    Sunken Treasure or Dead Fish?
Critical Role’s Call of the Netherdeep is the newest official adventure path to hit 5e D&D. Set in Critical Role’s world of Exandria, the adventurers will have to compete with a team of rivals to find their destiny and dive into a world of abyssal horrors and psychological trauma. An ancient hero and demigod sends messages and visions pleading for help, calling the adventurers deep into a place no mortal was meant to sink. Is this worth diving into? Grab your swimsuit and a potion of water breathing as we go through everything you need to know.

As a devout critter, I find this mod to be well written by my favorite author, but not dependent on my foreknowledge of the setting at all. And yet, it begs me to mash it up with explorer's guide to Wildemount. The level 5 dungeon, betrayers rise, is a great mid size dungeon with demonic influences. The Ank'Harel gazeteer I find sufficient, if not excellent, for homebruing urban adventures in a fantasy desert oasis city (think Disney's Aladin meets Waterdeep). The lore of a brass dragon there begs me to pull in info from Fuzban's, and my version of the city features a cult of brass blooded dracinic sorcerers and a black market on eggs from nearby canyons. The aquatic mega dungeon delivers on its promises. By far my favorite part is at the end of the mod, where we are offered ideas for how to continue a very high level campaign in the event of the worst possible outcome; the Apotheon becomes so enraged that he breaks out of his demiplanar isolation and wreaks havoc on the surface world.

As my table just wrapped up our Icewind Dale campaign, we were getting together to sound out what to play next since all our schedules still align to keep playing in the time slot we set aside. After much thought we had narrowed it down to either strahd or netherdeep and we decided on netherdeep as interest was stronger there. I am one of the only ones who has watched the entirety of campaign 2, most of campaign 1, and at least the first dozen of campaign 3 (with all of the between specials for exandria too). Yes, a critter but a casual one because I find the players and dm funny and like their storytelling. Their stuff simply aligns with my taste. Anyway! That aside, this meant I was even more knowledgeable than my dm, who, while also someone who has watched a lot of critical role, isn’t too up to date in lore. Which is fine. I’m fully expecting him to adapt this to what he thinks will work and he is good at that. I have absolute faith him him. But as for the other players, maybe have watched less than 7 episodes at all between each other. So going in blind a little. This is why the dm had us read up the wildmount book and use the heroic chronicles for our backstory building. It was honestly a lot of fun and I got on call with some of the other players and helped walk them through explanations that pertained to them and their backstories (so not to overload) and helped them with whatever they asked of me in terms of cleaning up the details of those. We are a small party so this not unusual for us. Anyway! As for what we decided to play, we have a reborn wizard necromancer (well aware we could have gone with hollowed ones but opted out of that and dm is working in what to do about it all here), a water genasi samurai (that’s mine), and a sea elf oath of the ancients paladin. Weirdly enough, I had the idea to play a water genasi samurai fighter even before I was aware swimming was going to be a thing for this campaign. And same with our wizard (in terms of not needing to breath). Our sea elf player originally considered a gnome but realized they didn’t have a way to compensate for water and swimming and they didn’t like that so they browsed their options and decided on sea elf. They also decided to add bard as a dip. As for a back up character, not sure about anyone else’s but mine is a barbarian and warlock multiclass. Haven’t decided which barb subclass to do but warlock I intend to be the fathomless. I’m intending to do a swimming cat lol so I went with tabaxi. Let’s me still be frontline when needed without too much sacrifice for useful water themed things. So that is our characters!

I can't wait to play or get this for myself.
I love the ocean, Cthulian monsters and have seen literally everything Critical Role.

Perfect timing! I decided last night to run this as my next adventure. I am interested in the rival system and testing my NPC role playing abilities. I can take or leave the Critical Role angle, but think Matt Mercer and Company have created a fascinating world.

I'm planning on running call of the Netherdeep but I feel like it's out of my depth. I've never ran a premade campaign but I think this'll be fun

Thanks for the video. One of the main complaints I've heard is the lack of fleshed out underwater rules. Or, they were expecting more. Did you find the underwater rules sufficient or did you have to homebrew/use a specific underwater guide to make it feel right?

Great point; this is covered in other books though so we get it not being included.

Be good if you could flag spoilers or sections for players and dms
