I use the Besame cake mascara and an old L'Oreal mascara wand that I kept from my last tube of it (the shape works very well for what I want). It's a hard cake and I just wet the wand with a little water and work the top of it into a paste. The paste dries fairly quickly, so I'm not too worried about it getting nasty, but if you're squeamish about it, you can spritz it with an alcohol spray to sterilize it. Sure, it's $25 with the tin, and the refills are $20, but it lasts a loooonnngggggg time.
FYI, Zao organic beauty have very similar packaging to Elate but their mascara is refillable (they still send the refill in a plastic tube but it is detachable from the bamboo case which you can reuse for the next tube of mascara. They do the same with lip products and I find them amazing! If you haven't heard of them I highly recommend checking them out :)

I want to be more sustainable with my makeup but unfortunately the shade ranges and pigments are not necessarily as easily accessible for us medium to deep skin colors:(
I bought Native for the first time two years ago, thanks to you. I also quit after my first pack (even though they worked great) because of the plastic. Now they have compostable packaging, I just ordered another three-pack!
I really would like to see how dirty hippie cosmetics holds up, i've been eyeing them for awhile. They have a liquid mascara & eyeliner, and a bunch of other products
I love your videos because we're both in Texas, so I know pretty much everything you mention will be available to me. And you and Madison are cute af. ♡
I tried native on your recommendation and I absolutely love them! Smells great applies easily. And they have a couple different types for sensitive skin which has been such a relief. I guess I’m allergic to most zero waste deodorant recipes. 😭😭 they don’t sell plastic free near me though. 😞 As for me I’ve just started out trying Bessame and I love their rouge which you can use for blush or lips. Their mascara cake is super cool but I have yet to master it. I got some brushes on Amazon (they didn’t have any in stock on bessame) and it’s easy to apply but it definitely takes longer and you have to be very careful how you apply. That said it’s actually more of a wax? (I think) so it’s actually much more hygienic to apply and keep than using regular mascara. Definitely recommend giving them a look. I’m super into vintage and retro looks so this up my ally. But the fact that most of its also zero waste is freaking amazing.
I know makeup expire but with powders at least, I tend to clean em up with rubbing alcohol and a cotton cloth. I think this really helps with making sure it doesn’t cause breakouts
With powders you can also spray them down with alcohol to kill bacteria!! It doesn't change how it performs, but it could help delay that point where it'll start causing breakouts
I feel like using a mascara wand and storing the wand in the mascara is worse than using a separate applicator. In both cases you use it and stick it back in...
BH cosmetics and The Balm are trying to go more zero waste. Recyclable packaging and clean ingredients! Not everything they make, but it’s a start! Xoxo
I have loved Izzy zero Waste makeup, Havu lipsticks, pacifica, La bouche rouge, and fluff cosmetics and so many more that I have talked about over on my youtube
Glad I came across this after subscribing to your channel. I stopped wearing makeup due to the fact that I didn’t like how it used animals products &/or tested on them &/or was not environmentally friendly (green product & green package). However, I really miss wearing makeup somedays and would like the option without feeling like I’m adding to all the bad things in this world. When I used to were makeup it was minimal as I would only use some eye shadow and mascara. Can’t wait to see what you have for these options. Now onto your video! 👁👁
I want to buy more sustainable makeup but I have such a hard time with the super limited shade ranges (for the most part) and limited formulas (sensitive skin). Hopefully some of these might work!
Disinfect your makeup with sprain rubbing alcohol on it. It won't ruin it also if you have makeup that is falling apart you can spray rubbing alcohol on it press down with your finger and it will dry and firm . Or you can make it extremely liquidy rub it around with a q-tip and it will firm up as well period does take 2 days for it to settle. You can look up videos on this
I'm into effects and fun colorful makeup. My only problem is how pale sustainable/eco friendly eye color palettes are too pale for my skin tone. They look nice but yeah I probably wouldn't get the color or hues I want out of the pallets. One of those pallets didn't seem too bad.
Are there some products or services you are still missing on the Zero-waste market? If you could work together with a product designer, what would you dream of?
I also use eyeshadow for eyeliner! It always melted off my face until I sprayed my brush with rose water and then applied and now it stays on all day (or as long as I remember not to rub my eyes ferociously haha)
I don't know if you will see this. But can you do a video about more make up but also for zero waste color correctorS ? I haven't been able to find any.
Shelbi, I have loved watching your videos. I am trying really hard to work through the products I have as I am beginning my journey to a lower-waste lifestyle. I am bit curious about what you said regarding cake mascara (I have never used it), I have always felt that way about the germs/bacteria with regular mascara. Why does cake mascara have more bacteria?
Great video as always! I do have a problem with trying to recycle mascaras. More brands needs to step it up to have a better recycling program. We live in this best country in the world, BUT we are so wasteful!!
Is the word you were after disingenuous, re the mascara tube? I'm using Lush's mascara because they take it back in their recycling programme, but not a huge fan of the formula sadly. Still, might be more used to it by the time the tube is finished!
I thought I'd recommend lethal cosmetics and adept they are more low waste and you can refill them! Their palettes are recycled plastic and the mirrors are upcycled and you can refill like I said.
If you hadn't been gifted the sponge, is it something you'd use? I feel like sponges are so bad in many ways from environment to bacteria and fingers work fine for every foundations I've ever used. Also, just curious, if you don't use all the product in paper pallettes, do you have to remove the product before recycling?
I don't wear makeuo at all but thinkin about getting those balm sticks for my mom- she likes balms and liquids more than any powders I think she'd love those, plus I could take solace in her buying one less giant plastic pallet
Love this! I have been slowly switching my makeup over to more sustainable brands over the last couple years. I really like shopping small Etsy shops as well as bigger more established eco brands. My makeup is now almost all sustainable 😁
I love the fat and the moon highlighter!! I just got it a few months ago. I don’t wear makeup very often, so I really like how subtle it is. I currently am trying Cake Mascara from Besame and it’s...alright? I’m still trying to figure it out. If I wet my mascara wand too much then the mascara is too runny. But if I don’t use enough water, it flakes and dries out super quickly 😅 I’m going to keep trying though! And I started using Native deodorant because of you and it’s perfect for me! I got my partner to switch to it as well hehe 🤪 Thanks so much Shelbi for sharing your routine :)
wanted to share a pretty cool win: i’ve used native deodorant for about 2 years now and one time my friend used my deodorant in a pinch and she loved the scent (coconut& vanilla) so much she’s completely switched to it! and now her bf even uses native too! they say it’s the best they’ve ever used :)
I go with what my skin will take and to minimal in those products. Like some do double duty like bronzer/eyeshadow. Gel for hair will also do brows to stay put. The older I get the less I use.
Pacifica has a nice mascara and they have a program where you send used product containers back to them and they recycle them into other products! I personally don't use it any more, but it looks beautiful on! I just have VERY sensitive eyes and have found recently that I have to wear dermatologist tested mascara (even that is not the perfect solution)- but that's not Pacifica's fault, I have that problem with literally all mascaras. It's affordable too and is sold at Target, but returning used products goes through Pacifica's website.
new subscriber here and im definitely going through all your videos. your videos have been so inspirational as I've been wanting to be more eco-friendly for years now, but wasn't sure how. your account is like a map for me. I'm the weirdo in the family who always tries to think about the environment first, i hope that by following in your footsteps i can inspire my family to think more about their eco footprint :)
Have you heard of shop for days literally just saw them today and apparently they take old clothes and upcycle them and sell them. Just wondering if you've heard of them and what you think
I actually have no idea how to recycle any of my makeup or skincare product packaging, especially when there’s still product left that’s been sitting for years so I don’t trust it anymore and would rather get rid of it. Would love a video on that
Currently switched over all my makeup to vegan and cruilty free. Some are environment better than others (glass) but I guess while I use those I can bookmark better ones for the environment.
I don't think that cake mascara is less safe than regular mascara packaging - I mean "stick a brush into a liquid and put it on your face" applies to regular mascara tubes as well xD Maybe tubes are better because the content is less exposed to air but I don't know if mascara has any ingredients which can be affected by air
I LOVE Native, it took me 2yrs before I found Native while i was looking for more sustainable options. Now they're they're the first thing I recommend anytime anyone remotely hints at going with a more natural deodorant LOL I'm so happy they went plastic free, everyone else thinks I weird for being AS excited as I am... but I am! I'll try the charcoal the next time i need a new one.
If you want to make your eyeshadow a bit more opaque like an eyeliner, try wetting the shadow with a bit of water, or wetting your brush with setting spray. ♡

channels like you an Immy have inspired me to go vegetarian and I'm so grateful I found this eco-minimalism lifestyle! Thank you for making these videos
If you haven't heard of them I highly recommend checking them out :)
just ordered more native plastic free deodorant, and now they have candy cane😍😍
💙🍭✨
Thank you for this video. I had some things in my Sephora cart and was grateful for the more sustainable recommendations!
I would love to see a video on tips for teens / people who live in non eco friendly people’s houses
I’ve been wanting a video like this to watch about makeup and sustainability! This is absolutely perfect 🤍🌵 I look forward to trying sustainable and plastic free makeup after I finish the makeup I bought in the past and I am still using so I don’t waste money and product.
I would love for you to take a look at my growing channel if you are interested in sustainable beauty! I review sustainable makeup and skincare companies and tell you what is worth it
Thank you for this 🙌🏼I feel like its so hard to find low-waste makeup
thank you for posting this because makeup is my form of self care and I would love to make that part of my life sustainable
Can you look into Makeup Geek. They sell individual little packets or refills of makeup.
Yes but they come in little plastic clam shells 🙃 but maybe if we write them and ask it to change they might!
You are so beautiful and I always love your makeup especially your eyes !! Thanks for the video !
I want to be more sustainable with my makeup but unfortunately the shade ranges and pigments are not necessarily as easily accessible for us medium to deep skin colors:(
They don't make shades for the ultra fair either. But do what you can do, try mascara or lip balms, any swap you do helps😘
Kjear Weiß and RMS have foundations too. The kjear weiß is same as the powder package wise 😊
New subbie & I’m loving the content chica! ✨
I bought Native for the first time two years ago, thanks to you. I also quit after my first pack (even though they worked great) because of the plastic. Now they have compostable packaging, I just ordered another three-pack!
Plastic Free is the way to be!
I really would like to see how dirty hippie cosmetics holds up, i've been eyeing them for awhile. They have a liquid mascara & eyeliner, and a bunch of other products
Tuesday did you mean 'Mad Hippie' brand? I haven't heard of dirty hippie brand.
That B roll of you and Madison putting on deodorant gleefully... Lol I love it!
Have you tried Pacifica? They are super affordable and although they do have plastic, they offer a recycling program.
I've never been this early to one of your videos and I actually really need some new make ups. ^^
I've tried beauty blenders and personally I go back old school..yep my blending fingers works the same to me
Same.
With powders you can also spray them down with alcohol to kill bacteria!! It doesn't change how it performs, but it could help delay that point where it'll start causing breakouts
The makeup brand The Balm has come out with blushes and bronzers they are completely sustainable packaging!!
Xoxo
It’s definitely tough finding good eco makeup brands! I do love the products I’ve tried from Elate!!
I tried a cake mascara from Etsy and sadly I did not like it... it flaked off and went under my eyes:( this video is so helpful! Thank you!
I don't know if you will see this. But can you do a video about more make up but also for zero waste color correctorS ? I haven't been able to find any.
The mascara link isn’t right. It takes you to doggie poop bags. Opps
We live in this best country in the world, BUT we are so wasteful!!
literally made my first native order two days ago 😂 that discount code would have been helpful then! oh well, still excited to try it ☺
Excited for you to try our products! Tell us what you think!
I brought it and they are really bad, they crumble and leave little green bits of foam all over my face. Also rip easily when washing 🙄
My makeup is now almost all sustainable 😁
with the mascara were you thinking of the word "disingenuous"?
Girl your skin!!! Is soooo nice. Do a skincare video pls pls pleaaaasee
🙌🙌🙌
i only really wear mascara so my impact isn’t too high in that regard but thanks for posting this!!! maybe i’ll start wearing more makeup :))
I used your native code so I will be stocked up for a while thank you!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
💙🙌
Me not knowing eyeshadow palettes expire🤦🏻♀️🤣
wanted to share a pretty cool win: i’ve used native deodorant for about 2 years now and one time my friend used my deodorant in a pinch and she loved the scent (coconut& vanilla) so much she’s completely switched to it! and now her bf even uses native too! they say it’s the best they’ve ever used :)
This made our day! 💙
I go with what my skin will take and to minimal in those products. Like some do double duty like bronzer/eyeshadow. Gel for hair will also do brows to stay put. The older I get the less I use.
I just ordered the plastic free Native a week ago because you mentioned it in a past video and I LOVE them!!
💙🌱🌎
omg i'm so early lol! yay!! you seemed very vibrant and happy in this video :) loved the website recommendation and the recycling tips!
It's affordable too and is sold at Target, but returning used products goes through Pacifica's website.
pacifica recently released a couple of mascaras that come in glass bottles!!!
new subscriber here and im definitely going through all your videos. your videos have been so inspirational as I've been wanting to be more eco-friendly for years now, but wasn't sure how. your account is like a map for me.
Would love a video on that
Same!!
I love Native deoderant SO f*cking much! The coconut scent is to die for and it is the only natural one I've found that works all day. So amazing!
💙🥥✨
Currently switched over all my makeup to vegan and cruilty free. Some are environment better than others (glass) but I guess while I use those I can bookmark better ones for the environment.
I don't think that cake mascara is less safe than regular mascara packaging - I mean "stick a brush into a liquid and put it on your face" applies to regular mascara tubes as well xD Maybe tubes are better because the content is less exposed to air but I don't know if mascara has any ingredients which can be affected by air
Especially if you clean the brush in between uses 😁
Would you ever just not use makeup to be more sustainable? That’s what I ended up deciding to do. Just wondering =)
I only wear make up on occasion and I def don’t plan on giving it up. To each their own
I’ve been on a Shelbi kick today! Thank you for all the efforts you put into your content. ❤️
Appreciate the love Justina! 💙
Is there an updated one of these somewhere?
I’ve tried so many cake mascaras but they just dont dry properly which is my problem because I sweat so much😂 then I’m a raccoon an hour later
Yes 👏🏼 yes 👏🏼 yes 👏🏼 yes 👏🏼 I love this video! More of these please 😁
If you want to make your eyeshadow a bit more opaque like an eyeliner, try wetting the shadow with a bit of water, or wetting your brush with setting spray. ♡
It always stays a bit better for me and shows more if that's what I'm going for.
I've been using powers that are waaaaaay past the two year mark and they don't irritate my skin at all. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who does this!
