  • So I saw this Story/advert from Bruch Boards and it got me thinking... What's my favorite board? and why do I like it?
How did i stumble across it? Advert? ..demo'ed it... got it cheap?
Anyway I thought I'd use this to ask the question to you guys... and read the comment to understand what sort of boards you guys are liking.

Quatro Super Mini 78L (I'm 66kg) because is pretty good in any conditions. I can use it from 5.3 to 3.7, from onshore to side-off. Surf is good, it jumps high and planes very early, the footstraps position is perfect, it's easy to jibe and I always had fun with it! If I had to choose just one board, that's the one.

Thanks for posting this question, Ben.
In the video the guy first mentions the Starboard Reactor - which Dany Bruch had a design input with, when he worked with Starboard.
I still have a Starboard Reactor 82 in my wave board quiver and I think it's an amazing board.
But the thing is, it's only an amazing board in certain conditions and at certain places.
It's fast and it planes early if you pop the nose like you would a freestyle board - but some people aren't able to do that , so they find it slow or sluggish to plane.
If you also make mistakes in your turns then it's a short and stubby board that will punish you - unforgiving mostly because of the short rocker line.
And that's often the problem with great boards, where skill is needed to drive them well.
The boards that sell, do so by word of mouth between friend groups, and these boards tend to perform everywhere, regardless of wave size or wind strength.
And so all the feedback reports for these boards are positive, rather than negative or questioning. These populist shapes take off for an era, as the ones to have.
And this populism changes over time.
In Fanatic, you couldn't go wrong with the Skate as a freestyle board and then with the Grip as your waveboard.
With Starboard, all the Kodes were pretty good shapes for the last decade, even across a wide volume/size range.
In Severne, the Dyno is currently the 'plug and play' freeride and wave board for most people, whereas the Severne Pyro is a new hit maker for higher skilled sailors who chase proper waves.
We might also take confidence in board design from wave event results - when those events finally return.
My reservation about that last statement is that I'm on the same boards as Koster, but I struggle to sail like him. Not sure why.

Best Board I have tested is the simmer fly wave ( I tested 72 & 78). Fast planing, really nice feeling on choppy spots (tested it at pozo…), and AMAZING wave ride. It does exactly what I want, keeps the speed and just gives the best performance.
I wasn’t interested by simmer style boards before as they are not doing boards for as long as quatro or fanatic, but after testing it, it was just mind blowing.
( I tested: Goya custom 3 & custom 4, Quatro cube, fanatic Grip, RRD wave cult, JP ultimate, severne nano,…)
    * I’m around 70Kg. Boards tested with sails from 3.1m to 4.5m, waves from 50cm to 2.5m

My biggest wave board is a 105L Simmer Quantum with a quad setup with smaller fins than usual. Very loose and fast for such a floaty board and reacts almost a good as my go to 92L. I’m 77kg and in head high waves with light wind, it is a treat. Definitely keeps the schlogging to a minimum on those marginal wind days when the waves are cleaner and more surfy. Cheers!

RRD FSW 85 (circa 08/09) - v old in 2021 but such a dream board for UK south coast cross on mush conditions - planes super easy, gybes and jumps like a dream, great on onshore waves. I'm sure I have more fun on this than lots of others do on their brand new boards. I also have the 80 which is equally fab (in fact I have 2 of each cos it's heartbreaking if/when they finally snap so I have spares !)

Many years ago it was my Fanatic Cross 100. 255/69cm, flat to vee bottom. A simple, balanced shape & true allrounder. 23cm fin, 3 footstraps and a 5.2, or 30cm fin, 4 straps and a 6.6 twin cam. It was very easy to sail everywhere, even overpowered. At the same time it was easy to plane in light wind and flat water. Nowadays my favourite is my first gen Tabou Pocket 85, my single board quiver. Came to me 2yrs ago in pristine condition. A bit more volume for me at 70kg, but it's such a friendly board that flatters my sailing a lot. It has opened dtl riding in onshore waves for me because of the way it turns and keeps speed on the wave. Ahead of it's time too at 228/58cm in 2006-7. Magic rockerline, subtle curve along the whole board, single to double concave to vee in the tail. My previous boards (Maui Project, T1, Fanatic Freewave) were crap at trying to waveride in onshore, either too flat rockered or needed very strong wind. The little Pocket is a gem and I've used it with 3.7 up to 5.9 sails. Best combo with a 4.5 though which is also my favourite sailsize. Love it so much I'm considering adding boxes for sidefins to give it an even bigger range.

I can enjoy onshore and sideshore waves and freeride from 16-17 knts until 35!! 5.6 down to 4.2 sails

I fell in love with those happy boards. I am 95kg and my weapon of choice is the 95l happy. Plus the 115l in Light Winds....plus the 75l in strong Winds.... and as it starts planning so early, I just ordered the 60l version - after 28 years of windsurfing in waves, I found the shape I love 💘 best!

Fanatic Freewave TXTR 96, 73kg. First I found it boring coming from slalom boards because it was so easy to sail. With my zero level skill for waves I now love it as a board where I can learn on - not falling as much in 15-30+kn. That might be key... (P.S.: small tri fin setup allows me to shred in the mud flats no prob, great fun!)

HA! I posted this exact question on FB the other day, Still haven't found my dream board, it's an expensive quest. Some boards have worked amazing in some conditions not others. I've had fun on Goya Quads, Simmer Quantum's and the Stubby. I think you need 3 boards

I’m a 77kg not-so-good wave rider who doesn’t often see good condition because I live in Switzerland. But I occasionally go to south france and Spain. Fanatic wave Stubby 88 L from 2016 is my wave board. I like it very very much. It was a bit sliddy in the beginning coming from single wave freewave board. But i love how hard it turns and the versatility. I can put a 5.9 on 15 knots by upsizing the central fin to 22 and it works for bump and jump. I’ve also used it in 35+ knots and 2-3 m waves and it still holds itself very well together. I can only recommend it as single wave board for intermediate riders. I did try the Severne Pyro 93 in Tenerife with 20 knots. It was wonderful and easier to ride than mine but I don’t think it won’t handle strong winds like the stubby does.

79L Fanatic NewWave Twinzer from 2009. I've had many boards since (quads and thrusters) but keep going back to this old board. It's design/shape can't be faulted - apart from deck grip fails... Cutbacks so much better than my quads. I got sick of constantly altering fin settings on the quads but struggle to find the sweet spot.

I like my 94 Goya custom (2015?) quad, but with just the two larger fins mounted. This gives drive in lower winds and less effect from weed, but still a bit of grip in the turns.
    So, floaty but agile!

Also love my Shakra 75L and RRD 90L Freewave (2021) but the Starship is just special, from 15 all the way to 35+ knots. Will never get rid of it, a genuine Swiss Army knife type plank.

I wanted to add something else. I rented the board from a station and was very skeptical as to whether the board would work with my weight and skills. But it did and better than I could previously imagine. I was really amazed at how well the thing stayed gliding on a close-hauled course. To clarify the surprise, 105 kg rider weight - 105L freewave board. I almost forgot the sail size I used. 5.7! Wind ~ 18knt. In any case, the wind wasn't very strong. Maybe 1knt above my personal gliding limit. Since then, no other board has surprised me so much in a positive way. The whole thing fit so precisely that you could think the board was custom made for me personally. So that was in the summer of 2014. I'm slowly beginning to understand why I don't fit so well on today's boards, even though I still pack at least 10L more volume on top of my body weight. That must be because of the ratio? The boards are all too short for me now! I think boards under 235 cm are not suitable for me and then I have to pack so much volume on them that I end up with a light wind freerider😂
