Every villain that batman has to deal with in Gotham respects him because he’s the only one who has put up with them for so long and yet he still tries to help them and give them a chance to redeem themselves. He’s the only one who cares, the only one who didn’t reject them like society, the only one who was there for them.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an alternate universe where Batman was killed, and every single Villain that respected him all banded together, just to hunt, torture and kill the one who murdered Batman.

The murder must have been made by a stranger then. I mean, kill Batman is basically their most important sidequest of all Gotham supervilains since forever. If a true Gotham crime boss managed to do it, he probably be respected by the others to have succeed to it. It's like beating the final boss on Extreme difficulty. Only the most mad ones (like the Joker) will probably try to kill the murderer for vengeance.

I mean he's even gotten through to Joker before, even if just for a moment. I'm about to reference the killing joke, even though it's way too overdone, and just to clarify, I'm referring to the comic, not that godawful movie, but with that disclaimer out of the way:
in the killing joke, after Joker explains to batman his entire philosophy and tells him how pointless and funny everything is because of how frivolously stupid it is, and he's laughing, and telling batman how funny and clearly obviously funny it is, and then he looks over at batman, and realizes batman isn't laughing. And he just has a moment where he looks genuinely tragic, sad, alone, just a pathetic little man, and he just asks, "Why aren't you laughing," and you can see, for just a moment, that the Joker has had a flash of sanity, that he's taken the step to ask himself, "What if it's really not funny?" and batman's sheer force of will has conquered his.

I feel like the Villains want Batman there for their own satisfaction. Gotham is an unbelievably easy city to get away with crimes, especially if you're super powered in any way. It's like the villains were in sandbox mode. Batman changed the game though, he alone served as a symbol, a warning, a deterrent, a legend, and a foe. And everyone of the Villains recognize him as their only true problem in Gotham City, and they likely also realize that he's fighting a dozen other villains too. With this in mind, they probably respect him as much as Batman antagonizes them. Him dying is like Hercules losing a strong man contest despite never having lost before. It's both unexpected and unnerving.

Batman cares for (most of) his villains and actually wants them to get better, to help them as most of them are just not well in the head or just desperate.
The most obvious example is Mr.Freeze, he does what he does because of desperation wanting to help his dying wife, to him there is no other way. Most stories when Batman finds out he mostly ends up trying to help him in some way or another.

Gotham Knights did Batman better than Suicide Squad. Why? 2 reasons:
    1) Standalone game with its own universe. Not tied in to another game series.
    2) Didn’t use Kevin Conroy for Batman, and had Michael Antonakos, a lesser known VA, voice the character.

Batman was the only hero (besides maybe Superman, though he'd likely send Joker to the Phantom Zone after like his third run in with him) who gave these villains a chance at redemption, every single time. He never let them lose themselves, he never gave up on them. He always saw the potential in them to get better, to overcome their inner demons. He always wanted to bring Harvey Dent back, he always wanted to cure Waylon Jones and help Bane cure his body of Titan. He always wanted to help Victor save Nora. He always wanted to get Edward Nigma and Johnathan Crane the help they needed to become better people. And he always saw the potential that Joker could one day attone for his crimes. Batman was the most heroic of all heroes because he didn't want to stop the villains from hurting innocents, he wanted to stop the villains from destroying themselves. So the idea of Batman dying doesn't just affect the citizens of Gotham, the Justice League, or the Bat Family. It took a savior away from the people he was throwing behind bars

Gotham Knights by no means is the best game in the world, but people need to quit complaining and quit complaining it to the Arkham games when it's the BatFamily like alot of people wanted without Batman to overshadow them.
