She was a world famous legendary operatic soprano, and he loved her voice and wanted to meet her. They met briefly in early 1987 and hit it off. She was from Barcelona, and she asked that he write and record a song with her that would be used as the theme for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. This was the result. They ended up recording an entire album together, and his last live performance was with her. He was already ill, and apparently when she said she wanted him to sing this with her at the Olympics he told her he would be gone by then, and he was. Barcelona was replaced as the theme for the Games after Freddie died but was indeed used throughout the Olympic telecasts, including here ruclips.net/video/IzGCXdX6gig/видео.html at the beginning of the International Broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies. Side note: In case you don't remember it or want to see it again, if you skip ahead to about 2:42:00 this Olympics had pretty much the coolest and most spectacular cauldron-lighting ceremony EVER.

Spanish soprano, Montserrat Caballe was an operatic diva of the first order. Dubbed "La Superba" (the superb one) by the Italian public, she had an international career in concert and opera that started in the 1960's. Freddy was always an opera fan and specifically a fan of hers. The collaboration with her on this duet he said was a *dream come true". She was a true fan of his as well and spoke so glowingly of the experience of working with him and how he was such a special person. They originally recorded this duet way before the Barcelona Olympic games in 1992 and Freddy did not live long enough to sing it at the games but a video recording was used during the opening ceremonies. Montserrat Caballe never officially retired and passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. May they both sing endless duets now in heaven.❤

Yes, Brian had to finish the last verse of Mother Love because Freddie was too ill to come back to the studio again. It gives me chills when I listen to the power in Freddie's voice in the first 2 verses. He was facing his imminent death and yet his voice was so strong and dynamic. Probably one of the strongest people to ever live, facing such a horrible disease and signing his heart out until the bitter end. He will always be my hero.

I remember those days when my beautiful city was looking forward for the Olympic Games in 1992, we, all the people, felt so proud both, for Freddie Mercury writing this MASTERPIECE about Barcelona and for our great Montserrat Caballé, singing it with him. That period may be the happiest of my life. Lovely memories. VISCA BARCELONA!!!

Yes, if I remember right, they did this duet for the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain 1992. He was a true showman; he gave the audiences everything he had.

Opera singer Montserrat Caballe died in 2018, at the age of 85 in Barcelona.
The Spanish artist was renowned for her bel canto technique and her interpretations of the roles of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. She also achieved pop success with Freddy Mercury on Barcelona in 1987.
"Spanish soprano, Montserrat Caballe was an operatic diva of the first order. May they both sing endless duets now in heaven.❤"

Freddie Mercury loved opera. So it makes perfect sense for him to sing with a full blown operatic soprano, in Montserrat Caballé. Freddie was also really, really not an opera singer, and would never have claimed to be (operatic singing is a very specific controlled style, with no rasping of the voice). But he had incredible vocal range and power, so it does make perfect sense that once she'd realised that, Montserrat Caballé would want to sing with him.
The heartbreaking thing about this song was that, although it wasn't written for the Barcelona Olympics (it was originally released five years earlier), Freddie never lived to see it used as the theme for the games (which is was).

In 1999, the UEFA Champions League soccer final was played in Barcelona between Manchester United and Bayern Munich. In the pre-game ceremonies, Montserrat Caballe sang her part live, and a recording of Freddie played in the stadium. Many saw it as an omen that there would be some magic that night. Sure enough, there was...
Bayern Munich led 1-0 after an early free kick goal, and looked to have the trophy wrapped up. Suddenly, in stoppage time right before the match ended, Manchester United scored the tying goal. Then, about two minutes later, still in stoppage time, United won a corner kick. David Beckham played the ball in, then a header was hit down. Having come in off the bench, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stuck out his foot, and as it turned out, he hit it just well enough for the ball to go into the top corner of the net past legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The legendary call of "...And Solskjaer has won it!" still rings out in Manchester United lore. Sure enough, it was the winning goal. Bayern Munich players collapsed in disappointment when the ball went in, and the referee had to convince them to stand up.
Manchester United became the first English team to win what was called a "treble" - winning the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in the same season. Their main rival Manchester City did the same thing in 2023.
Some argued that this song being performed gave "life" to United, which they used as fuel for their comeback.
