  • Becky Baldwin is one of the hardest working rock and metal bassists from the UK! Playing for metal legends like Mercyful Fate as well as her own projects Fury & Hands Off Gretel, Becky knows a thing or two about playing bass for metal. In this Artist Tookit, Becky goes over some techniques she uses, particularly using finger style for metal playing!

All the things your telling in this video are damned right. I play bass about 40 years. But only in bands. Now i try to learn to play the instrument rightly. You play very well, so i can learn a lot looking your videos. Thanks very much. Take care and god bless.

It was fun to see her with Mercyful Fate in 2022. When I saw them in Vegas, Joey Vera of Armored Saint was their bassist. Both were totally awesome and quite different from each other.

Becky is one of my favorite modern bass players. Billy uses 3 fingers not 4. I use 4. If anyone wants to use 3 or 4 it is a great technique but you need to do lots of hand and finger exercises to build up your weaker fingers. But Whatever fingers you choose to use at least you are playing the right way. Picks are for guitars not basses. :D

Becky, you’re brilliant and I love your youth and bass playing.
A kind word of advice from a 40+ years bass player. Began at age 11.
Your picking hand..Add your ring finger!!
Practice doing all the things you do with two fingers, using middle and ring only. Then practice 3 note per string scales. Picking them; index, middle, ring(E-G string).
Then (G-E string) ring, middle, index.
In the 80’s, I was in very good metal bands, opening for Crimson Glory, Lizzy Borden, Tony McAlpine and a few others. Now I play all kinds of music.
Find a way to incorporate your ring finger. You will not regret it.
Also, I believe Jaco said, you don’t need to slap to be funky.
Cheers!! You’re awesome!! Keep it up.

I'm gonna practice the gallop! I'm a big fan of yours, you're a good bassist and a decent person. I'm also the proud owner of your "bassists against racists" t-shirt 😎 Go get one, bass players everywhere!

Always prefer to use a light touch on the strings, and let the gear do the heavy lifting.

Are those DiMarzio x2n bass pickup's

The bridge pickup is Seymour Duncan Rickenbacker. The other one is most likely original.

I just realised I lead with middle finger all the time. When I do an octave the ring finger is at the bottom. If I try and flip it sounds terrible

Better to float the plucking hand than to anchor the thumb most times.

I remember thinking rock bass is simplistic, until I started playing. It's a fantastic instrument that is getting more prominence thanks to YT. And it's great to see so many female bassists now.
