Spanish soprano, Montserrat Caballe was an operatic diva of the first order. Dubbed "La Superba" (the superb one) by the Italian public, she had an international career in concert and opera that started in the 1960's. Yes, Brian had to finish the last verse of Mother Love because Freddie was too ill to come back to the studio again. It gives me chills when I listen to the power in Freddie's voice in the first 2 verses. He was facing his imminent death and yet his voice was so strong and dynamic. Probably one of the strongest people to ever live, facing such a horrible disease and signing his heart out until the bitter end. He will always be my hero.
*Barcelona* - when the archer lit the Olympic Flame with a flaming arrow from a long distance away - I jumped out of my chair and said _"that's the coolest thing I've ever seen."_
You are right Jamal. Freddie loved opera. And Montsy was his idol. He finally got up the nerve to ask her to sing together. They made an album and the rest is history. They loved each other so much. This was 3 years before he passed away. But he did what he always wanted to do now he can rest in peace.
Rock meets opera! Only our Freddie 💕 even while being extremely sick can create magic in your soul and she is an amazing opera singer. I can’t listen to this song enough. She passed away a couple of years ago.
I was born in Barcelona and still live here. I remember those days when my beautiful city was looking forward for the Olympic Games in 1992, we, all the people, felt so proud both, for Freddie Mercury writing this MASTERPIECE about Barcelona and for our great Montserrat Caballé, singing it with him. That period may be the happiest of my life. Lovely memories. VISCA BARCELONA!!!
Every time I hear this I fill up with tears. Freddie has been gone 30 years next year, and I'm still grieving. Only one Freddie ps for the people who gave this a thumbs down. You have no souls
How I hate that he is gone and her as well. What a loss, but what a gift to have had them in this world. Heavenly angelic choirs could not surpass this. I am crying!
Freddie had so many different talents, whether it was singing rock, opera, writing songs, designing costumes, he was so multi-talented, makes you wonder what else he may have accomplished had he lived longer. Yes, if I remember right, they did this duet for the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain 1992. He was a true showman; he gave the audiences everything he had.
Montserrat Cabella passed away in 2018, but honestly listen to anything she's done. There was a reason Freddie specifically wanted to work with her on this project - he was a huge fan of hers.
Opera singer Montserrat Caballe died in 2018, at the age of 85 in Barcelona. The Spanish artist was renowned for her bel canto technique and her interpretations of the roles of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. She also achieved pop success with Freddy Mercury on Barcelona in 1987. "Spanish soprano, Montserrat Caballe was an operatic diva of the first order. Dubbed "La Superba" (the superb one) by the Italian public, she had an international career in concert and opera that started in the 1960's. Freddy was always an opera fan and specifically a fan of hers. The collaboration with her on this duet he said was a *dream come true". She asked freddie if he could sing this with her during the opening ceremony for the Olympics in Barcelona. He told her im sorry I won't be able to make it. When she asked him why he told her it was because he was dying and didn't have a lot of time left.
I'm so glad you finally got around to this one. There was no limit to the talent Freddie had and Montserrat was a legend. It's so sad that we have lost both of them.
Omg! One of my FAVORITE Freddie songs ! Like listening to the angels singing. Yes, it was recorded for the 1992 Olympics, which sadly Freddie didn't live to see.
Freddie Mercury loved opera. So it makes perfect sense for him to sing with a full blown operatic soprano, in Montserrat Caballé. Freddie was also really, really not an opera singer, and would never have claimed to be (operatic singing is a very specific controlled style, with no rasping of the voice). But he had incredible vocal range and power, so it does make perfect sense that once she'd realised that, Montserrat Caballé would want to sing with him. The heartbreaking thing about this song was that, although it wasn't written for the Barcelona Olympics (it was originally released five years earlier), Freddie never lived to see it used as the theme for the games (which is was).
Finally! You’ve heard pure magic! No matter how many times I hear this song, it brings me to tears! Incredible! This has to be one of the best songs ever! Thank you for reacting to this song! ❤️☮️
It was through this song that I introduced my mum and dad - who were well into their 70's to Freddie. They simply adored him, and his and Queen's back catalogue thereafter, and became huge fans. Love you, Freddie x
Cabellá was such an amazing singer. Her performance of “O Mio Babbino Caro” is absolutely the best rendition of that song I’ve ever heard! Thanks for featuring her on your channel 🙏🏻
In 1999, the UEFA Champions League soccer final was played in Barcelona between Manchester United and Bayern Munich. In the pre-game ceremonies, Montserrat Caballe sang her part live, and a recording of Freddie played in the stadium. Many saw it as an omen that there would be some magic that night. Sure enough, there was... Bayern Munich led 1-0 after an early free kick goal, and looked to have the trophy wrapped up. Suddenly, in stoppage time right before the match ended, Manchester United scored the tying goal. Then, about two minutes later, still in stoppage time, United won a corner kick. David Beckham played the ball in, then a header was hit down. Having come in off the bench, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stuck out his foot, and as it turned out, he hit it just well enough for the ball to go into the top corner of the net past legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The legendary call of "...And Solskjaer has won it!" still rings out in Manchester United lore. Sure enough, it was the winning goal. Bayern Munich players collapsed in disappointment when the ball went in, and the referee had to convince them to stand up. Manchester United became the first English team to win what was called a "treble" - winning the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in the same season. Their main rival Manchester City did the same thing in 2023. Some argued that this song being performed gave "life" to United, which they used as fuel for their comeback.
Montserrat and Freddie were a duo sent from heaven. In theory their voices shouldn’t gel together, but together they were truly magical. God rest their souls.
I've heard this hundreds of times throughout my life and it always chills me up. Freddie is one of the best male voices ever!!!!!!!! They loved and respected each other!

I remember that. Thinking how are they going to light the cauldron
No?
No WAY!
They're not!
They are!
Astounding.
I seem to remember...wasn't the archer seated in a wheelchair?
You are right Jamal. Freddie loved opera. And Montsy was his idol. He finally got up the nerve to ask her to sing together. They made an album and the rest is history. They loved each other so much. This was 3 years before he passed away. But he did what he always wanted to do now he can rest in peace.
Rock meets opera! Only our Freddie 💕 even while being extremely sick can create magic in your soul and she is an amazing opera singer. I can’t listen to this song enough. She passed away a couple of years ago.
Montserrat Caballé was her name, one of the greatest.
Friends called her Montsy
@@Danielik25 NO WAY
I was born in Barcelona and still live here.
I have tears in my eyes. What a stunning exhibition of vocal and orchestral magnificence.
What you just heard: Heaven, my friend.....Heaven.
Yes, according to the Queen documentary Freddie always wanted to bring Opera and ballett to the masses.
I always love it when someone listens to opera and enjoys it.
Same here
I'm not an opera fan, but this is just amazing. Thanks for reacting. Freddie and Montserrat were amazing together. What a gift to humanity!
Freddie adored opera, and as you say this was a perfect day for him (and my goodness he had some good days).
Peace, brother J.
She was a true fan of his as well and spoke so glowingly of the experience of working with him and how he was such a special person. They originally recorded this duet way before the Barcelona Olympic games in 1992 and Freddy did not live long enough to sing it at the games but a video recording was used during the opening ceremonies. Montserrat Caballe never officially retired and passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. May they both sing endless duets now in heaven.❤"

She died a little over 2 years ago, almost 27 years after Freddie.
We are all so fortunate that this is part of history to be discovered by future generations.
This was the first "Opera" song I liked. I still get goosebumps whenever I hear it
Me too
Bless him. Freddie was sick when he performed this. Freddie had a deep love, admiration, and respect for opera thus he created Bohemian Rhapsody.
Which is very much in the tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan.
Yes it was made the official Olympic song which took place in the summer of 1992, sadly Freddie had past away 7 months before it took place
A perfect marriage of Freddie's rock god voice and Montserrat's soaring soprano. I had forgotten just how good this was.
Thanks
THIS!! This makes me bawl like a baby EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I miss him terribly. Thank you!!
That wasn't just a song that was an experience !
Cabellá was such an amazing singer. Her performance of “O Mio Babbino Caro” is absolutely the best rendition of that song I’ve ever heard! Thanks for featuring her on your channel 🙏🏻
Written by Giacomo Puccini, cousin of my great grandfathet. Didn't know until I researched my adoptive parents. Nice find.
@@MrPooch1967 That’s awesome man! 👍🏻😄
sorry, a little correction, is Caballé, not Cabellá.
It's CABALLÉ. SHOW RESPECT, BITCH!
❤
There was nothing....NOTHING that Freddie Mercury couldn't sing! Nothing was too big for him to take on and nail. Rest in peace, legend.
Freddie loved the opera and he loved her. They sand a lot together.
When you said "goosebumps" near the beginning, I said "you just wait". I've always loved this song, it's amazing.
Montserrat and Freddie were a duo sent from heaven. In theory their voices shouldn’t gel together, but together they were truly magical. God rest their souls.
Freddie wrote the song for the Summer Olympics 1992 in Barcelona and in honour of his dear friend Montserrat who's hometown was Barcelona.
I've heard this hundreds of times throughout my life and it always chills me up. Freddie is one of the best male voices ever!!!!!!!! They loved and respected each other!
Ok, hands up for who would have loved to watch this live/when they recorded it?
Your reaction is exactly how I feel EVERY time I listen to these two angels singing together.
They were dear friends. This was Freddie’s dream to do an Opera! Beautiful collaboration with Montserrat ♥️
Barcelona, such a beautiful horizon.
Barcelona, like a jewel in the sun.
This song always puts a lump in my throat. It's just beautiful. Great Olympics as well.
The Opera is always part of Freddie. I have never seen this performance....marvelous!
Everything about this is.... outstanding, immense, stunningly beautiful. And that Freddie figure is SO cute!
Oh my God you played it!! I am so glad since I recommended it so many times. Montserrat is one if my favorite opera stars. It's pronounced just like it's written.
What sets Freddy apart is he puts his heart and soul into his perfomance!!
As many times as I have listened to this, it gives me goose bumps EVERY time
Not easy to hold your own with a classically trained opera singer. He did it! Bravo, and lucky us.
Not another front man from any other band could match Montserrat ,and her voice like Freddie.she died not that long ago,but Freddie died in 91 .makes me happy everyone I hear and see this performance.Respect my friend and keep safe.🤗
