    I actually own the Sundaras based on your review of it, and I truly love the way the musical instruments sound on it. I'm using it on the Ifi Zen Signature Stack that I got for my HD6xx. I really enjoy the xbass feature with the Sundaras, gives is a slightly deeper and fuller sound.

    • @mattrismatt

      I highly recommend swapping the Sundara's stock pads for *ZMF Auteur Perforated Hybrid Pads.* Everything about the sound improves, including the frequency response, soundstage, imaging, and bass impact. And with ear-shaped openings, comfort improves, as well...though I have also slightly bent the metal headband to decrease clamping force.
      To affix any aftermarket earpads, specialized attachment rings are required: included with HIFIMAN's cheapo $10-15 velour and pleather earpads, as well as some third party models.

Other pads that sound great with the Sundara: *Brainwavz Hybrid* (Angled or XL, not the standard oval model) and Dekoni Elite Hybrid (the ones designed the BeyerDynamic DT series, which have a slightly larger ear opening than their model designed for HIFIMAN headphones).

    I'm starting a new build, I've got the Arya SE with me and I'm waiting on the Gustard H16 to come and pair it with the topping e70v. Its funny how similar this is to your build Josh.
    I started this hobby with the sundara paired with the topping DX3 pro+. Love the value, although I was craving for more details, soundstage. I really enjoyed the tonality of the sundara, hence why I opted in for the Arya SE.
    Thinking also along this year to pick up the HD600. This way I'll have basically 2 diferent sound signatures to listen.
    Congratz on your work!

    Thank you for the effort you put into your reviews. Thoroughly informative channel.
    I have my heart set on two products so far that resumes where I last left off on my audiophile journey. I want to buy the following :
    1) Hifiman Aria Stealth Magnets
    2) Eversolo DMP -A6
    For my connection to the mobile and using the headphones on the go, I will be using my iphone conncted to a Qudelix-5k phone DAC. For home usage I am keen to explore the idea of buying an entry level budget pre amp for my home setup as I wont be using the Qudelix. My questions are:
    a) Which preamp will complement products 1 and 2 in the chain above?
    b) Is buying balanced cables necessary ? If so which budget ones do you recommend? The eversolo uses 3 pin XLR sockets
    c) how will the above compare to a popular Schiit modius + magnius combo for the headphones? Will there be much difference in sound quality ?
    4) Is there a big jump in sound quality using Tube amps and is it worth the investment over the Schiit combo you recommended
    TQ

    I'd love for you to do a TOTL build with the 1266 Phi TC. There are 2 direction you can go tubes vs. Solid State. On the tubes side there is Cayin HA-300, Viva Egoista 845, Woo WA33, DNA Stratus trafomatic primavera and on the solid state you can go Wells Headtrip2/Milo reference, XI Audio Formula S + Powerman, Niimbus US4+, Flux Labs Volot, Moon Audio 430. As you move up from the $2.5 price range to the $5k+ range which is the right move to make and what are the limitations? I would assume at the lower price point you'd want to stick SS but increasing the budget would make sense to go tubes.

    Since the Sundara is such a value champion, could you please make a value build recommendation that revolves around the headphone?

    • @mattrismatt
      @mattrismatt 3 года назад

      If he does, I hope he recommends swapping out the earpads as part of the budget. I use *ZMF Auteur Perforated Hybrid Pads* on my Sundara. With them, everything about the sound improves, including the frequency response, soundstage, imaging, and bass impact. And with ear-shaped openings, comfort improves, as well... though I have also slightly bent the metal headband to decrease clamping force.
      To affix any aftermarket earpads, specialized attachment rings are required, which are included with HIFIMAN's $10-15 velour and pleather earpads, as well as some third party models.

    • @mrvitalikish
      @mrvitalikish 3 года назад

      @@mattrismatt as a Sundara owner, thank you for addressing issues that are just so relatable. I've looked at the pads but at that price I don't know if they're worth it since they bring the price/performance ratio way down.

    • @mattrismatt
      @mattrismatt 3 года назад

      @@mrvitalikish Pad swapping on the Sundara makes a HUGE difference to the resulting sound. And if you choose wisely, the benefits turn the headphones into a whole other class in sound and comfort.
      ZMF's pads are a bit expensive, but they'd only bring the price/performance ratio down if they didn't improve the sound. (IMO, this isn't the case.)
      I just did some more Sundara pad-swapping and discovered that the (more affordable) *Brainwavz Hybrid XL* pads are even more spacious sounding and a bit warmer than the ZMF pads. I have to say, the sound is quite impressive with my *Geshelli Labs Erish* balanced amp. This may be the best overall headphone 'combo' I've heard... and I still have yet to upgrade my DAC. (I have my eye on the upcoming Topping D30 Pro.)
      You could also try the *Brainwavz Hybrid Angled* pads, which bring the driver further from your ears and would likely provide a better around-ear seal, both attributes that would result in greater bass than with the XL pads.
      I'm also curious to try the *Dekoni Elite Hybrid* pads (the ones designed the BeyerDynamic DT series, which have a slightly larger ear opening than their model designed for HIFIMAN headphones), but they are also on the expensive side.

    • @mrvitalikish
      @mrvitalikish 3 года назад

      @@mattrismatt I genuinely appreciate your recommendations. This kind of trial-and-error process is costly and it's nice to have someone who has already been through the process, not to mention the time put into research. The bolded names of the pads also show that you do care. I'd definitely try out the pads mentioned cuz quite frankly I'm sold on those ZMF pads. It's a shame that EQ-ing is gonna be a little more complicated since there is no pre-existing data with regard to this headphones and pads combo.

    That’s exactly the position I’m about to find myself in but was surprised to hear Clear used as an example. Everything I’ve read and seen says Clear could even run without an amp and so I figured that if you were to run an amp at all with Clear, you could easily get away with a cheaper setup (such as the Schitt stack).

    I wonder why there was no mention of the Ananda's with the Magnius/Modius stack. I have both 2021 Sundara's and the Ananda's, and the Sundara's wear my ears out quickly. The Ananda's are less strained, much easier to listen to. Still searching for the dac/amp combo that really works with Sundara's without numbing your ears.

    • @mattrismatt
      @mattrismatt 3 года назад

      What did you mean by "numbing your ears"? I recommend swapping the Sundara's stock pads for *ZMF Auteur Perforated Hybrid Pads.* Everything about the sound improves, including the frequency response, soundstage, imaging, and bass impact. And with ear-shaped openings, comfort improves, as well...though I have also slightly bent the metal headband to decrease clamping force.

    I am wondering what if Topping+Gustard is replaced by RME ADI-2 DAC. The advantage I would say would be the audio equalizer. Disadvantage would be missing Bluetooth for occasional streaming from phone.

      @@MrMolchester Thats what some reviewers seem to think. However, that notion honestly seems bizarre considering that its measured frequency response is dead flat. I really wish there were some examples of blind tests done between the Magnius and the Asgard 3. While I haven't heard either of them, my prediction is that the only real difference you need to consider between the two is if you want to run the Arya single ended or balanced, since the Magnius's single ended out measures quite poorly.

    I currently have the Arya paired with the A90/Modius. I am looking at getting the Gustard X16. Should I stick with the A90 for the amp or do you think it would be a better pairing if I get the Gustard H16 with the X16? I can still return the A90 so I wouldn’t be losing any amp money.

    Hey Josh - I feel like you were talking directly to me at the start of the video. I have an LCD-X that I got from your recommendation for planar performance with more bass than Arya and less upper detail. I haven't been enjoying them, but I have a V1 Schiit Magni and it is very glare-y exactly like you say here. Cheap, old amp that doesn't have the power output. Would you recommend the Schiit Asguard 3 or Magnius to pair with it?

    On Shenzhen Audio's website under the specs for the Gustard H16 it says: "Maximum undistorted output power 3700mW into 64Ω LOAD balanced output". Does that mean you will encounter some distortion if you're driving the Arya's at 35ohms impedance? I could be confused.
    Edit: Im just bringing this up because I was looking at this AMP for driving my HE6SEs at 50ohms impedance.

    I currently have a Shiit stack, Magni 3 heresy and Modi 3. And I use a Drop-Sennheiser HD6XX. What would be my next step to upgrade? I think the build shown above would be a bit too much for me to just spend on something that I'm just starting out in. (Used my current setup for about a year now.)
    Would I benefit from just a new Amp and/or DAC? And then I could upgrade my headphone whenever I find a good deal?

      Arya is very comfortable and can easily be worn for that length of time. I have big ears and have no complaints.
      The lcd2c is still comfy but feels heavy and is hot on the ears after a while. They also seal around your ears so if you move with them on you feel the air pressure. I think its something you can adjust to though especially at the price vs arya.
      Just to be clear, the lcd2c is a very different sound signature from the arya.
