I live in Tulsa and have raced at Tulsa Tough for years. It's always a mental battle to do these races. There is some really good advice in this video that I think will help me in the future. Thanks for coming out and playing bikes with us Jonathan!
As always, really good insight but what I really appreciate is the honesty about the scariness of the situation. We dont get a lot of crit in the UK but these videos are tempting me to give it a go
definitely taking this advice into the SLC Crit tomorrow. I'd rather blow up staying in the top 10 and go for the break than risk the crashing in the corners
The scariest part of the crash to me was after Jon got up, and a handful of riders almost took him out and buried themselves into the pile. Heads up call and play to minimize damage from that crash. Pouring one out for the skinsuit though. A tragedy. 😭
I am the guy one wheel in front of you in the crash, and have some footage of it up. You did blame the wrong person for the crash, so hopefully he doesn't catch any flak as a result. I think what happened is the guy in front of yellow took the corner too wide and slow, pushing yellow out into United, and when they bumped, couldn't keep it up.
Damn, this was a 1/2 race?! Dudes were all over the damned road and here I am hoping to upgrade to avoid stuff like this. My favorite part is the bike and wheel just sitting inexplicably in the middle of the road.
It really wasn't that bad. Just your standard super tight, big field crit. John unfortunately caught a few poor decision moves from other riders. If you want to race crits, be ready for some craziness and crashes sometimes.
Those close calls made me wince just seeing them in the video… 😬… I don’t want to imagine what it felt like going almost 30+ mph…. Glad you came out of that crash ok… that could’ve been a lot uglier…
My advice, focus on a different race. The field is just too large for the course. There is also a metric ton of truly terrible riding for a P1/2 race. Simply not worth the risk. Oh, and that Legion guy... total muppet.
was thinking same... some fields were 165. there's always going to be risk but this feels like NASCAR where the spectators are just there to watch the carnage.
what the hell is with Legion being so aggresive and careless while racing, every single video I see them on the track, they do cat 5 sketchy sh*t and then take pride in "we're friends outside the race, enemies when we race". I thought of them as such a cool team mixing racing and lifestyle together, but the more I see them in action, like bro, c'mon

I kinda like the live ride data in maybe the bottom left corner without the black background to see easier
I've raced many crits, this one looks straight up scary; I probably would never race this one 🙂.

How did the bike make it through the crash?
Jon's bike is okay!
Oh look - legion almost crashing someone out again…What a surprise
Seems to be a thing.
@@philc9305 yep.. they've been doing it for years and then cry foul when they're raced aggressively. Clown College of LA
Not even apologized
twice. he switched some other guy on the camera about 5 mins later. fucking liability

Good decision to lowside. I can say from personal experience that trying to bunny hop will fail miserably..
John your fitness was great you just need to crit race more. You definitely need to race Tulsa next year.

Bike racing = risk vs reward. Frankly one outweighs the other.

For one guy, this race is not worth it. You must have a powerhouse team of crit riders.
