As far as I can tell, it was because a patch came out while I was playing online so I was playing an outdated version of the game hence the "inappropriate activity." Likely what happened to others as well.
Now if they could do something about the brightness constantly changing in some areas, or give us the ability to remove that damn vignette without modding... Being on the rafters of the inverted tower in Liurnia, for example among many others, is hurting my eyes. "Look it's bright, now it's dark, now it's bright. Dark. Bright. Dark. Bright. What do you mean you didn't move and just turned your camera 90° up/down? Dark. Bright. Dark. Bright." So many aspects of practicality or gameplay sacrificed for the sake of "looking good". Urgh.
