    If I get the license and install one of these, but I travel alone will this work to call for help if needed or even find other people exploring?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Год назад +3

      Great Question! I'm pinning this. Yes, definitely. I know in my area there are often people (radio nerds... I say that as a compliment) who often will monitor transmissions and even call and check on people from time to time. There are GMRS repeaters set up in several areas to increase range. It's 100% not a guarantee, but it couldn't hurt. If you travel alone a lot I'd also suggest a satellite communicator like the Spot-X or Garmin InReach.

    That is a super clean mounting rail. Hope we have something similar for the FJ! I have the same GMRS radio. So much better than CBs years ago

      Yeah getting fitment was a little tricky by design. But I like how low profile it is. I just wouldn't use it to mount a large tablet because that would be too much weight in my opinion... since it's relying completely on the tabs that hold the radio bezel in place. But for a phone and a gopro... it works well.

    The Taco Garage Dash Multi-Mount with RAM balls works great too! I have an 11" iPad Pro, an iPhone MagSafe Charger, and the KG1000G+ front panel attached to it. Very happy so far.

      Just got the TG DMM last week and have a quadlock 1" ball adapter (labeled for motorcycle usage) with their wireless charger head that should be in tomorrow. The next install will be the MXT275 and use an RJ45 socket to run the handset down through the lower dash and remove it when not needed and keep the main unit tucked in the dash

    For passing stuff through the rubber grommets, wire pulling lube helps. Non-conductive and non-corrosive/rusting. Home Depot carries it, Klein tools brand I think.
    For sealing the boot, marine grade 3M silicone. Would be good in addition to that zip tie (really should be primary, zip tie as secondary). Really important if passing through a cut in a flat faced grommet rather than one like this Tacoma has.
    Great video as always Jason! Seeing your channel come up in my feed makes any day so much better!!!! ❤

      Thanks! Good tip on the silicone and lubricant. I used a little glass cleaner as lube... didn't film it really because I was delirious with a cold. Surprised the install footage turned out as well as it did! :-)

      If the wiring is the issue I'd check out the first 4Runner radio video. That one I used the 12v outlet because it was really convenient to do so. But yeah I get it. Drilling holes is nerve-wracking... until you do it a bunch of times and then don't care anymore. 😅
      Before doing the final installation I actually used the radio that way and just passed the removable magnetic antenna cable through the door. I wouldn't do it that way permanently, but it worked fine for the weekend. OR... just get a handheld GMRS radio to be able to chat with your trail buddies. Range isn't as good but still works.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Год назад +2

      So everyone I know personally switched to GMRS. Even the older Jeep crowd has switched at this point. Might be a regional thing. Yeah drilling holes is always a little nerve-wracking. Most pieces are pretty easy to replace if it came to that. And the tiny holes on the side of the center console could be easily patched. I made them very small for that reason.

      I still hear people on CB where I hunt and go off-roading in SE, OH. I run both in my truck. CB is still the best option when driving on the highway for traffic info.

    • @JasonExplainsThings

      They make a little add-on bracket to run a light and antenna on same side. Or you can use a different antenna mount. They also make mounts that attach to the edge of the hood or truck bed.

    Question….whats the benefit to wiring to fuse box vs using the cigarette lighter plug?
    Also, does the sound come through the car speakers or the unit’s onboard speaker?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  6 месяцев назад

      The install benefits are self explanatory. The sound can come out of the handset, radio body or both. You can wire an external speaker that they sell as well.

      @@koalafan1576 I got mine in less than 20 minutes. Once you have your FRN, it's pretty quick. Write your FRN down someplace so you can refer to is if you need it - it's not just for radios. There are no "handles" on GMRS, just call letters. It's technically a restricted license and under Federal control - you have to obey the rules - and it's not uncommon for an occasional HAM operator to police the frequencies.
