The timing of this video. I’ve been watching some of his films lately and it’s easy to forget he’s actually British. He pulled off an American accent really well. One of the true greats that deserves more recognition.
I keep forgetting that Bob Hoskins' was British, because in Who Framed Roger Rabit he sounded very American, it was almost too perfect. RIP to this legend.
Always watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit when I was a kid. The toons are amazing, but it's always Bob Hoskins who I've always looked up. Eddie Valiant is the hero to us 80s & 90s kids, in spite of his flaws but we always cheer him when he stood by Roger Rabbit's side or took on Judge Doom and his Weasels.
RIP Bob. It’s a shame his career got stone cold after the Mario movie and took 6 years to make a comeback with Felicia’s journey. Brilliant and severely underrated
I was lucky enough to have met Bob Hoskins when he came to Secaucus, New Jersey to promote this film. Twenty Four Seven was being shown as part of a NJ film series. When they showed this film, Bob Hoskins was the special guest. It was probably within a a day or 2 of Bob Hoskins being on Conan or it could have been the same day. He was super nice to everyone in the audience. I got his autograph and I actually got to shake his hand. It was funny that when he walked out of the movie into the main lobby and was walking towards the exit, people who were coming into the lobby would do double takes when they saw him. They were coming to see a movie and they did not expect to see an actual movie star walking by. It was amazing watching this film and then as soon as it finished, they introduced Bob Hoskins who came down the side aisle to the front. Bob Hoskins was even nicer in person then when you see him in the movies. Just a nice, regular guy who happened to be an extremely talented actor. Rest in peace Mr. Hoskins. His daughter wrote a very nice book about her father.
Brian De Palma got a good heart. Still payed Bob for his time. Reminds me of days when i would turn up for shift and if they didnt need me. They would pay me half a days wages just for turning up and send me home. You wont get that kind of appreciation from employers these days. Time and a half on weekends, Christmas bonus, a bonus on top of the Christmas bonus that went up by a small percentage for every year you remained employed with the company. Those were good days.
Bob Hoskins is an actor that any younger movie fan should absolutely go and check out his work you will see why he is so appreciated and you won't regret watching a single one of his films.

He said he loved doing the film Hook🪝 because he got to do his own voice! He was always playing American characters or if he did do British it was mostly the proper British accent.
Hook is one of my favourite films! He actually reprised his role as Smee (albeit a very different Smee) years later in a miniseries called 'Neverland'.
There’s no such thing as a “British” accent. Bob had an English accent, or more accurately a London accent. If you were to travel for 30-60 minutes from London in any direction, the accent will be noticeably different. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all British countries, but they don’t have the same accent.
Bob Hoskins always played his characters with a certain humility and humanity that was quite (I think) unique. His bad guys had a vulnerable side and his good guys were flawed. He is much missed.
What a great guy. When Roger Rabbit came out, I was living in West Germany, the film was dubbed, and I remember wondering how Bob had possibly pulled off an American accent. But he did.
@@Jeremy_theGent he was great as Mario- when I was a kid we went to see Mario Bros in the theatre- I really thought he was from Brooklyn, and my mom is born and raised in Brooklyn and he fooled her too! I didn’t find out until decades later that he was British

Both Bob Hoskins and Robert De Niro starred in the movie Brazil back in 1985, two years before The Untouchables. But they didn’t share scenes together so I don’t know if they ever met
I didn't even know he was British. Seen him in so many American movies with Northeastern American accents, I thought he was American. Never thought to look his background up or interviews.
Such a legend. I forgot he's no longer with us. I'll always remember him (as everyone should) as Smee in Hook, but I also have a fond memory of his voice acting as Teddy in 'The Forgotten Toys.' "EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE FAMILY... LOVES... YUMMY!" xD

Wow. I mostly know bob hoskins from roger rabbit, and a movie called heart condition, and another called shattered. I never knew he was English. I always thought in the movie hook that he was doing a fake accent. Lol.
Imagine an English interviewer saying to DeNiro lets talk about your accent. What's it like when you work with Pacino because he has the same accent .... If you speak English but are not English then its you with the weird accent.
If you break your collar bone there's nothing to hold your shoulder from falling down round your waist.. I've also busted a knuckle and that's a fight stopper requiring surgery.

he died at age of 40
Fully agreed and as I saw this I'm like - I need to go watch more of his work this man was fantastic

Come on, though... You can't forget about "Smee?! Smee's me!!!"
I remember used to watch that movie in my childhood
He was English until he played mario then we disowned him so now he’s yours 👌🏻😆

Unleased was a great film too
But seriously, Bob would have been a magnificent Capone!
Glad he got a little money out of it for his troubles. 👍
Could see it. He & Stephan Graham have similarities. He made a great Capone on Boardwalk Empire.
Would've been bloody great, sadly he was taken from us too soon 😢 hell of an actor.
Robert De Niro played him well but he would've nailed it.
RIP Bob. It’s a shame his career got stone cold after the Mario movie and took 6 years to make a comeback with Felicia’s journey. Brilliant and severely underrated
that maybe the case yes, but as a Kid, I freaking loved that movie. I still have a soft spot for the Mario Brothers movie.
Long Good Friday is brilliant, ending scene is one of the best bit of subtle acting

In the '80s, Hoskins was _X-Men_ writer Chris Claremont's dream pick to play Wolverine. He could've done it.
Bless Bob Hoskins, always a true gentleman who never forgot his roots...and a fine fine actor 🎬
Also a man who was a fine socialist

An utter legend. THE LONG GOODBYE FRIDAY is a barnstorming performance
That's how I found him. Young Pierce Bronson with his original Irish accent & the lovely Queen herself, Helen Mirren.
It’s “The Long Good Friday”.
@@MrTibster The Long Good Friday and The Long Goodbye are both great films though 😬

I watched Mona Lisa for the first time on TCM a few weeks ago.
great films

Definitely his two best performances, he really gets the room to shine in those.
I absolutely love the contrast of Bob being such a rough and tumble guy at the same time such a beautiful artist.

Next thing you’re going to tell me, Hugh Laurie or that guy from Homeland are English too.
“The Long Good Friday” is one of the great British gangster flicks.
Unleased was a great film too
I loved this man, he was the perfect super Mario and who framed Roger Rabbit was superb. But his grittier crime and mob films were where he shined
Never, since Damian Lewis, have I been so surprised to discover that an actor I thought was American is actually British.
I wish they went with Bob Hoskins for Capone, he'd be perfect. I always thought De Niro looked a bit out of place in that movie.
Disagree, De Niro was scary as hell in that part. He nailed it
What a legend, Mona Lisa and LGF are some of the best British films ever made!
Thank you so much for posting this. Bob Hoskins was as cool as they come. Harold Shand, George, Eddie Valiant, Mario... you name it.
If I see another "underrated" comment I think I'm going to barf. People should engage their brains before posting nonsense.
What a great guy. When Roger Rabbit came out, I was living in West Germany, the film was dubbed, and I remember wondering how Bob had possibly pulled off an American accent. But he did.
It’s amazing
Hopkins would've been a perfect Al Capone
Even damn near looks like him. It would've been the most perfect casting.
De Niro nailed it
He was a very jolly English actor who does a great job putting on a fake Brooklyn accent. Underrated actor ever and may he Rest in Peace.
I became a huge fan of Bob Hoskins after seeing him in Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' in the late 70's.
Yes.
The world has never been the same since he left us. 💔
He would have been perfect as Capone.
We Miss You Bob Hoskins
Wow. Just wow. He was casted as Mario in a movie years ago with John Leguizamo. And now Chris Pratt was just recently cast to play Mario.
I liked the casting of the Super Mario movie, but the script, the direction and everything else was insanely wrong.
Probably the only time Les Battersby got a shout out on US TV.
Top Actor. Great character. Great accent. Rest in peace.

Bob Hoskins had one of the most relaxing voices of all time.
I like the way he talks
It's not fair there's very few interviews about his other roles. Loved him in Brazil, Hook and made a tiny cameo in Spice World.
He also played J Edgar Hoover in Nixon
I get wanting De Niro, who wouldn't? But Hoskins is an absolute dead ringer for Al Capone, it feels like it was the part he was made for.
I think of the long good friday as one of the top 10 best gangster films of all time.
Hoskins and Michael Caine worked together in Mona Lisa. Great movie.
