One of his first pieces, the "Maple Leaf Rag", became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag. Unfortunately he was not as famous as he should have been during his life and had a "tragic" end: he lost all his money in promoting his opera Treemonisha leaving him penniless and disappointed; and he developed tertiary syphilis and a resulting descent into madness and died of dementia.
