    Thank you so much for making these videos. I'm going on my first ever paddling trip - Smoke Lake, Ragged, Big Porcupine - in September. It is so great to see how someone else does it and learn about the lakes. You didn't have dinner as planned but WE learned from watching the Sausage Fail. I was planning on bringing that and maybe I'll precook it a bit. Thanks!

      Thanks sue. Good luck on your trip. Have you taken any courses to learn the ins and outs of backcountry camping or are you going with someone experienced? That’s quite a loop for a first time backcountry trip. Hope you’re safe out there. 😊

    Yellow-Yellow mama bear in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. She died, but taught her cubs how to get into the Bear Vault. Mixed info on whether there are currently any bears in the area that can open them, but the DEC doesn't want you using them in the High Peaks region.

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 года назад

      Great info. Thanks. What do they want you using in the high peaks?

    • @aprilmiller1831
      @aprilmiller1831 4 года назад +1

      @@CamperChristina They require a hard canister in the High Peaks during the season bear are active, but push you to use one of the other brands, like Garcia. They say they are not allowed, but the regulation doesn't state that. Also cannot use an Ursack or hang food there. www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7225.html
      It is a high use area and the bears are familiar with camping locations and go for easy pickings. Many other places are fine. And further reading says she didn't teach her cubs and that no other bears have opened them. But the rumors abound.
      My trips are typically no more than 3 days and I have no trouble fitting in what I need. I like how the clear plastic makes it easier to see what you're grabbing and the wide opening. I don't foresee myself camping in the high peaks area, so the BV450 is fine for my use. In particular, it keeps the chipmunks out!!!

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 года назад +1

      I don’t think I ever would camp there either but good info to know. I have had up to 6 days of food in the canister that I have so suits me well also. Thanks for the great comments. Hope to hear from you again. cheers !

    Hi Christina, thank you for the video. I like solo canoe camping too. Bill Mason once said, “people say you should not do wilderness camping alone, funny...I have never heard that from anyone who has done it”. :-) I have not been able to get out yet this year, so thank you for letting me live vicariously through your trip.

    Just an FYI, if you use metal skewers they help things cook a little from the inside, so if you'd used one on the plain sausage you probably wouldn't have lost it and the one in the wrap might have gotten more cooked before the dough turned mushy. But I probably would have cooked the sausage most of the way before putting the dough on it anyway. I did wonder why you didn't just lift the grill off the fire to get at the one that fell in. LOL

    Do you still have to place to bear canister far away from your tent? Or can you place it near you when you sleep? Just wondering I always bear bag and far away from where I sleep, I was just wondering if it was the same with the bear canister?

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 года назад

      Yes, I bring it out to a spot in the woods away from the tent. Just for added safety. Nothing crazy though. I have total faith in it. Lol.

    I stayed at that same campsite in mid-June this year (also a solo trip.) I agree that it is a great campsite. It's on a point with good swimming and is very private. Most of the canoe traffic seems to go the other way around the island as you enter Ragged Lake. There is a site further into Ragged Lake on an elevated island that appears to have it's own sandy beach, but I bet it is very hard to get because of its desirability.
