It is Japan's first domestically developed stealth fighter jet and will replace the Mitsubishi F-2 by the mid-2030s.[1] Its development is to also bolster the nation's defense industry and potentially enter the international arms market amid Japan's change in defense posture.[3] In October 2020, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was selected as the lead developer.[4]
The Japanese possess formidable technology, quality control, and mfg capabilities. They've never built anything post WW2 that reflects these capabilities. FX changes that.
People forget that over 60 years ago the piloted X-15 rocket plane attained Hypersonic speed, going as fast as Mach 5.54. No other nation on the planet has come close to achieving these speeds in a manned aircraft. So its long overdue that America capitalize on this lead and I am sure the next generation of aircraft will be world leading designs,
