  • French composer Alphonse Hasselmans is likely the most important harpist of the Romantic period, having trained some of the most well-known harp composers of the 20th century, including Henriette Renié, Carlos Salzedo, and Marcel Grandjany. One of his most performed works is his 'Chanson de Mai' (Song of May), a romance without words. The piece is in ternary form, with a coda. The beautiful A section in D-flat major presents a light melody in the French romantic style, while the agitato B section in the relative B-flat minor plays a darker melody. The arpeggios heard throughout the A sections are built up further in the coda, which ends with a beautiful glissando.
