    Wow this is hands down the most detailed and well thought out bow drill video advice anywhere! Iv read all the bushcraft, survival and woodsman books and this just helped out that much more. Love the little details you explain. What a difference. We miss you brother you are fun to watch and a true woodsman with minimal gear. LOVE THIS. Thank you once again.

    Lots of videos out there that are very basic about bow drill fires. Lots of videos makers seem to not want to make videos longer than 4-8 minutes. I'm glad you made a good detailed video on this subject. I hope this encourages more Bushcrafters to make longer videos. Thanks for the detail in this video.

    I have the same difficulties with spruce in my area (Picea abies). Tried it 4 times and it never worked. Even tried it with a male friend with a lot of power. I will avoid spruce from now. Cant believe that in some survival books people have listed it as a good bow drill material.

    • @StayPrimal
      @StayPrimal  8 лет назад +2

      I know it is incredible, I came to realize that when it comes to friction fire in survival books, information is really limited or innacurate. The vast majority of them just know nothing about it and practiced very little, as it take such a dedication to get good at this.
      The only one that I really really respect is Cody Lundin, he once said : Friction fire is not easy, and it never will be. It is extremely complex and that is what makes it fascinating. It take a life time to master this art

      Stay Primitive My Friend I'd love to mail you a sage brush set or two. I think you'd love it. It's all I ever used. I taught the skill to over 900 students using sage. Twenty years ago I used to crank these out all the time for fun and competitions/races. Now I'm older and I am trying to learn to use other materials. I still have a black fir spindle from a branch that never ever got a coal for me. Now I know not to use that. Thank you for your video. I learned a lot from you:)

    Yesterday, I must have had the dumbest luck ever. I got an ember on the fourth attempt. I've never tried making friction fire before in my life. Hazel spindle, birch heart board. I thought to myself, man this was so easy. I'll get some kindling together and lets make a proper fire. And then nothing. 50 attempts, many more holes, absolutely nothing. After watching this video I can see all the errors I've made: crooked spindle, too thick heart-board, short and too straight bow... and above all, more practice. Thank you Cedric. Thank you very much for the excellent lessons.

      Hahaha. Thx for sharing your experience.
      Yeah I know exactly what you mean, sometimes I tell myself bahhh, my last 300 friction fire were success, not a single fail. That is it, I mastered this art I will never fail again.
      Then BAM, mother nature waits me at the corner and I fail 20 in a row, for no apparent reason. This is so frustrating sometimes ;) That is what make friction fire so fascinating though

    cedrik, i really love your videos. they're amazingly informative (i got my first bowdrill ember after watching a couple of your videos almost immediately, before watching them i struggled and thought i'd never get it), and you seem like a great guy (i cant emphasize that enough).
    i hope to see occasional uploads in the future.
    but fahrenheit and inches? you're french, the creators of the metric system, the best measurement system! what are you doing? lol, just kidding.
    your videos are great and make me happy, but most of all remind me that no matter what, i can find happiness a couple km out of town in the woods.
    you even come up in conversation sometimes when i and my 2 brothers are around a fire: 'how cool would it be if cedrik were here?' is something that's been said, and we all nod in agreement.

      Hi Demon im so sorry for the time of the answer, all these message has never been notified in my inbox :(
      I use about 3-4 foot of paracord on the bow.
      I really dont remember the pants ... just normal winter pants I believe my friend.
      Thx !

    Great video.. detailed.. But I still have a question. The woods around my home are mostly spruce and fir mixed pretty evenly. When looking for a dead standing fir (no bark) I'm not always sure I got the right tree, they grow side by side here. I know the fir usually has less lower branches but not always. Are there other ways to tell the difference by just looking? Thanks

    I use tree limbs for the spindle and hearthboard. The spindle is only finger wide and the hearth two fingers wide. The bow is thumb wide long as my arm and springy. The speed and pressure is light and fast.

    Hi Cedric.
    I'm French but will use English in order to share.
    First, your ultimate bow drill guide is exceptional!
    I mean it: the amount and quality of details, all properly supported by the video is simply amazing. Keep posting, man, this is what I - we - need.
    I have two comments:
    1. I am impressed by the fact you always practice with zero friction and as a result no sound when you use the bow. You explain it all but still... By comparison my bow drill is way to noisy. I meant there if you keep changing the downward pressure until there is visible results in the form of smoke or kept it the same constantly instead?
    2. You listed conifers as reference for wood types (I took notes about them all!) but could you suggest deciduous trees as well? Again, you explain why in the video. But that would help.
    You are in Canada, Quebec, somewhere? Just curious. You don't seem to mind the cold or the snow much.
    Again, congratulations, much appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Patnbone.

      Hi Patrick Merci pour ton commentaire :)
      1: Yes Denward pressure and speed is very important ,but the noise come from 2 main area : The handling block. and the tip of the drill. These sounds will be more present with hardwood or wood that is humid. You want to make sure to do these steps in order to prevent unnecessary friction and eliminate sound, or reduce it at least lol. Every 2-3 attempt of making an ember, remove a small layer on all the circumference of the tip of the drill - the tip might be a little bit to tight for the hole of the board and the sound come from the friction on the side of the hole.
      Also, you want to make a nice sharp point on the upside tip of the drill every attempt to make en ember, plus, this is very important, change hole in the handling block every 2 attempt. As the tip of the drill digs in the handle, the friction added can be very big and also, the sound is very likely to come from there.
      2 : Sure ! I made a little video to identify my favorite species, both conifer and deciduous, for a bow drill set.

      Yes I from Québec, Sherbrooke
      Hope it help,
      Cedrik

    Wow thx bec in going into the wilderness for 3 weeks and I needed to know how to make fire I would use roots for bow?

    • @StayPrimal
      @StayPrimal  8 лет назад

      Definitively, roots, especially spruce and balsam fir roots are so easy to make, very abundant and require very little time to make as well. Find a quarter inch roots with a '' Y '' in it. Pull on each roots (from the Y), that will split the roots perfectly in half. These make incredible cordage man !

      Its a OKC Ranger 5 inch. I had a 6 inch before but ... was a bit long for nothing, 5 inch is just amazing, especially friction fire. But I done shelter and all kind of bushcraft, 6 inch was often too long for nothing

    When making the natural fire what did you use for corsage for the bow can you plz make s video on that?

    • @StayPrimal
      @StayPrimal  8 лет назад

      With the hand drill cordage is not necessary. Actually it CAN be very effective with the ''thumb loop'' method, but I did not need that. I have several video on bow drill fire without modern tools on my channel, then you can see how I worked it.
      That said, these video are a few years old, nowadays I would not necessarily use the very same technique. I should make a new all natural bow drill video

    Merci Cédrik, avec l'aide de ton expérience et des nombreuses heures que tu as mis dans tes vidéos... J'ai réussi du premier coup à partir un feu la semaine dernière!! quelle belle sensation de créer du feu de cette façon. Une question (possible que tu en as déjà parlé...) Quelle corde utilises-tu? (J'avais 3 types donc 2 ont brisées avec la friction corde-corde vis-à-vis la loop sur le spindle)
    (Google Translate) : Thanks Cedric, with your experience and hours you put in your videos ... I managed to make a fire last week... the first time!! what a great feeling to create fire that way. One issue (likely you've already talked about that...) What chord do you use? (I have 3 types.... two have broken with the rope-rope friction near the loop on the spindle)

      Salut !
      La corde c'est de la paracord 550, disponible dans tous les bon Canadian tires ou magains de plein air.
      Oui le point sensible de la corde est a la twist du spindle. Si l'angle est pas parfait une grande friction est additionné, ce qui brise la corde rapidement.
      un autre chose a faire tres attention est quand la corde glisse sur le spindle, ca produit une grande chaleur sur la corde qui fond et qui se brise avec la friction

    GREAT Teacher. I did find myself wondering, in the all natural fire, you broke open your hearth board. But you drilled on the outside ( cambium side ) and not the inner side. Just an observation, made me wonder. ?

    • @StayPrimal
      @StayPrimal  8 лет назад

      +Mitchell Woodhouse
      Great observation !
      Working with the inner wood only apply to Deciduous. Conifer, especially balsam fir, spruce, cedar do not require such process. You can work without removing cambium.
      Great observation again

    how to make a friction by friction....

  • @BrianWood
    @BrianWood 9 лет назад +2

    Maybe it is a good idea to have a nice spindle pre made and keep it with you.

      +Brian Wood
      Well it all depend on people. Keeping a set and using the same one all the time wont give you the knowledge on what species to pick, in the good decomposition state. That is in my opinion what took me the longer time to understand. Also dealing with the freshly harvest wood give completely different result than a dry set.
      That said, most people just want to enjoy making a friction fire from time to time and do not really enjoy dealing with all the complication and difficulty, than I would say yes bring a set.
