The original Laser Strike was made with a little of the top of the tang protruding out. It was hardened so as to throw sparks when struck with flint or chert. It was one more option to make fire. When ESEE began making them, they stopped doing that to the knife. I wish I could have afforded one back then. The ones made now are fine, but not as versatile.
I took the plunge, forked over the cash for Christmas 2020 & bought the Tom Brown Tracker #1 from TOPS. I use it for everything & more every day. it's a BEAST that continues to exceed all my expectations. Just want to say for most tasks, chores, bushcrafting, etc you can't go wrong with the Morakniv Companion. I bought mine in carbon steel for $15 five years ago & it has never faltered. $15!!!
Those knives are pretty cool, but in the 35 years I've been camping I've never had to use a knife to split wood. Not once have I ever walked into the woods and not found dead branches that I couldn't break up and use for kindling. For Bigger branches I use a saw and never had to split them cuz the were dead and caught fire easily. I guess if it's something you like to do it's fine, but a small camp axe works great too.
I'm the same but that's just what I use to get the initial fire started. I'm normally gathering enough wood for a few hours go even if I'm just going to the river. Plus when it starts getting dark I build the fire up and I have 2 citronella candle buckets I use as mini fire pits so I gotta have enough wood and kindling to put in them to last for a minute so the big log in the center can catch; but lantern fuel helps with that ;)
You just can't go wrong with a Mora. The price has no reflection on their quality. I have TOPS, Esee, Kbar, etc. but that MSK-1 is at the top of my want list!!!!!!!
I have five Moraknivs'. Nine dollars back in the day. I appreciate the thick scandi blade and the handiness. Those and two K-Bar 7 inchers.....And the ubiquitous Swiss Army knives and a couple Leathermen. I can't think of what I am missing.
I think the Esse 5 has most knives beat in overall hard use testing. You forgot to compare the Esse5 to the Becker 2 which it is tougher than in destruction testing overall.
As someone who has been camping and fishing for almost five decades, I can say that I have never carried just one knife in my pack. If I believe that I will be splitting wood, I will carry an axe, saw and large knife like a Schrade SCHF9, or Buck 119 along with a more handy belt knife like a Gerber Prodigy or Schrade SCHF14. In my pocket, I will carry a Victorinox like the Trekker, or Officer. If fires are prohibited, then I will carry a smaller combination like the Prodigy, a Mora Companion and a Victorinox. The Prodigy could probably stay home, but, unfortunately, there are too many 2-legged predators in the world, some of whom have discovered alcohol. Usually, the sight of a serious belt knife will instill politeness without having to unsheath it. Circumstances determine what knives to carry, but generally, a 5 inch fixed blade and a pocket knife will suffice.

The price is expensive but it's worth it trust me. I'd put the junglass against any other the same size. You won't regret buying any of the 3.
The ESEE laser strike has never failed me, I’ve put mine through hell. I even lost it in a pond at a popular campground and thought it was gone, 2 months later a foreman at my work to his camper to the same site and his daughter found it on the bank of the pond, all I had to do was sand the rust off the handle screws and the edge and sharpen it and it was right back to top tier. Also the micarta handle scales are excellent for gripping in any weather and can be cleaned with water soap and a sponge to look brand new. If you attach a lanyard to the knife you can grip even further back on the handle to make it a even better chopper. I have loved knifes all my life and used them for every application. But if I was told we’re dropping you in the middle of nowhere and your life is at stake I’m grabbing my laser strike
@@survivalgearofficial if you are talking about servival knife its got to be full tang if your life is depending on it and you can get a fire steel and a sharpener to attach to the garberg.
garberg is good, but overpriced. i've been using old hickory hunting knife ("kitchen knife2) for a year now and LOVE it. sure i wont baton it (2 milimeters thick at best), but for all other tasks? absolute winner, esp since its in mid level mora price range. my pick is any of beckers BK and mora companion/old hickory. AND USE axe/hatchet/machete if you need to split the wood, not a knife
I've had the BK2 for some time and it is everything said above. I would add, however, I disliked the blade coating and quickly removed it along with carefully grinding the blade back to squared edges so it could flint strike for starting a fire. I don't know that I've ever seen this mentioned but it's something I would suggest to anyone interested in its purchase.
Slysteel Spectre Combat Survival Knife is a boutique brand. But that knife is superb. It's balanced between survival bushcraft and survival fighting knife. I can create many top 10 lists, without having any Bark River in the, PS I don't mean that Gerber makes better knives, I mean, that there are many makers that make WAY better knives than Bark River does. Since you didn't relize, that this top ten is about mass produced Factory made knives, and since you praise as a better knife a "Semi-Custom level knife" then we can include other Custom and Semi-custom makers, and that's when Bark River knives, may not be included in such a list. Since you mentioned "Semi-Custom" category, you have to know that way better "Semi-Custom" makers exist. Survive Knives GSO and TRC Knives, LT Wright to name a few... 2 times better quality, 5 times better fit and finish and way better heat treatment than any Bark River knife ever had! In the same time, these all have similar or same prices as Bark River, do the math. which is better?
I've been using the same two knives for the last 3 decades . USMC K-Bar and Buck 119 . Its one or the other . Never saw any reason to up grade . Because they are at the top .
With all the respect, all knives can cut, however, there way better knives than those 2 you mention. Those are some of the best, near the "budget" knife category.
@@alcodie1558 TRC Knives Mille Cuori (Mille Cuori is like 4 times better than the USMC KA-BAR) - Survive Knives GSO 4.7- LT Wright knives Forest trail , Lionsteel T5, Joker Knives and Jeo-tec and a lot of other brands, make some better knives than those you mention for less money. Carried a full-size Kabar and a Victorinox Bundeswehr for years, plus an Eze-Lap sharpening rod and older magnesium fire starter. Smoked, so always had a lighter. Nothing fancy, nothing hyped up (no RUclips, back then), just good tools, good training (by my dad, initially) and experience. Remember that: Your most important tool is the one between your ears. Good hunting.
I have cheap bic lighters in my jackets, pants, packs, everywhere. They always work, even at elevation, if you warm them up first if cold. Bought a special survival lighter once, over $100. Stopped working on my drive home when we reached 9500 in elevation LOL.
i agree with the mora (bushcraft survival is the one i chose though) and the bk2 but i realy think that a CS SRK would be more suitable for this list than ANY gerber

Especially since the SXB would cut all the knives listed in half and has been tested and bested most knives shown here as Best Survival Knife...seems like a skewed review that's focus was to promote the MSK-1 which is a decent knife I like by my friends at Survival Tips...just confusing 😕.
THANK GOD!!!! Someone had to mention Ontario...1095 set up like Tops for hardly any price.. If I was given a $50 bill to cover a knife to muster out,I am headed for Ontario.. If budget is a question, Mora is the answer. I personally find their budget stainless to be pretty bad, but love the carbon steel, my carbon companion has a solid patina and doesn't rust in the San Diego salt air. The stainless is prone to more rust than many stainless steels in salt water use, which is a little bit of a bummer, and the blade is chippy when you use them for ridiculous tasks like I do, prying open mussels comes to mind.I don;t use the carbon knife on salt water kayaks as that's too much to ask for non-stainless, but if you're not going to be around salt water, try the carbon steel. Yes, you can baton with them even though they're not full tang.
So basically this is a commercial if it were a real video Survival Lilly's APO-1 would be in this. I have used and abused mine and it far outshines my Kabar.
Good list but one thing.. was supposed to be the BEST survival knives. I think you were a little all over the place with the selections stating for the price a budget etc.
I think my WINKLER UTILITY CRUSHER is a really good survival/BUSHCRAFT/EDC knife. It looks like the Benchmade 940 on steroids with big sharp serrations on the spine. I love the sculpted maple handles they are pretty much the perfect grip. Have a great day
@@greekveteran2715 and you probably paid a certain sum to have that kind of knife to begin with, most people don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a knife.
@@edleifer6719 I said "his" knife. Read again. You don't have to buy expensive knives, to get good performance. You can get. However, the Chinese knives that usually show on such "top 10 videos, are junk and these kind of " Top 10 videos, are just marketing and has nothing to do with reallity, thus it's usually just lies.
The first two at the beginning of the video looks so awesome and like always on crapy videos are not included on the reviews. It like clothes stores that have a manikin with cool clothes that are not available to buy.
I have over 100 knifes. Not including swords and axes and machetes, etc. But I need a high quality fixed blade knife that can take a beating. This list was very helpful but with my experience with gerber it’s either a hit or miss. They can be one of if not the best in your arsenal. Or be beaten by a $20 corner store knife. Which I have had happened. So I would do extended research and gerber before buying
My edc knife is the TOPS Brakimo. It’s also one of the smallest knives that I carry. But I would not be disappointed if it was the only blade I had in any “survival” situation.
Are reproductions floating, especially from China.. Respectfully,if it was a real one it had to have been a fluke.. 1095 they have science that makes them AMAZING!! in woods. Not just Ka-bar,but Tops, Ontario. Special quenching medium, industrial cryo treatment(cold) to remove stress.. If you ever get a chance, give another chance.. I buy gourmet steels for EDC,but going into chopping I never seen 1095 fail. 1095 or 5160 makes great tree blades IMO,but everyone has what they like to as I have not had luxury to test every maker.(sadly). I did not know Benchmade had bigger offerings, will have to try one out sometime .(162? going to look).. Salute..
@@aldenunion I’m sure it was a fluke because I bought it locally from an authorized dealer. I love 1095 because it’s tough and sharpens very nice. I’ve used it a lot over the past 5 decades and still carry a 33 year old USA made Schrade Bruin (5OT) in 1095. Benchmade 162 bushcrafter in S30V. 👍
@@tomlevasseur8550 Oh that Benchmade 162 looks like a perfect field knife.. I heard they are great but always considered them folders and such,I did not know.. Will need to keep my eyes open. Thanks!!
... because I totally want to store all my survival kit in a knife that I have to take apart with a coin or screwdriver so I can access a fishing hook. Sorry but the MSK1 is the modern equivalent of a Rambo knife. It was a novel idea at the time but abandoned fairly quickly. Besides, everyone seems obsessed with fishing hooks and Ive never heard of anyone using one in a survival situation because they are too busy trying to stay warm and get rescued. I dunno, a Mora and a baggy of widgets seems like a far more affordable solution imho.
Lmao I thought the same thing . It’s like one of those “ in this locked box we have the item you need , but you need said item to open the box” . Though, I got to admit the knife looks pretty cool aesthetically.
Yea if you like rust and pitting bought a expensive tops didn’t even use it and within less than a year it was in bad shape tops did nothing you couldn’t give me any tops knife they are expensive junk
while they are all nice knifes, i prefere mine to have a few more functions, like fero-rod example. while its not a must (compared to stability and durability) its not exactly unimportant either, so the clear winner (atlast for me) is the MSK1 without a daubt, a very fine survival knife ^^
It is not a survival knife but in vietnam I used my buck 110 to survive 3 attacks at bad breat distance. We were not al Owed to carry a fixed blade knife in town butthe. Buck 120 was a folder and could be concealed it was lethsl when used properly
You definitely never heard of and tried the Eickhorn Forester Line... it's a shame because it's Made in Germany and manufactured in one of the best and well known cities for manufacturing knifes all over the world. Give it a least a try!!!

Rajah 2, had it for years. Auto deploy was great and I used that thing to chop down trees and dig holes
Also chop garlic
Can you do a video on knifes for large hands I usually have problem with the handle of a knife being too small for my hands
❤❤❤very very nice
Gerber amazing knife i have this also its amazing knife im so thankfull for this knife!!!
How about the ColdSteel Recon1..🔥
Those serrations on the other side of the blade what are they for?
Primarily for notching (in wood), I believe. But I'm sure you could probably re-purpose the serrations quite a number of ways.
So basically this is a commercial if it were a real video Survival Lilly's APO-1 would be in this. I have used and abused mine and it far outshines my Kabar.
Which KaBar there are well over a dozen different models .. so that actually doesn't say much .
Msk1 primitive knife where you order or buy one cant find it online
Buy a KaBar Warthog if you want a clunky knife. Buy an Esee 6 knife if you want to survive.
Knife on the thumbnail?
TOPS Tom Brown Tracker 1
What’s the knife from the thumbnail?
Good list but one thing.. was supposed to be the BEST survival knives. I think you were a little all over the place with the selections stating for the price a budget etc.
I think my WINKLER UTILITY CRUSHER is a really good survival/BUSHCRAFT/EDC knife. It looks like the Benchmade 940 on steroids with big sharp serrations on the spine. I love the sculpted maple handles they are pretty much the perfect grip. Have a great day
Your Winkler, is way better, than any knife on these poor adversisments like this
@@greekveteran2715 and you probably paid a certain sum to have that kind of knife to begin with, most people don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a knife.
@@edleifer6719 I said "his" knife. Read again. You don't have to buy expensive knives, to get good performance. You can get. However, the Chinese knives that usually show on such "top 10 videos, are junk and these kind of "
Top 10 videos, are just marketing and has nothing to do with reallity, thus it's usually just lies.
Gurkha Kuhkri is the best survival knife ever, I’m telling you.
Agreed.
Ka-Bar and Cold Steel make some good Kukris. Safety Tip : keep your fingers on the sides when drawing a Kukri from its sheath.
The first two at the beginning of the video looks so awesome and like always on crapy videos are not included on the reviews. It like clothes stores that have a manikin with cool clothes that are not available to buy.
How about a list of knives made in America?
Esee and Tops are American and should serve all survival knife needs.
Which ones do U recommend
ESEE 4,5, & 6
My edc knife is the TOPS Brakimo. It’s also one of the smallest knives that I carry.
But I would not be disappointed if it was the only blade I had in any “survival” situation.
Very good list of survival knives. Your content is getting better and better as your selection of survival tools.
Thanks for your positive feedback and glad you liked my selection of survival knives!
That's because he is using other people's time and effort to make his videos
Agreed but I have literally steered away from Gerber long ago.
where do you buy this knife???
LMFII is a great one too!!!
survival is fun
Me...I'll stay with my good old
Ontario SP10...
4.58 mark what kind of watch is that
I want the the knife in pic used for intro pic. The tom Brown tracker design..where can I get it?
Amazon
My Becker BK2 broke on my first branch strike. I bought a Benchmade 162 and it is much better.
Are reproductions floating,especially from China..
Thanks!!
If I had to have a knife for survival, I would go with a Tops Bob and a Esee 4.
What about the new Cold Steel Drop Forged Bowie?
Great video and information 👊🏼🇺🇸
... because I totally want to store all my survival kit in a knife that I have to take apart with a coin or screwdriver so I can access a fishing hook.
Good video, but miss leading.
They never said anything about the Tom Brown tracker knives
Or the Cold Steel line.
BK2 Is a Beast.
All great survival knives!
Yea if you like rust and pitting bought a expensive tops didn’t even use it and within less than a year it was in bad shape tops did nothing you couldn’t give me any tops knife they are expensive junk
@@kennykamensky993 I don't have a record of your name in our system. Didi you reach out to us when you noticed the damage?
A decent affordable pocket knife that isn't too heavy
Cold Steel with their secure locks or Kershaw Blur.
very first knife kbar olean ny lol my hometown

Sorry but Wofgangs Ambulo are you forgotten. Thats really a cool knife 😉
Nice footage steel #DBK
Wich knife is the one on the thumbnail??
Cant find it😥
SXB Skullcrusher
where to get
while they are all nice knifes, i prefere mine to have a few more functions, like fero-rod example. while its not a must (compared to stability and durability) its not exactly unimportant either, so the clear winner (atlast for me) is the MSK1 without a daubt, a very fine survival knife ^^
This is. Cool

Owed to carry a fixed blade knife in town butthe. Buck 120 was a folder and could be concealed it was lethsl when used properly
Why did you have the Tops SXB in the thumbnail and NOT feature it in the video?!!
It may be the best single tool option for Bushcraft and survival
Esee 5! The 1/4” thick 1095 is impossible to beat. Gerber has yet to redeem its choice of cheap and inferior materials
Gerber and SOG have both gone to shit after the 1980s by sending everything to be made in China and chasing down the lowest cost and lowest quality.
You definitely never heard of and tried the Eickhorn Forester Line... it's a shame because it's Made in Germany and manufactured in one of the best and well known cities for manufacturing knifes all over the world. Give it a least a try!!!
Unfortunately I never heard about this brand. Thanks for your suggestion.
anyone know the knife in the thumbnail? it looks awesome
Tops SXS
Looks are one thing, quality and survival are another.

Pretty much the entire Work Tuff Gear lineup beats everything here. However I'm biased...
