BMW Z3 Antenna base. Repair and MOD!

  • Lots of Z3 owners have seen this: a small push against the antenna the wrong way and it snaps off the top of the antenna base.
I read about fixing it online and heard it was a really difficult job.
You know what? I thought the entire job was easy, and it went pretty quick.
Afterwards, I added a tiny new antenna mod, and I think it looks pretty cool!
But mainly, since it's so much shorter, it's not as likely to act as a lever and snap the same part.

Glad to hear it. It wasn't as hard as everybody says, was it?

My pleasure. And thank you: I've bought quite a bit of Mercedes and BMW parts from you all over the years that have solved a lot of problems for me.

I'm several hours into changing my antenna at this point. The antenna base is still about half an inch too low for an original antenna to screw into, even when I shove it all the way up... May have to remove the grommet and try again.

My antenna kit came with several different adapters to change the height. I show them in this video, and highlight which one worked for me,and why.
      Good luck!

One more comment: I did have to remove the rubber dome shaped piece in order to get it all together. I just went ahead and replaced it. The part number is in the notes.
Once again, all of this is in the video. If you just skimmed through it like I do, you may have missed some important steps.
Let us know how it goes.

@@lyunardo I get you. The aftermarket antennas are much easier to install than the originals.
With the original you've got to get that VERY tight fit in with the grommet to the body - shoved into place from the outside - and then a VERY tight squeezing the tip of the antenna assembly INTO the grommet - pushing from inside the quarter panel. One can reasonably do one or the other - stick the grommet (by itself) into the quarter panel, OR, shove the antenna assembly (by itself) into the free floating grommet. Working within the confines and awkward positioning of the inside of the quarter panel and having to shove those two together - - - well, I haven't accomplished it yet.
What I'll try next (once my patience returns to me) is to perhaps scuff out/ slightly widen, and/or lubricate the grommet entry hole so that once the grommet is in place in the body of the car, the antenna assembly can be pushed in from below without using superhuman strength.
      May God help me :)

@@ziparis Now that you mention it, I think that I had a problem with that rubber seal that inserts into the body at the top. I had it twisted around a little, so the spacing was off. Once I got it lined up facing the rear, I was able to screw the original antenna in. That confirmed the angle was correct, so I could get my stubby aftermarket piece in.

My z3’s antenna just broke off and it freaked me out. Thanks for the reassuring video!

The part that broke was the base. Details are in the notes below the video. I bought the shorter stubby antennae so it wouldn't break again.

@@lyunardoThe funny thing is I actually bought a stubby antenna (3") for this reason but I still snapped it off at that plastic base. I was not careful enough with the car cover lol.

@@Sneekystick I feel your pain. Taking off the car cover on a snowy day is exactly how mine got snapped off too. I hope you're good to go now.

Thanks. Where did you buy the part and which part did you need? My antenna broke off too and so it doesn’t screw in properly.

Unfortunately I didn't see your question when you posted it.
The part numbers to the antenna and the base are in the description up top.

    • @lyunardo
      @lyunardo  3 года назад

about $185 total. The base was about 160 on it's own.
