Nick is such a melodic bass player I always end up listening to what he is doing. I love the back beat that Hester anchors it all so well with (RIP Paul, we miss you so much). Of course, Neil and Tim...only McCartney and Lennon are equal to your great composing, singing, and playing. Thanks for this spectacular post.
How good does Nick Seymour sound here? I always thought Nick was the thing that made Crowded House sound like Crowded House. Just something in his bass playing that pushes and pulls perfectly with Neil and Paul
Yep, spot on. The bass lines from Nick in almost all the songs are absolutely brilliant. They carry the songs beautifully, and a lot of the time its not conventional either.
Nick's bass is sitting very forward in this mix because of the bass' volume but also its mids-heavy tone. The studio versions of their songs have a more balanced mix. The good part of this imbalance is we get to hear more Nick 😁. Nick is great, but I wouldn't say he was THE thing that made CH sound like CH. As with most trios (not counting their brief stint with Tim), each member is integral to the sound. Not taking anything away from Nick - I love his creative lines and his great feel - just saying that Neil and Paul were just as important, IMO.

For me this is peak Crowded House - three brilliant musicians, Neil, Paul & Nick joined by the amazing Tim Finn. Doesn't get much better than this, with a few Split Enz songs thrown in too.
Thankyou Patrick for posting this concert. This is one of the best CH concerts I have seen. The guys are tight and enjoying their company. Fantastic to seen Tim playing with the band which adds so much to the musical flavor. The music is top notch, the sound quality is excellent and the band is having so much fun. Most enjoyable.....thank you guys for a great concert. RIP Paul.
Love the way Neil is stage right giving Tim center stage. Tim is in no small way the reason everyone that is on stage is there. He's the spirit that begat Enz which begat Crowded House. A perfect circle.
Wow, I remember this it was filmed for some NZ TV show and I only saw it like once. Thank you for posting it here. Superb concert by masters of pop on the high level of The Fab Four.
I saw them before and after Tim left on this tour - with Tim at UMass - Amherst, then without a few months later at Toad's Place in Hartford. The show at Toad's was amazing. The band really clicked. A top 5 or 10 concert. The UMass site wasn't at the same level, though the venue and people in front of us had a negative impact on the show, too.
These Boys are so Talented, In each of their own way,..You wonder how a small number of musos can sound so huge ,The vocal and musical sharing in this group is mind blowing. Hester on the Drums is a show on his own ( RIP ) Neil and Tims Writing reminds of Mc Cartney /Lennon.. And Nic Seymour would have to be one of the most colourful Bassists ive ever heard.... Wow as Kiwis we should be so proud of these Icons of Nz Music who put us on the map around the World.
I've seen them live 5 times and this tour following the Album Woodface is for sure their best show ever even if my favorite Crowded House album (Together Alone) wasn't existing at that moment.
Paul really tried to hang in there …leaving the band he was born to be in,moving back to Melbourne, trying to give himself a stable environment… sometimes bad brain chemistry is just too much for human being . And I still miss him a great deal…
Yeah, he being called along with Mike Campbell was a stroke of genius to give Fleetwood Mac that extra life after Buckingham's exit. Fantastic guitar player and top-shelf vocalist.
Those four albums ( 1st - Together Alone) are just superb. You'd swear that each one was a greatest hits compilation. They just didn't do filler. A great live band.
I'm old enough to have seen them in this tour in Cincinnati, and it's maybe my favorite show I've ever seen. Richard Thompson opened and then played with them on a couple songs. What a great night!
Pat, thanks for uploading. In my opinion this gig/time frame is CH’s PEAK. Love the band in all of its phases, however, this gig tops all. Saw Neil in NYC solo as well...I formed my own first band in 1993 partially because of CH - during its tenure w Neil and Tim together. This performance is pure joy! Does anybody know who plays guitar on Chocolate Cake? - one of the best live versions, for sure. Peace and love, with all of you. Serge PS I own a wide array of guitars - this video prompted me to try a Gibson with mini humbuckers, sounds great here; I know Neil owned it for years, he played it in NYC in 2002 as well. PPS Paul Hester is great on drums here, Nick is rock-solid, Tim is at its best / esp on back vox backing Neil. All complement each other in a very synergetic way. Inspiring.
An absolutely tremendous, outstanding performance and Nick Seymour's bass playing is absolutely on fire! Made all the better by the fact that he's cutting through, so much, in the mix. Top notch performance by all of them, in fact!
One of the best concerts of theirs ever❤️ #yessss. Boy are they on point, enjoying themselves & having a ball #whewwww!!! The singing, harmonizing & everything is awesome! I love this show❤️. It is definitely one of the best ever #fantastic. Everybody is great, in sync & fabulous!!!❤️❤️. Paul is an absolute gem, always has been & always will be #GoPaulHessie❤️ He definitely was z backbone of crowded house #lovehessieforever ❤️
I once had a Guitar player magazine from about the time Woodface was released. Usually Guitarists talk about their Guitars and equipment and playing techniques. Neil’s interview was minimal and in fact all he said was that he uses what he thinks is appropriate for his sound and that goes for his technique too. He is not into sentimentally collecting 100s of Guitars. I found his interview quite humble.
I was binge watching an apocalyptic tv series “The Stand” recently (1994, from a Stephen King novel), and in one scene they find a battery operated record player and play some music - Crowded House.
Brilliant how Neil and Tim Finn turned their forecasted first album as a duo into a Crowded House album, Woodface 🙏 Ultimately the 1995 album "Finn" becoming their first official "Finn Brothers" album ✨
Fell in love with CH during my first time in Sydney in August 1988. I bought Temple Of Low Men on. cassette after seeing an advert on TV. I was not disappointed and immediately bought the debut Album the day after.

Just read headline that Barry Humphries died. Grief. Can't bear to hear of the death of such a great cultural icon. Just immersing myself in CH as a salve.

His bass sound was so good too.
Great concert, and I love the sound quality of this recording. Crowded House will always remain one of my favourite bands. R.I.P. Paul

Systematically good Neil brilliant as usual
What I'd do to go back to 1991... I was fresh out of high school. My first job. Life was good! Pre internet, pre social media...

He was always underrated, but he's really rocking here.

I believe Neil is a much better guitarist than most people realise. Playing in a trio for years does wonders to one’s playing.
