Hi, I have to say it, this is the best preview of the R8. Very detailed, lots of examples, you even displayed how the camera works. Well done ! Thanks to your video I did preorder the R8 👍
Totally agree! This is a big purchase for me, I must have watched over 30 videos on the R8. Other videos may have been more cinematic but this video here is hands down the best review and my favorite. Thank you Jan
Great overall review, but I have to disagree with you in a couple of ways. It does not have a multi-controller, but has the superior touch 'n' drag feature which gets you there much faster. I use the buttons overall much more efficiently than you do. The 4-way joypad arrows on the back can be used for things such as left arrow for toggling between Servo and One Shot AF, right arrow for drive mode, up arrow for white balance, down arrow for picture style, front dial for shutter speed, rear top dial for aperture, control ring on RF lenses or the Control Ring Adapter for ISO. That 4 way arrow cluster adds 4 extra customisable buttons to your arsenal, don't waste it on moving the AF point.
The problem with touch and drag AF is that you cant use it with gloves, and during hot days sweat can interfere I have mine turned off in the R6mk2 and R5, So in winter conditions I think using arrow keys for that is logical.
Thank you for your comment! Your are right, the touch 'n' drag feature is quite interesting option, but I am not sure if it can be effectively used in complex and complicated situations (maybe it can and I just need more practice)... Also, I believe the multi-controler is quite good, but obviously, it is possible to work without it... Best, Jan
Thanks! I am glad you liked the video - kit 24-50 lens is an interesting option, but - franky - I would recommend to buy a more expensive one for this body...

The Eos RP also has the M-Fn button. Thanks for the review anyway. Quite useful.
Can you move the focus point by touching the screen? I'm not worried about IBIS if the usual digital stabilisation is in the camera. Also, I'm okay to use many batteries. I find power management easier to handle than the camera being bigger and heavier. So it seems there are no negatives for me. 😊
Hi and yes, I agree of course - it might be a good starting point for some buyers, but as always: lens is what decides... So at lease one prime lens like the 50mm 1.8 from my review is a necessity...

Hi and thanks and greeting to India... Well, it is more complicated question than it seems... I personally always tell people not to worry too much about cheap kit lens in combination with some really good prime lens (like 50 mm)... But this is a full frame, so buying cheap lens does not sound good... So I am just not sure, you might go for the 50 mm, but do know that sooner or later you will need more lenses to be more flexible... Jan
It has a physical rear curtain, so you're just shooting EFCS, which is what I use 'by choice' on my R7. On the R7, it has a flash sync speed of 1/250 with full mechanical shutter, but 1/320 flash sync speed with EFCS. I've had no issues with it at all, either in my home studio or outdoors shooting HSS. The R6 Mk II has a faster sensor readout speed than the R5 which has a faster sensor readout speed than the R6. I believe the R8 has the same sensor as the R6 Mk II.

Hi Jan, nice review. One remark about the lack of joystick: I feel that if AF auto detection of subjects is efficient, you do not need to move AF point by yourself so often. Am I right?
Hi Jean-Charles, yes - what I mean is: 1. it would really be nice to have the "joystick", because generally, it is very useful to have a good degree of control over the points. 2. but, since this camera is "sort of cheap", there must be some trade-off. 3. and finally, what my key point is: because of really very good Servo / Detection features, all this is just not a huge issue for the majority of user, it is just possible to live without it... Hope it makes sense, best, Jan
Hey! Can the canon R8 compete with the Sony a7iii? Would it be worth buying it over the Sony a7iii? Which should I buy canon r8 or sony a7iii? Answer me!
Hi Ioana, my bet would be on Canon, simply because it is much newer, but A7iii is certainly a good choice as well (it has been a while since I tested it so I cannot really make a precise comparison)...
Hi, well, I do not experiment much with manual focus lenses, so I cannot give you a really good answer. But generally, full frame like this would just make a lot of sense for this sort of artistic photos... Jan
Hi, awesome review. Was confused between R7 and R8 for wildlife photography. I am planning to use the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM or with the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM. except for the crop factor will the R7 be better for any reason??
No, and it will never have one from Canon. It does take the same extension grip as available for the RP, which makes the grip taller than that of the EOS R (without a battery grip). There are third party battery grips for the RP which will fit the R8. They're not fully functional though (only have a shutter button, but no other buttons or dials). The 2 batteries help though in extending shooting time.
Hello. Is the Canon R8 better than the Canon RP ? In terms of dynamic range, the R8 is superior, but colour depth you would be unlikely to see the difference between them and if you look at test scores in this area, they perform very similarly. But yes, dynamic range is much improved on the EOS R8. If you want a light weight, full frame camera with a few more features and therefore a bit more future-proofing and your budget allows then I would personally choose the R8 over the RP. I already have the RP for two years, and so I thought to replace it with this new R8. But if you tell me that in terms of image rendering I wouldn't see a big difference between the two, then I'll wait for an RP MII if Canon releases one... I don't make Videos, only Photos: Street Photo Landscapes, Portraits...
Hi and thanks, well, it has been some time since I tested Canon RP and I did not review them now side by side - so the only fair reply to your question would be: I am just not sure. But still, I really think we can presume R8 would just give you better results on many occasions, because it is just much newer (by 4 years, which mean really a lot in technology). So my bet would be on R8, but again - I have no scientific proof for this... Also, I believe the R8 is in fact meant to be "RP mark 2", so I doubt we will see a new even cheaper full frame any time soon... Best, Jan
@@jan-rybar Thank you very much for your answer, I indeed think like you that the R8 should give better results in terms of image rendering, especially since it is equipped with the same sensor as the R6 MII ...

I'm also hesitating whether to upgrade from the RP* to R8. For me the decisive factors would be: 1. Is autofocus much more accurate (not necessarily fast) ? 2. Is the image quality on the R8 at iso 12800 at least similar to the one of the RP at iso 6400 ? If the answer to both these questions is not a clear "yes", then maybe I'd better spend the money on a L-series lens (I have only "normal" RF lenses)... *I bought the RP 1.5 years ago only, as my 1st FF camera.
@@jan-rybar Thanks! FYI, based on YT reviews, forums, and the manual itself, I'm sure the R8 overheats with extended recording in any 4K mode, especially 4K60. I just asked because I'm trying to figure out how bad the issue is. It's a funny thing - a lot of people record in such a way that overheating doesn't come into play, but for many people, the overheating issues make cameras like this unusable for recording 4K video, because they need to record for more than 15-30 minutes straight.

These reviewers that are all talking about the Canon EOS R8 - you DO REALIZE that you are being MANIPULATED, right? Canon has been caught flat-footed and needs to occupy the $1,500ish price point - realize that the video podcasting segment of video is the ONE segment of the marketplace that Canon really lacks - Sony and (particularly) Panasonic are ahead of the game generally, with both having good competitors in the sub-$1,000 US price point. Canon is dangling the full frame tech at a very attractive price without putting much development $ into a new body. Thus, you are being used for cheap PR to keep Canon's factories running and grabbing millions of dollars of consumer buyers with little development cost. Thus, again, you are being MANIPULATED!
