    If there are any residual toxins left after years of the sun breaking down the oils on those deck boards the worms will make short work of them as they break down. Worms are great for removing toxins from soil. I see you didn’t run the banana stalks through the chipper... I don’t either because the stringy structure clogs up my chipper. Gotta do that by hand if you want fast banana compost, and I do because it makes some of the best compost I’ve ever seen.

    We replaced our roof a few years ago - and to save the nearly $1000 dumping fee, I put the old cedar shakes that were removed from the roof through the chipper. Then I used them in the back garden area - it was a lot of work to sift through the material and take out nails and any other garbage, but it was worth it to me.

      @CitizenAyellowblue 4 года назад +6

      Stettafire Carpenter here. Hardwood is finite in the sense that we can’t use it faster than it is produced. And the source of the timber is a critical issue. The point here is the-use. If the boards have reached the end of their life as useful planks, then chipping them is entirely appropriate. Better than burning or taking to landfill. I would do the same (if I had a chipper that could handle it).

    Some countries have banned CCA treated wood for people complaining in comment section. Wood preserving products containing arsenic and chromium were banned from sale from 1 September 2006 in the UK.
    In Australia 2004, "the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Chemical Authority (APVMA) advised that CCA must not to be used in Australia for high-contact structures such as
    garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, children's play equipment, patio and domestic decking, and handrails."
    "from July 2012, CCA was declared a restricted chemical product, from APVMA - "It cannot be used on high-contact timber structures: this includes garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, children's play equipment, patio and domestic decking, and handrails."
    So from 2004 in AUS it was advised not to use CCA on domestic decking, from 2012 it was banned. Just check what your governments laws are if you're worried.

    I've found feeding very hard materials and very soft materials into the shredder simultaneously gets very good results. The soft stuff bulks out the hard stuff, taking a bit of pressure of the motor, and the hard stuff provides a solid cutting surface against which the shredder blades can get a better chop for the soft, stringy stuff.

    If you really want to test that the chemicals on the boards will be bad, first let the ground be analyzed, than put the mulch and test it again after one year, 5 years to see the result !

    While I think that the scare about pressure treated wood is a bit overblown when talking about new materials, because arsenic is no longer used to produce pressure treated wood, however I would still be cautious about old wood depending on the age. Here in the US, there are test kits for arsenic and heavy metals, so I would probably test the wood before chipping and spreading and then probably only use it on walkways. But I would be cautious about using on any food plants, even fruit trees without further research and testing. Poisoning the family is bad form, and once you've got heavy metals leaching into the soil, there isn't an easy "undo". Having said that, if the boards tested clean, I wouldn't hesitate to use them for constructing new garden structures, because I think the risk is more minimal. When chipped the wood will have a greater surface area, and thus spread up decomposition and leaching. Into the soil.

    Decking oil often contains pesticide and anti-rot additives.
    If that chipper is based on a blade design those nails are really shortening its useful life. At the old pallet factory we used a heavy low speed toothed augur crusher, followed by a high speed hammer mill. (and a magnetic tipped conveyor at the end to remove nails.) The system produced large splinters rather than cut chips. Most of it went to either hog fuel at a power plant or used as filler in strand board. That hammer mill had an electric motor that must have weighted close to a ton, it took about a minute to come up to speed and then 5 minutes after cutting the power to slow down.

    Interesting video. I too have old decking boards and have been thinking of ways to re-use. Like you some are good for wood projects around the garden, while the rest needs to be disposed. I hadn't considered using the boards as mulch! My chipper, however, is too small to cope with 6x4 timber boards (PT softwood). What size were your boards, and what was the cutting capacity of your Hansa chipper?

    I would do research on the stuff used on the wood. Because for example, you should never make rabbit cages with treated wood, as the rabbit nibble on them and can easily be poisoned. I however probs would of just burnt them. :D

  • @TheHollowBodiesBand
    @TheHollowBodiesBand 4 года назад

    You could compost the chips and then use them as mulch, thus reducing even further the chances of chemical leakage.
    Though, in reality, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • @ohio_gardener

    Cool seeing that turkey. I read once that the Australian Brush Turkey builds a compost pile out of brush, leaves, moss, etc, so that it is 3' high and 5' across. Then the female digs a hole in the middle of the pile and lays her eggs in that hole. The decomposing compost then takes over the job of incubating the eggs, and the hen can be off doing other things.

  • @Patmccalk
    @Patmccalk 4 года назад

    I’m curious as to if that cloud coming off those mounds of mulch were just dust, or if it was the wet mulch in the middle of the pile beginning to decompose and produce a ton of heat.
    It always amazes me how putting a bunch of wet material under pressure can nearly start a fire

    How to know if a decking board has chemicals in a dumb way.
    1. Rinse it in water
    2. Lick it
    3. Wait for you to get sick
    4. If you do, don't put it in the garden
    5. If you don't feel free to put it anywhere
    Please don't try this, this is the dumbest thing I have come up with🤣🤣.

    Chipping green palm fronds first on the soil then the hardwood gives the tree plenty of nutrients and helps feed the microbes to break down the mulch.
