Isbin is my favorite classical guitarist. I saw her perform as part of 3 Guitars 3 a decade later, and her recording of "Asturias (Leyendo)" by Albéniz is my favorite classical guitar recording.
I just discovered this classical guitarist this past week when PBS did a story of her that came out four years ago. After more than 40 years playing she is still going strong.

ha-ha, I was also 18 in 1975! time flies especially as you get past 30. After 40 I didn't want anymore birthdays. I've got 41 guitars but struggle to play anything these days.

Sounds like this was filmed shortly after Sharon won the competition in Toronto which I saw - the whole thing - five times through Rodrigo's "Fantasia para un Gentilhombre" concerto - with an out of tune piano and some stiff competition including Elliot Fisk. She won and she deserved it. Absolutely. Very nice to see and hear this excellent performance. If I'm not mistaken she's probably playing a guitar by Manouk Papazian (sp?) Everybody in Minneapolis/Saint Paul was playing them thanks to her teacher, Jeffery Van.
Can someone help me find this: In 2003, I saw on the internet a video of a Spanish man playing Barrios' La Catedral, and using a pick instead of his fingers. He did a perfect job even though playing that piece with a pick is absurdly difficult. The guitar, if I remember, was very small, probably a lute. Lost the video during the next 20 years. Many thanks to anybody who can point me toward that video again.

To be fair, Eric Johnson couldn’t even do this today. Not without serious focus and dedication. This isn’t like learning a bunch of licks and stringing them together over a few changes. I say this as a huge EJ fan and as someone who studies both classical guitar and other styles. You have to dedicate chucks of your life to it.

This was approximately 40 years ago when the mainstream legends were all Masters tottering around in their 50s 60s and 70s. We are all master critiques.
How amazing to see her a so very young and wonderful artist!
I remember this was the contest where she was awarded the Kohno guitar. It is due to this, I bought my Kohno, which I have been playing to this day.

She's so buttoned up and prim and proper here. Now she wears leather pants, tight jeans, and silk blouses.
As I remember, she seemed solely -and intensely -dedicated to the guitar then.
