrite slab is a clue to there being an AM band.
Very relaxing :-)
Só faltou mostrar o esquema desse radinho à pilha. Obrigado.
This video needs a "that's what she said" edition... :)
I had to align mine
You have left a strap (link) of on the borad
It is not TDA 2622 but TDA 2822 which is a dual amp IC
Hi, i did it too, but in my radio fm is no signal, i think i was wrong in the edition, but its a good fun. Great job, greetings from brazil
What happened to your Lazy Sunday Tesla coil project? I was looking forward to that. :P
+William saila that one frightens me
Bonjour j'ai monté le même mais sa capte pas de l'aide svp
Pity about the components you have solder ....
TDA9088 chip tastes better with Whisky! Great work!
I have done two of these now. I had to snip 1 turn off one of the coils to get the radio to tune the UK FM band properly. MW is hopeless.
They are a waste of time.
Single malt?
Nah, it's a cheapo blend. I can't afford the good stuff.
It's amazing that the Chinese are still foisting these off on unsuspecting losers like us. I built this same kit a few months and ago. The FM section worked marginally well but the AM section was pathetic. It managed to bring in one AM BCB station with an external antenna attached but overall performance was so poor that I just tossed it in the trash bin.
mine is called Paeansonic
That is the best one, or at least the funniest name.
omg, the schematics reminds me building a lye detector using "mez elektronik" (or maybe it was radio too?) anybody familiar with that suitcase?
why bother with the coffee ^^
...thanks for the vids !
11:00 ok then
yipee
