Thanks for this video! I want to add some clarifications of my own: - Runes can be attached to whatever you want, not just to people or weapons. Many runes are seen confined in artifacts other than weapons, like the crystals and cards you can buy and use in game, pedestals, etc. Some runes even "take residence" in a whole area somehow , like the True Beast Rune which "decided to stay" in L'Renouille, or the Moon Rune when it was still enshrined in Blue Moon Village so that it could give energy and confort to the vampire folks. - Because of game mechanics, we're usually only allowed to give the characters 1 to 3 runes, but in reality an individual can take more than 3 runes in their body and it can be placed anywhere, not just hands and forehead... but it's rare for most people to be able to stand too many runes in them. Crowley, for instance, was said to have 100 runes in his body. Similarly, no one said that True Rune bearers can only bear a single True Rune, but just having 1 is generally really taxing already.
Another unconfirmed is the True Blinking Rune. It has been noted that while the basic Blinking Rune allows for some minor teleportation, it does not explain Viki's ability to teleport through time (which explains the two Viki's of Suikoden 3). It also follows the logic that magic runes are the children of True Runes: True Fire > Rage > Fire, True Gate > Blue/Pale Gate, etc. Viki may very well also be ageless (another True Rune effect) as she has appeared in every game (which would impossible given Suikoden 4's occurrence for a normal mortal). This has never been confirmed by Konami, but is a very popular fan theory and makes very good sense. Felt it deserved a mention. AND, speaking of appearing in every game: Jeane! She's always very attractive, never old or wrinkly. Someone explain THAT one please. Some speculate that she also bears a True Rune but who knows. This one has a lot less evidence than the Viki one.
There are three characters that have appeared in all five games. Leknaat, Vicki, and Jeane. Leknaat has the back half of the Rune Of The Gate. Even with just half it grants agelessness which is why both she and her older sister Windy were well over 300 years old. Vicki is a teleportress with a special Blinking Rune and it’s not a true rune either. She can teleport to all of these different time eras and could be the same age in all five games assuming she did each appearance one right after the other and even bump into a younger version of herself along the way. As far as Jeane is concerned, she has the Charm Rune which is special, but is not a true rune either. As a matter of fact, Jeane does not have a true rune as confirmed in Suikoden III. If you have Lilly Pendragon go to the castle’s spa and take a bath with Jeane you will see Lilly get frustrated that she can’t find a true rune anywhere on Jeane’s body. Every major Suikoden installment that has a detective character always fails to investigate her properly. To add insult to injury, the only character in the series to see Jeane for “whatever they really are” is Koroko the dog in Suikoden III and agrees to keep it secret when Jeane asks 🐶
if anyone watching this in 2020, just so you know the creator of suikoden is developing a game that is a spiritual successor to suikoden called Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. support it at kickstarter while it's live!!
Something cool about the moon rune that was left out is that it also helped tame the bloodlust of the vampires around it. Sierra basically had a full coven of non-lethal vampires until it was stolen. With some of her dialogue i believe the rune often doesnt need to actually be physically held either. Some of the in game dialogue, the fact that it responded to her even when affixed to neclord, and that it was stolen without sierra's death would mean that she probably kept it in some form of shrine.
That true rune in the bottom right corner; I'm pretty sure that's the Star Dragon Sword (the Night Rune transformed), and the mirror image one in the top right corner might be Yuber's Eightfold Rune
Great video, love revisiting one of my favorite RPG series. Only thing that I could really add is that the true earth rune also has a canonical wielder by the end of Suikoden 3, since Sasarai reclaims it in the final dungeon.
You could not controll me all along. But I played my part, because I loved you. A love, I am now aware, was a mistake. And I am going to end this here and now. Basically ruined a kingdom, his life and the life of so many people out of love for a women, that just used him.
I can't find a way to write the pronunciation in English, as I don't believe, you have any vocal sound like the 'u' in the English language. I believe it's pronounced in a french way. ( de.forvo.com/word/luc/
Hi, great video. I also commented on part 2, but just wanted to give my input on the relationship between the night rune and the moon rune. I really wouldn't consider the moon rune to be subservient to the night rune. Clearly they hold a close relationship considering that the moon exists in the night sky. While the night rune allows dominion over creatures of the night, a runic vampire is a different story altogether. The night rune in the form of the zodiac sword did not have the ability to destroy Neclord while he still possesed the power of the moon rune. It was only after Sierra took the moon rune away before the sword was able to destroy Neclord's body. How I see this is that while vampires fall under the category of 'creatures of the night', the bearer of the moon rune is a different story. The fact that the night rune was acquainted with Sierra and spoke as equals, albeit slightly antagonistically, suggests that their domains are related, but definitely neither is subservient to the other. Sierra as the original runic vampire who mastered the rune is different from other vampires turned by other vampire. The moon rune allows the creation of vampires, arguably a 'superior' creature of the night. That doesn't mean that the rune itself is subservient to the night rune. Even if the night rune destroys every other vampire in existence, it does not hold dominion over Sierra, the original runic vampire, who can create more vampires as she wishes. The dominion the night rune has over creatures of the night is also different to the Dragon rune's control over dragons. For one thing, the Dragon rune doesn't want to destroy dragons, while the night rune pretty much wants to destroy creatures of the night. On the other hand, the night rune doesn't grant the ability to control creatures of the night the way the Dragon rune controls dragons. A simple comparison I can give would be something like, if someone manufactures a weapon and gives it to the army, and the army has control over all these weapons. That doesn't mean the army has control over the weapons manufacturer.
Those are very fair points, and the Sierra one was unconsidered. Subservient was probably a poor choice of words, as, as you point out, True Runes are similar enough on a power scale that they can usually counteract each other to some degree. The focus of that commentary was mostly on what you point out about the "lesser vampires" not formed directly by the rune. Sierra being Suikoden's Dracula makes her a cut above the rest. Especially if she has the rune in her possession. Again very glad you liked the video!
What are you talking about with Gremio? He was killed by a flesh eating cloud or something like that that was released within a room during a mission. He died in order to protect Tir, the Soul Eater didn't take him as a sacrifice.
It's been awhile since we did this video, so our memory is fuzzy, but. 1. Yes Gremio did die because of some flesh eating trap/disease/magic thing. 2. BUT near the end, Gremio was one of the four people who died around Tir (main character) and was thus one of the Ghosts(?) that appeared to defend him from the BBEG at the end of the game. And those four seem to generally be considered to have been eaten by the rune. (If memory serves the other three were Ted, Tir's Dad and the woman who started/lead the rebellion before Tir did) Again it's been awhile, but if memory serves that's basically the deal for how that worked.
I love the Rune of Punishment and Suikoden 4, I have seriously considered getting a tattoo of it myself. I love hearing about and from people who are as enthralled with games (especially the same games as I am) So thank you. -Isaac WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T USE IT!!!!! -Tarren
Use it? More like it uses me. I kind of took it as the way my life tends to go. I try to do -good- things, help others, put them before myself, but, a lot of the times it likes to backfire on me, blow up in my face, cause problems or even break stuff. So something like the Punishment Rune, that deals damage (doing good deeds) but the user takes damage (negative results) really kind of clicked with me. Also was a pain to get done even in all black, because I forgot to eat before it started, so I was turning pale due to... uh... reasons? Not nausea or exhaustion but... in the middle of there? Hey, don't suppose there's any real lore on the unique runes, like some of the one-of-a-kind attack and magic runes? I don't think there was but I don't remember either.
Maybe do as Graham Cray and remove it? If it's actually causing those problems? :P As for individual stories for runes there's not enough in depth info on each rune more than what their games provide as far as we have been able to find.
16:56 I’m so miffed that I never got to play this game, for some unknown reason they elected to not release this game in Europe or the UK so I fell in love with one and two then had to wait ages for 4 to come out.
I think that people can bare more than 3 runes since crowley bears 100 runes i guess the games just caps it at 3 (you were able to have only 1 rune in S1). And it seems likely that you can bare 2 true runes since windy tried to take the soul eater while already having one half of the gate rune (not sure if it counts as a true rune)
We'd actually forgotten that you could only equip one rune in Suikoden 1. Though we did remember/re-encounter Crowley in our research for the video, but both he and Windy are noted exceptions; with Windy having been said, specifically, to have obtained the ability to use two True Runes at once; and Crowley is the only known character in all of the games to carry more than three runes. Which is why we didn't mention him. That being said, it is true that as far as we could find, there was no specific mention of rune maximums, the three rune maximum was an assumption we made based off of the mechanics of the rest of the series.
Tugeng123 123 the black sword and bright shield are not true runes on their on and only become a true rune when joined together. So even if you obtained the black sword at the end of the game, you'd just have become the bearer of the rune of beginning, a single true rune
3 rune slots as max is definitely a game mechanic. Having said that, in terms of lore, rune slots are certainly related to an individual's affinity to magic. In the games, characters with good magic tend to get more rune slots. Also, the position of the rune also affects the power, where you get more damage when the rune is on the head compared to the hand. This suggests that while it's technically possible for everyone to bare more runes, it's probably pointless and difficult unless you had an incredible affinity to magic. At the very least, fighter characters with no affinity to magic who haven't even unlocked all 3 regular rune slots certainly wouldn't be able to bare runes elsewhere. I'd also assume that the hands and head grants the strongest magic power, which makes bearing runes elsewhere pointless. Unless of course you're a magic obsessed runic scholar like Crowley, who was dedicated to achieving powers comparable to true runes without actually bearing one.
We're not... really sure what we said in this video that implies that Star Dragon/Zodiac Sword isn't canon, even went and re-watched the section on the Night Rune just to double check, you're absolutely right, it is the manifestation of the Night Rune, which we could've sworn we said, sorry for any confusion?
Star Rune ( Zerase suikoden 5) + Star Dragon Sword = Night rune Just like Black sword rune (Jowy) + Bright Shield rune (Riou) = The true Beginning rune And True Front Rune (Windy sister of Leknaat Suikoden 1) + True Back Rune ( Leknaat) Become The Gate Rune Twilight Rune + Dawn Rune = Sun Rune
Actually no, Star Dragon sword is an incarnation of the Night rune, which means, it is the Night rune. Star rune, my guess, is just like it's child rune like Twilight rune and Dawn rune.
I 'm with you. First time met Luc, he has the attitude of a bratty girl (cuz of the sprite and portrait). In Suikoden II, he is more like a grumpy lady. Hahaha
As mentioned below, and I'm not sure about 3 true runes, but I am sure one can bear 2 true runes at least. Due to some bad dialogue selection I've seen the bad ending to SV a few times. I believe if you get that ending Prince Frey ends up bearing both the Dawn and Twilight Rune. I don't believe he can bear the Sun rune as well because I believe that's the entire point the Dawn and the Twilight are what balances the Sun rune and vice versa. Hence the Ying yang symbols on both runes.
We believe Killer Rune is correct. You may normally only have one true rune at a time however any children runes of true runes do not seem to have the same limitations.
Loved 1 & 2 but 3 was way too unwieldy with it's oddly 3d battle system that would screw up all the time. Perhaps with better ai it could have been better. I played 1 & 2 over and over, but couldn't even get through the 3rd game. Shold have tried 4 & 5 but 3 just ruined the series for me.
For the record, Tarren has worked on slowing down. Isaac has spent a long time convincing him to do so for exactly these kinds of reasons, sorry it's hard to understand.
i'm in a suikoden lore content binge right now and this is giving me a reason to go back and play all of em.Good stuff.

Sorry I'm commenting five years on,. But emperor Barbarossa WAS NOT a Rugner. The last Rugner ruler of scarlet moon was Giel.

Sooo... can a True Rune bearer usa a weapon with another True Rune?
As far as we recall (Been a few years). We don't thiiiiink that true runes can be attached to weapons at all. So, no they wouldn't be able to do that.
