Never forgot the overnight cabin on the Gold Coast MotoRail, didn't sleep a wink. Stared out the window all night from my pillow, age 12. Locos were a 44 & 422 both Tuscan. If I could have bought a 44 due for scrap, I'd love just having it sit on a property. Sure I'm not alone on that. (I'd live in a 'sleeper car' behind it too)
I love the limestone yoyo footage, particularly at the beginning showing them running the Berrima branch out towards Blue Circle... It's hardly changed in 30 years aside from paper train order replacing the staff working that i believe used to operate. The line still looks the same today, and still done using the same CHS (NPZH/NPIH) ex-coal hopper wagons, but usually pulled by a pair of 81's now. I'd love to have been on the job 30 years ago when the Alcos were still working the stone trains in the highlands... It's a nice part of the world in which to work on the rail
I couldn’t look at the the end it broke my heart watching my favourite trains the 44 and 48 being destroyed like that I just wished that I could have saved 4448 ...if I only had the money 😞
Always loved these loco's one of my favourites were the mustard pot loco's, and the double ended CoCo locos from Vic Rail.. And here is South Australia we had those 44's here too always looked cool..
Here in South Australia we had the first build 930 Class Alco DL500B in 1955 before NSWGR first build 44 Class also DL500B in 1957 built by AE Goodwin, Auburn NSW. They all rock and are missed! Ansett 727.
As a kid I used to see these running around. I remember them carry ing coal or cement. The small R A CE containers were starting to appear but they lost out to larger containers like we see today. Mixed goods were starting to become unprofitable because of intermodal costs. Livestock wagons for cattle and sheep were disappearing also because it cost $20 to ship a beast which was only worth $20 at the abattoir.. Road transport was doing to railway what the railway did to. Coastal shipping. I reflect on them with fond memory but my life experience tells me that economics wins over sentiment any day........sad as it may be!!! Stavros
have all coaches that NSW government been put fire down south after closed passage service as bring in XPT TRAIN service and new bud cars into NSW railway?
@@AusLegoBoy Rip old locomotives apart with shears and cutting torches. Slice them into small pieces and transport the scrap to the induction furnaces for melting down!
They are such an iconic diesel for NSW Railways I don’t know why more didn’t get preserved
Thanks for the memories I worked trains with the 44 45 and later the jumbo 80 all run into the ground where only good for a trip to Albert sims.

I remember these when I was a boy seeing my grandmother in the southern Highlands. I really like the different sounds the horns make on the 44 class.
Where my favourite loco of all time. Very sad ending. Thanks for documenting 👍👍👍
Miss the 44s , alco heaven

Nice video.

I bet the private rail operator wished they had a good supply of spare parts. Nothing like thinking about the future..Just scrap them.
the scrapping at 9:30 is going to give me nightmares
Excellent scrapping action though. Rip that junk loco apart with shears and melt down the debris. Cut, cut, cut destroy!
