Wife of 19 yrs walked out on me and our 5 kids last July. We spent months homeless or in a shelter. After countless 60 hr work weeks I made us a home again. I was married for close to 30 years when my husband left me for a woman at work. It tore me up and almost broke me. The absolute darkest time of my life. Sometimes I was so broken I felt like I couldn’t breath. It’s been 3 years since that day and while I almost can’t stand to remember the feeling of the darkness, I am proud that I made it through a time where I almost gave up. I use to play this song over and over again when it came out. I was the wife, but felt like the other woman. My husband spent all his time and affection on other women. This song gave me the strength to say enough. And I left my husband. It was the hardest decision I ever made. He was the love of my life, my whole heart. My husband never thought I would ever leave him. He changed his life completely, and won me back. Our life our love our marriage was happy, unfortunately that was only for a short time. 5 years later he died in my arms at the age of 51. My heart forever broken He was and will always be my 1 true love. Even with all the pain he caused me. I truly loved him, and he did change 100 percent.

It's an understatement to say devastation is what one feels when a marriage ends due to infidelity. I was more than shocked since it was a close friend. I'll keep all who have experienced what I have in a general prayer.
Acording to what I read, this was the first Sugarland song written entirely by Nettles, and she did not think it was all that good, but the other member of Sugarland, Kristian Bush, finally convinced her to let him read the lyrics, and he was blown away. He also stated he feels like a big brother to her...he is a married man. He described how through multiple attempts Nettles kept breaking down crying. It was making him very angry, and he said it was like watching a close friend being tortured, and by Noon he was exhausted emotionally, and just said they would have to peice together the clips, he could not bear to watch this anymore. Even though the end result required dubbing over the parts she was breaking down in, that is what makes this video so powerful. It is almost like she layed bare every emotionally painful thing that had ever happened to her in this video. You can't possibly fake that, or even reproduce it. Sugarland has done this song countless times since, live. In my opinion, none of the subsequent performances carry the raw emotion of this video. I can also easily see why Kristian Bush found it so hard to watch it, but it made for a truly remarkable video that is hard to ever match...the viewers could truly feel the pain. It was real, it was raw, and it was amazing.

I remember vividly as a small child, sitting in the car with my stepmother as she bawled to this song on the radio. I didn't fully understand as a kid, I just knew my dad was hurting her and it was a lot for me to grasp at the time. It wasn't until I got older and realized what the song meant that I bawled at the reality of what my father put her thru. While my stepmother has left me with emotional scars, I still cry when I hear this song, for all the pain he caused her all those years...

Everything about this music video is so spot on. The black background, the casual look, the hair just slightly disheveled instead of being perfectly in place... it allows the viewer to really focus on the emotion she's feeling. So heartbreakingly beautiful. Most of us know the deep aching pain of a failed relationship and too many of us know what it's like to be the second choice. None of us have to live this way! We are all strong enough to know our worth and move on ❤️

I've had a guy try to juggle me and another woman and the second I found out I wasn't his only choice I broke it off. But some people don't move on when they find out their SO is cheating. What makes the song and video so special is that it’s her raw and genuine emotions that was not choreographed. From the start of music videos with MTV etc, in early 80’s, I have never seen the singer choke up in tears unable to stay synced with the song and not retake. She insisted on leaving it as is but not to play on people’s emotions to promote herself or the song. It was spontaneous during filming and she let the world see her genuinely vulnerable and relatable to viewers being real and not fabricate a false connection most of us have experienced.

They wanted to stop because they could tell it was genuine emotion but she kept going through with it. I wasn't able to fact check that but if it's true it just makes this song so much more relatable
The raw emotion that you talk about is real during this time when this song was being done she was in the middle of going through a nasty divorce with her husband at the time who she had recently found out was cheating on her, hence the divorce, which also helped create this song.

I was married for close to 30 years when my husband left me for a woman at work. It tore me up and almost broke me. The absolute darkest time of my life. Sometimes I was so broken I felt like I couldn’t breath. It’s been 3 years since that day and while I almost can’t stand to remember the feeling of the darkness, I am proud that I made it through a time where I almost gave up. It's an understatement to say devastation is what one feels when a marriage ends due to infidelity. I was more than shocked since it was a close friend. I'll keep all who have experienced what I have in a general prayer.
Acording to what I read, this was the first Sugarland song written entirely by Nettles, and she did not think it was all that good, but the other member of Sugarland, Kristian Bush, finally convinced her to let him read the lyrics, and he was blown away. He also stated he feels like a big brother to her...he is a married man. He described how through multiple attempts Nettles kept breaking down crying. It was making him very angry, and he said it was like watching a close friend being tortured, and by Noon he was exhausted emotionally, and just said they would have to peice together the clips, he could not bear to watch this anymore. Even though the end result required dubbing over the parts she was breaking down in, that is what makes this video so powerful. It is almost like she layed bare every emotionally painful thing that had ever happened to her in this video. You can't possibly fake that, or even reproduce it. Sugarland has done this song countless times since, live. In my opinion, none of the subsequent performances carry the raw emotion of this video. I can also easily see why Kristian Bush found it so hard to watch it, but it made for a truly remarkable video that is hard to ever match...the viewers could truly feel the pain. It was real, it was raw, and it was amazing.

I have my roots in rock and roll and at 59 starting to really enjoy so much country music. In the past I've been a fan of country pop crossovers like, The Dixie Chicks, k.d.lang, etc... now I find I'm listening to bands like Sugarland, Lady Antebellum and various singer-songwriters.

this song breaks me every time I hear it, I was with a man 10 yrs older than me for 6 1/2 yrs he controlled me totally and the abuse I suffered mentally,physically and even sexually was meant to kill me but I survived he would leave me long enough to go to her bed then come home and beat me but being so young with no one to help I was trapped and in the 80's they didn't have the resources we have today, I got away Thank God remarried to a great man but he suffered a massive stroke then a seizure that nearly took him from me now 3 yrs later we are just friends that live under the same roof he feels less a man due to well he can no longer be a true husband but I will never leave or cheat he saved me when I had no one. After listening to this, I finely watched the video how powerful she is putting her heart into it.
Everything about this music video is so spot on. The black background, the casual look, the hair just slightly disheveled instead of being perfectly in place... it allows the viewer to really focus on the emotion she's feeling. So heartbreakingly beautiful. Most of us know the deep aching pain of a failed relationship and too many of us know what it's like to be the second choice. None of us have to live this way! We are all strong enough to know our worth and move on ❤️

I've had a guy try to juggle me and another woman and the second I found out I wasn't his only choice I broke it off. But some people don't move on when they find out their SO is cheating. What makes the song and video so special is that it’s her raw and genuine emotions that was not choreographed. From the start of music videos with MTV etc, in early 80’s, I have never seen the singer choke up in tears unable to stay synced with the song and not retake. She insisted on leaving it as is but not to play on people’s emotions to promote herself or the song. It was spontaneous during filming and she let the world see her genuinely vulnerable and relatable to viewers being real and not fabricate a false connection most of us have experienced.
@davidkriete654 yes I had heard from somewhere that they were even trying to check on her during filming. They wanted to stop because they could tell it was genuine emotion but she kept going through with it. I wasn't able to fact check that but if it's true it just makes this song so much more relatable

The raw emotion that you talk about is real during this time when this song was being done she was in the middle of going through a nasty divorce with her husband at the time who she had recently found out was cheating on her, hence the divorce, which also helped create this song.
