The only thing more frustrating than just hearng a snap when you pull the trigger is hunting deer with a .58 caliber enfield rifled musket drawing a bead on a nice whitetail buck and hearing a snap when you pull the trigger, and see the cap fell off. the deer standing and watching you as you fumble for another cap then bolting at top speed as you start to place the cap on the nipple. you feel like wrapping the gun around the nearest tree
The Deer 🦌 said i got your CAP.....way before Jake Paul..NO CAP ....see what I done did here Dear?....lol ( No homo! twas necessary to demonstrate the refined comedic sharpness of my bored mind from whence comes hints of genius) stay blessed bro
Finally someone who shows it right how to load these pistols.. I got 2 of them by Pedersoli.. in mine i use .457 ball or even .460.. .451 is too small in mine , i think you should use as big as goes even If you need some effort to screw that barrel in. It improves the velocity very noticabley.I chrony mine around between 550 too 580 fps. Using 777 or very fine grain black Powder 3f Swiss
Fired mine yesterday. The Pedersoli Colt steel .44 molded 207 grain elongated ball, charged with 10g Goex FFFg, fired from 10 feet away at a 2 x 8 old and dry board that was used as a concrete form piece, the ball penetrated half an inch, bounced back and hit me in the upper thigh. Causing a slight bleeding injury. C r a p !
Mai sottovalutare i rimbalzi quando si ha a che fare con qualunque tipologia di armi da fuoco.Ti è finita bene che non è rimbalzata in faccia e soprattutto in un occhio.
I just bought one of these, it’s a used one got it in a twin set with another, and didn’t know if there was anything special I needed to do with it. Thank you for the video
7yrs after the video was uploaded it showed up in my suggested content. Great video and I’ve long wanted to get a black powder gun just never have. Semi auto guns are way too much fun and have not really invested in other types. Going to have to get one now.
Chris King - the charge is very small - about 12 grains by volume of FFFg Black powder or Pyrodex P. Just enough to fill the chamber and give a slight compression to the charge as the ball is put in place before screwing on the barrel.
Can't stress enough the importance of doing the measure by volume and never by weight. As some upon buying a muzzle loading bang stick only and not the proper equipment to load them may and have done before. Using things from home. Pyrodex is lighter by I want to say half . I forget the actual difference. But enough that in a Colt 1860 cap and ball revolver and it's replica versions. The cylinder will not even contain all the Pyrodex when weight is used. The inadvertent grenade build. Starts with upon reading the container and seeing the total weight of the powder in the container. Then assuming measuring the amounts used in firing are done in weight not volume. I enjoyed this video very much. I'd add a disclaimer though. As though not intended to be an authorized trainer. This day in age where a woman can be let drive after bringing a law suit because she was burned by coffee after buying it from McDonald's due to no warning of it being hot. No disclaimer could bring problems by the other. Brain challenged Semi human relatives of the aforementioned moron. Sorry to any morons but There isn't a word for her level of stupid. A Good Lawyer meaning crooked as a lightning bolt. Might just B.S. a judge into the thought of. No disclaimer implies one is teaching through video. Instead of being just a good person. So when Tommy toe tags family files a wrongful offing suit Because he used Military grade smokless smoke pole propellant. From the rounds he pulled the bullets ftom. Instead of A court order forbidding the moron from bringing anymore morons into the world they come after the video maker. I'm writing this tounge and cheek. But it's never a bad Idea to cover your butt. The fact the burned lipped lady was even allowed to do this speaks volumes about the state of our courts. If I were the judge in that case. The woman would of left by Taxi or cab. As I would of suspended her license untill a mental evaluation could be done. On the grounds if she didn't know coffee was indeed hot. Perhaps her ability to make other more important life or death decisions were beyond the scope of her mental abilities. So until this is known. I cannot in good conscience let her operate a motor vehicle. The life I save may be my own lol. Great lil shooter. I think I'm going to see about getting one as they look fun and also the perfect one to start a young adult on the fun of blasting crap into Oblivion. Lol thanks sir
I use 30 grains of fff black powder since it uses .454 cal so I figure it should be the same powder charge as other 44 cal weapons. I know people would disagree but black powder just so much safer than smokeless they won’t blow your gun up.
Took the Liege to the range. Fired it along with all my other pistols (Colt s Patent repeaters of holster, belt and pocket calibers). From the Liege (of which I named,- Master James Jim Bartholomew Hawkins -Spritsale-. Cabin boy from the Hispaniola) I fired round, Army/Dragoon/Picket elongated balls. From 1, 7 and 12 yards. All distances, one 1'' pine board was penetrated with the ball bouncing hard off the second board. The picket didn t grip the rifling and it went through the board sideways each time (3 fired). The Lieges favorite ball is the Army (204g cast from the 1860 Colt Army steel mold). This thing r e a l l y kicks too! If a lady were to produce this little pistol from her muff, she d really have to be good with it! It shoots high and left too. I had to hold it 3ft low and 3ft to the right to hit the target from 12 yards away. After 10 shots, the fouling from Pyrodex was great enough to where I had a hard time screwing the barrel tight (I do it by hand). After oiling the threads and wiping, it was shoot ready again. I lubricate it with olive oil. I place more than several drop on the ball before screwing the barrel. At one point I unintentionally short charged the chamber resulting in the round ball only penetrating the surface of the board from 7 yards. I am awaiting the arrival of black powder. I ll then go out with it again for more testing.
Just came across this video. Nice little pistol. I actually own a couple of original guns of this type from around 1830-1850. One of them looks exactly like this one but with a bit of scrol ornaments and a damast barrel. They were made in Europe, mainly in Belgium, UK and frand Liege by the thousands. In those days, a lot of gentleman would not go out without something like this tucked away in a boot or coat. Might not be a very powerful gun by any standard, but up close they could still do some serious damage.
Design flaw: they should have made the outside of the barrel a hexagon instead of rounded! Then we could use a normal wrench to tighten it from the outside. We wouldn't need a special tool that might eventually scratch the rifling.
the original Belgian design from the mid 1800s were all round barrels. But they had a nub on the underside of the barrel used for engaging the wrench. I find one of those thin rubber jar openers work great without messing with the rifling.
My current 'Muff Masters' are two Colt s Patent repeaters of pocket calibre, 4''. One with rammer lever attached and the other without. Firing many more than several times per each, without reloading. Breech loading and without the need of patching or wadding, the ball hermetically seals. Carrying an elongated or round ball of 90- 150 to the pound, through a spiral grooved bore, they carry to 25 yards nicely, they are quite formidable.
Kinda funny :) Yeah, many governments don't want they citizens become armed... thats because of an old rule - free people owns weapon (or have right to own it), slaves don't. In my country (38mln citizens) you just have to be 18 to own & carry sth like we see here, so basically we have free access to firing weapons, and accidents and law violations where cap&ball guns were used can be counted on one hands fingers, yearly. We have free access to firing weapons and people still don't want to shoot each other, whoa, how is that possible :)
I m still firing mine. I really like it. Something I discovered. Packing powder into the chamber instead of only pouring it into the chamber makes a signifigant difference. Meaning,- only bouncing off a 2'' fir board at 12 yards over that of penetrating the board beyond the surface. I pour the powder and compress it with my finger and then place the ball and so on. Btw, I use a 'Richmond' style elongated ball of 190g. It performs b e t t e r than a round ball. Point of aim is always 20'' low and 10'' right with how I fire it. At 50 yards, the point of aim is right on. Meaning a 30'' group. Heavily denting corrugated steel. Also I don t use that tool. I ditched it q u i c k . The barrel can be hand placed easily.
The barrel wrench doubles as a nipple wrench to and I put 44 cal revolver Wads in my pair of this guns it reduces the fowling in the rifled barrel and for me it makes it easier to insert the barrel wrench a lot of people think revolver wads stop chain firing it doesn’t their purpose is to reduce fowling in the barrel
As of 23 Aug, one each Liege Deluxe derringer with walnut case is arrived! From Pedersoli in Italy via Dixie Gun Works. I ordered it 5 July. I was wondering about the Italy holiday time in July delaying things. As it was, the oder was completed in only a month and a half! I have nt fired it yet. I have been testing it otherwise,- I use balls casted from the Colt molds. 5 different round/elongated types. The 'Picket' ball from the Walker mold actually fits quite well in the liege. So far, I can hand turn the barrel into place. seems the balls are about .452 or so. I have yet to try fitting the round/elongated from the steel .44 mold from Pedersoli. I ll do it. I drive all the balls through the bore. All have good friction/rifling grip. , ,.
Its great and suprisingly accurate, last time I was n a shooting range, I shot with few pistols and submachine guns, and the most accurate shot was take with that black powder derringer
These historical, one-shot pocket pistols were typically inexpensive, easy-to-manufacture, easy-to-use, and convenient. Yet at the end of the day, these one-shot, usually small caliber pocket pistols served essentially as last-ditch, emergency personal protection. Given just one shot, the primary intention was deterrence, inducing an assailant to back down and retreat. No one should be tangling with an assailant armed with a knife or club or any other expedient or improvised weapon. Shooting the assailant was the last and least-desired option, given the fact of no secondary shot. The defender might miss, even at close range due to nervousness, panic, fear, or distraction. Second, small caliber balls had little assurance of stopping an assailant immediately unless the brain was targeted. In this video, the Pedersoli pocket pistol shoots a .44 caliber or .45 caliber ball, a far more effective man-stopper, especially at near point-blank range. Still, the lack of a follow-up back-up shot made one-shot pocket pistols a risky gambit. But at the end of the day, any defensive firearm is far better than NO firearm when you most need it and that's why for a very long time there was a big civilian market for very small, convenient, pocket pistols. During the American Civil War, soldiers on both sides sometimes privately purchased one-shot, small pocket pistols for last-ditch, emergency defense if they could not reload their muzzle-loading muskets fast enough to stop an on-charging enemy infantryman pointing his bayonet-fixed muzzle-loader rifle like a lethal pike.
Back in the day, this little 'Muff Master' was quite the defender! Can you imagine a lady accosted, prodicing this point blank?! That would be a bad day for the bad n. Oh you know it would! , and that s true enough! BTW, I m wanting the engraved/checkered stock version.
Lovely little italian pistol, almost an exact copy of an ammazzagatti (or mazzagatti in some dialects, literally means "cat killer"). Only difference between this and an original is this has a pop out trigger, an original has a normal trigger and trigger guard (most of them have, a few got the same pop out trigger)
Just found the ball. The nose of it is really bent over where it tried to root its way into the board. The half inch hole is askew too. the swaged flat base of the ball seems to be what cut my thigh.
it's also a good idea to grease the ball before seating it on the powder charge to lube the chamber/barrel. Crisco & paraffin 8:1 works nicely. Occasionally the fired cap will be lightly wedged into the hammer face. Remove it before the next shot or you'll have a misfire. Finally, use the cocked hammer as your sight. I found that the cocked hammer centered on your target at say 15 feet will hit within 5" of point of aim rather consistently. If you're firing at a target more than 15 feet, you misunderstand for what the design of this pistol was made.
Nice. I have used with or without Barrell just to use primers instead of a cap gun. Mine would not ignite pyrodex so I don't know if it was bad batch but with barrel off you can see primer flash. Locally only one place sells Real black powder and it's $40 a pound. But it is a fun gun.
Hello Pal! I'm from Bavaria (Souern Germany). Dikar is now Ardesa - since a few years. I bought the Ardesa Derringer Philadelphia, which is exactly like this one. Now my question:Can you tell me how long can I have this weapon loaded with Black Powder, felt und of course the Lead Ball with being able to ahoot it before it gets wet/rusty and unusable? Please help me! Thank you very much! Cheers!
If the gun is clean and kept dry It can stay loaded for a very long time, even years. But it must be kept free of moisture, and the wad or patch if used, could not be lubed or it may cause powder contamination. The cap can be wax coated to seal it - a practice used in hunting in wet environments. However, the safety of doing so would be of primary concern for many reasons.
Klaus D. I have a "great gun derringer" from Czech Republic and I kept it loaded for 2 years in my house and then in Keller... after 2 years when I shoot it the first barrel went off with a little bit of delay and the second barrel needed 2 caps to set it off..The pistol was held in a little bit of humidity in Keller but I'm sure the charges didn't get straight off because I forgot to clean the nipples of oil.
Klaus D. - as snowlothar said, they can be kept loaded for years, if kept dry. I do use a dry lube wad, and I seal the nipples with beeswax. Came across an article a while back that claimed this same thing was done (sealing the nipples and chambers with beeswax), by drovers who had to swim across streams and rivers on a daily basis. With this screw barrel gun, I'd bet you could put a lube wad in front of the ball and help ensure a good seal without damaging the powder.
@@geffreybolster3780 no, it was produced as a percussion. Look at catalog of 1910-11 page 158 dspace.nplg.gov.ge/bitstream/1234/52632/1/Orujie_Torgovago_Doma_Falkovski.pdf
Like your little film, real nice little pistol. Would you estemate how many grains of powder goes into that little chamber ? I live in Sweden that got the hardest gun-laws in the world. I have one of theese but original made abaout 1880 or something. If the gun is pre 1890, we may own them and shoot them. But a new-made Pedersoli like yours reqires licens and permit. Nearly impossible to get, so we bay old guns and shoot them. Sweden is a crazy country ! Greatings from " Gunslinger Johansson " .
Firing it from 12 yards at a pine board target, 7 boards deep spaced 1 1/4'', the ball went through the first board, bouncing hard off the second. 1 board penetration was considered lethal back in the day.
Would it be possible to screw a longer Barrel on and use it as a Muzzleloading Shotgun or might it be too dangerous because of the larger load of Black Powder? 🤔
Thank you for your video! I have a question (maybe silly, so I 'm sorry in advance), can you in theory reload this pistol without removing the barrel? Or bullet will not fit in?
Yes, but your results may be less than desired as it is rifle powder. Less energy and poorer ignition. I would not recommend pistol powder in a rifle, but rifle powder in a pistol should be safe if you don't mind lower performance.
Hey there all shooters of this fine piece. I get a,- one pine board penetration at 10 yards. I fired at a soft cover book from 3 yards and the ball only heavily dented the book. Tearing 25 pages (to the 50 page number). Any other shoot reports out there regarding penetration effectiveness?
Interesting. I have an octagonal barrel percussion cap pistol marked Field, London. Slight wear in the threads means the flats no longer align. Turning it to the next flat is not an option as the foresight would not align. What to do?
Hi! I'm actually new to blackpowder but very interested in one of these kits! Does it come with everything you were using in this video? Or just the things you need to build it? If it doesn't come with it, where and what do you recommend? Enjoyed the video! Thank you
+Corey Henderson You only get the pistol. All finishing supplies and items need to fire it must be bought separate. These items are usually available at your local gun shop. I prefer real black powder, but it usually has to be ordered anymore, and there is a hazmat fee with a minimum, the smallest I have found to be 5 pounds. Pyrodex is usually available locally and will work fine in this gun.
I picked up something similar at a car boot sale but its missing a trigger. I cleaned it up and worked out the load - 11.3 gr of black powder behind a ±105 gsm round ball, so not inconsiderable at point blank range. I can't fire it yet of course, but does anyone have an idea of the ballistics?
Did you buy the kit? the receiver seems too shiny that it looks almost too attractive, I bought mine assembled and it has a case hardened receiver, not very attractive in my opinion.
I was originally wanting a flintlock version. Actually, the inspiration for me to want one was the scene in Treasure Island where Long John Silver gives James that pistol. 'A light charge of powder and a heavy ball works best for a touchy craft such as this here.'
He is using 45.1 rounds or 54.1 rounds? Sorry not a native speaker right here ✌🏻🥴 And why didnt he covers up the round or something like that? That way the round could fall out while transportation right? 🤔🥴🤔
Just a lil thought Here how many people have blown themselves up threading the cap on a pipe bomb because there's powder on the threads just think about it
There is not a standard for percussion cap sizing. They are inexpensive so try a few to see what works best. Remington # 10 fit well for me. The CCI #10 are a bit snug and CCI #11 are a bit loose, but both will work.

That would most certainly be frustrating. It is a fun gun for deer hunting though, took one with mine last year.

Really cool Derringer. I have never seen a screw barrel. Your fit and finish is very nice.
Chris King - the charge is very small - about 12 grains by volume of FFFg Black powder or Pyrodex P. Just enough to fill the chamber and give a slight compression to the charge as the ball is put in place before screwing on the barrel.

It’s true what you say, with modern muzzle loaders right on the barrel and in the booklet it comes with BLACK POWDER ONLY or a substitute powder

very useful/educational, thank you. I am somewhat experienced in the black powder world and this was still useful to me

It's not rifling. It's just grooves for the tool. No twist.
Thank you for this video I have been looking for information on just this derringer.

I personally have a Philadelphia Derringer, but I still love these little guns. If I ever get the chance, would love to get my hands on one of these
In New Zealand, this is classed as an assault weapon.

I mean this thing is so simple you could make it with handtools or some very basic powertools
I bought this as a "kit" ... can't wait to build it
Its been 8 months since you posted this comment- did you build it? If so, did it go well?
also curious, I've heard really bad things about this brand and a few others. Lots of inconsistencies in build quality
@@blackleaf_yt he doesnt answer. it probably didnt go well xD
Now thats a damn cool little Derringer. I want one
My Dad had one of those.
It had a notch carved in the stock.
When he dumped out the wad and powder, the powder lit after all those years.
Thanks for mentioning the ball diameter of .451.

'A heavy ball and a light charge of powder works best with a touchy little craft such as this.' -Long John Silver to Master Hawkins-
How loud is it compared to a modern pistol?
Excellent video, I enjoyed it. I learned a lot of new thing to improve my shooting thanks so much.
I want to buy a used 36 or 40 cal. Liegi derringer. 319-396-8225 aschbrenner@yahoo.com
Very cool design, not seen that before. Thanks for that. Easy to unload too I assume?
The barrel wrench doubles as a nipple wrench to and I put 44 cal revolver Wads in my pair of this guns it reduces the fowling in the rifled barrel and for me it makes it easier to insert the barrel wrench a lot of people think revolver wads stop chain firing it doesn’t their purpose is to reduce fowling in the barrel
Fun little gun. Would suggest squeezing cap to slightly crimp it. Also have the option of using musket cap & nipple for better ignition.

Very nice work! Thank you.
The back in the day heater muff gun
it's also a good idea to grease the ball before seating it on the powder charge to lube the chamber/barrel.
But it is a fun gun.
thats a cool looking little thing.
DID THAT SQUIRREL JUST FLIP ME OFF!!!
*Pulls out Pedersoli*
Great information. Planning to get ne myself. Thank you.
You should edit this to show how to clean and maintain it - like what needs to be oiled etc.
Good video. Thanks for sharing.
What era were these popular? Love this little unique popper
1860s -1870s?
I looked for this info. Seems it was from 1850.

Do you mean that the production contnued into the cartridge era as a cartridge (fixed ammo) type until 1910?
@@geffreybolster3780 no, it was produced as a percussion. Look at catalog of 1910-11

I like pedersoli ...overall they make very good firearms
Like your little film, real nice little pistol. Would you estemate how many grains of powder goes into that little chamber ? I live in Sweden that got the hardest gun-laws in the world. I have one of theese but original made abaout 1880 or something. If the gun is pre 1890, we may own them and shoot them. But a new-made Pedersoli like yours reqires licens and permit. Nearly impossible to get, so we bay old guns and shoot them. Sweden is a crazy country ! Greatings from " Gunslinger Johansson " .
This little pistol hold 12g of powder. The pistol is patterned after a model from 1850. I fire elongated balls from mine, and it likes them real well.
I would love to have one of these. 👍
Must be uncomfortable a lady carrying that in her muff
Is it .44 cal in 451 diameter? And do you think at least, at point blank, could this take out a coyote in a trap?
Yes it's one 44 cal. with 451 or 454 two size you can use both on this derringer it's like a bullet it's a 45 colt with three size's .
Lol there was a concealed carry ad before this video started🤣 concealed carry in 1856.
Let me ask you can I use Pyrodex RS to shoot 451 & 454 out of this Pedersoli .44 caliber Derringer .
Yes, but your results may be less than desired as it is rifle powder. Less energy and poorer ignition. I would not recommend pistol powder in a rifle, but rifle powder in a pistol should be safe if you don't mind lower performance.

And why - is it safe to put pressure on the gunpowder with your hand over the plugged muzzle?
Seems you're getting a lot of 'muff' jokes on this.😂
I have a matching set of two cool little guns kind of hard to aim
Hey there all shooters of this fine piece. I get a,- one pine board penetration at 10 yards. I fired at a soft cover book from 3 yards and the ball only heavily dented the book. Tearing 25 pages (to the 50 page number). Any other shoot reports out there regarding penetration effectiveness?
Interesting.
I have an octagonal barrel percussion cap pistol marked Field, London. Slight wear in the threads means the flats no longer align. Turning it to the next flat is not an option as the foresight would not align. What to do?
I'd almost be tempted to smear a smidgen of Crisco on the top or sides of that ball before threading on the barrel.

I tried one in .36 (~9mm). Very hard to aim and hit a 🎯 target, mostly you fire much to high and hit a ceiling in the range.
How do you clean it?
Looks cool
Great video.
Got fully childish , as soon as I heard muff-gun . 😂
Good job!

cool wee thing
Is it possible to load a cone bullet backwards down a rifled barrel?
Then if you dont wanna remove the barrel every time?
Great vid! Where from did you get the tool you used to tighten the barrel?
It is included with the pistol.
see some antique with a Key put over the Barrel to tighten!(Safer)
shoots at 3:33 like so others can see
So it basically a mini queens anne? But percussion?
Hey what's the name of the piece where the diavolo is put It's from a valve or something
Did you buy the kit? the receiver seems too shiny that it looks almost too attractive, I bought mine assembled and it has a case hardened receiver, not very attractive in my opinion.
My 1855 screw barrel pistol has an octagonal barrel instead of a round barrel and a tool.
is it possible to use Pyrodex pellets in this?
is this good for self defense
Thanks for the video. What ball diameter you use to load this little guy...451 or .454?
.451
@@benzo430 Thanks.
Cool! So the trigger deploys like a Colt Patterson
Wish they'd do a flintlock version.
I was originally wanting a flintlock version. Actually, the inspiration for me to want one was the scene in Treasure Island where Long John Silver gives James that pistol. 'A light charge of powder and a heavy ball works best for a touchy craft such as this here.'
The originals are quite common where i come from. ;))
How were these carried? Half cocked with a percussion cap seated? Do the percussion caps come loose?
I found one of these at a local pawn shop... in a case that looked like a closed book. They gave it to me for $15.00 .
Sempre tem um otário falando isso, ta vendo placa ai
Yeah right
Chris,
Where can I get the screw barrel tool . I have two of these derringers one single and one double barrel . Both very old .
Did you ever find an answer?
Thanks for the video. I have one of these. It needs a replacement nipple. Do you know the thread type and where I might find one?
Standard threads just like any Uberti Colt style. I replaced the cone in mine with a 'Dragoon' cone. Purchased from DGW. Easy.
He is using 45.1 rounds or 54.1 rounds? Sorry not a native speaker right here ✌🏻🥴
And why didnt he covers up the round or something like that? That way the round could fall out while transportation right? 🤔🥴🤔
0.451
Very nice! Thanks for sharing 👍.
Just a lil thought Here how many people have blown themselves up threading the cap on a pipe bomb because there's powder on the threads just think about it
Yes, its nonsense. You need a spark...just pressure is not enough.
Be careful inserting the wrench into the barrel.
It could lead to dings on the crown, affecting accuracy.
Right! I ditched that tool before fast! As it is, the barrel turns easily by hand.
LOL. There is no "accuracy" with these guns.
Ive never seen a more deadly loading process.
What's "deadly" about it?
3:11 i don't have to finger it xD xD xD
What primer are you using?
There is not a standard for percussion cap sizing. They are inexpensive so try a few to see what works best. Remington # 10 fit well for me. The CCI #10 are a bit snug and CCI #11 are a bit loose, but both will work.
Thank you very much! You just saved me a hassle.
